I can see you're focusing far too much on aesthetics rather than the gesture. For a beginner, 1 minute really isn't enough, like a trial by fire. I would suggest not trying to get the precise curvature of the arm muscles and such, but rather focusing on getting the basic structure right. These are from my most recent life drawing session from about 2 weeks ago. Each was about 3 minutes long. I'm not sure you can see, but notice how I sort of compartmentalise the limbs and torso into shapes, rather than following a specific line. The key to gesture drawing is to stop caring about how it looks, because it's not going to be greek-sculpture masterpiece, that's not what it's for. It's for getting down proportions and accurately depicting the motion of the pose.
I'm yet to practice the actual structure of a figure, I'm working towards it. My drawings were more about getting the flow/motion correct rather than structure. It's better explained by the YouTube channel I watch. Proko However, can you actually tell what is going on overall in my drawings? That's the most important thing - the way he says it is trying to communicate the motion with as few lines as possible. Suits me as I suck when it comes to actually putting in detailed features, nevermind tone and shading.. [editline]14th November 2013[/editline] I'll try do something along the lines of what you were doing tomorrow, for now I have to sleep, its 2:30am.
Is there anywhere to post things you're willing to sell? I have a large Wacom Intuos 5 that i'm considering selling since I've switched to IT, and it hasn't been used much at all (aside from my online math class. Holy shit, doing math in Photoshop was so much nicer than on paper for some odd reason...). Anyhow, i searched around but didn't see a thread. Anyone know of someplace around here?
People don't really sell stuff to others in CC that I know of Just use Ebay? If you're selling it at a really good price you could tell us/make a thread and you might get a bite from someone, you never know

Watercolor practice I did a while back.
Decided to draw something on paper after becoming demoralised by the quality of my digital painting skills. 25 mins or so I don't usually draw animals or people so the hand probably looks funky. Just eyeballed it.
I've hit a block alongside total motivation loss. Scrapped 2 digital paintings as I just couldn't seem to get to grips with drawing anything properly with a tablet, nevermind colouring. I even tried tracing and it came out crap. I've got to design a full character for Monday and I keep seeing my coursemates post amazing paintings on facebook and that is only making me feel even more demoralized. Any tips on how I can get past this wall?

hello i made something cool and original, what do you think?
looks like it'd fit pretty well on a shirt!
So I did my first 30 minute session of figure drawing using this. I had it set to one minute - I know my drawings are pretty pathetic but can people give me tips and crit? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34938612/Drawing/Untitled-1.png[/t] [editline]13th November 2013[/editline] I think my lines get harder towards the end as I was getting more frustrated with my lack of skill..
Doing gesture studies before learning anatomy makes no sense. You're gonna be practicing drawing the figure wrong if you don't know how to actually draw it first. Do longer poses at first so you can learn what the figure looks like. I FINALLY FINISHED AND MAILED ALL MY PRINTS. I'm never doing this shit again, printing, matting, cutting boxes, taping, mailing... fuck that shit took way too fucking long. E: I drew this guy really quickly that was playing the violin at grand central while waiting for the subway. I left the drawing in his case, I wonder what his reaction would have been.

Been sitting around drawing no emotion samefaces for a half year before I even got to smiling or anger.
Might as well. Here's some figure drawings and paintings i've been doing in class, all 18x24 (draw big, it's more helpful). This is the first year I've ever really done figure drawings and its already been extremely helpful and fun. I''m also starting going to afternoon outside of school free figure drawing classes to practice portraiture. The regret of having to pay so much money to go to this art school finally went away, I mean it's crazy how much I've already learned and how much more I'm gonna learn and how many connections I've already made so far. Totally worth it if you're dedicated and willing to spend all of your time working on art. I really need to invest in a camera, taking pics with my phone makes me very sad. Machu pichu value study, 30 mins, 1 layer, reference [thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5062494/drawing/machuPichuValue_15-11-13.png[/thumb] Let perspective and details take a back seat since I wanted to focus on getting the values right (reference) Constructive criticism gratefully received.
Whoa, I haven't been here in forever. I miss you guys. I've been crazy busy. I'm in the process of transferring to Savannah College of Art and Design. Here, have some arts. Feel free to crit; I don't get enough of that.

Use the eyedropper tool to see what the actual brightness on the reference is if you're having trouble. For example, the top sky should be 100% bright on the right, and the background mountains about 80%. The shadows on the closer mountains are about 20-30%. You need to draw things relative to each other, not just as individual objects, otherwise the drawing will look flat. Also, in my opinion, the way to go about learning is first learning to draw (sketch, perspective, ratios), then how to shade (form, volume, highlights/ shadows), then getting the values right (realism, relative values, overall atmosphere), then rendering properly (style, texture).

I think what you said about trying to do the whole thing rather than individual parts will probably help with that. I don't have a problem with perspective and ratios on paper but I find I am incapable of drawing stuff at the correct angle on a tablet (feels disconnected) so I am ignoring it for the time being (didn't sketch first or even try and observe relative size or angle) and trying to get the value stuff right, which should improve my ability to actually control the thing as I go. I'm just going to keep doing loads of these while still doing the occasional paper sketch and hopefully I'll work out these contrast issues and work out my coordination issues with using a tablet.

Oy Don't be downsizing yourself! I can't work in binary worth shit. Besides, I follow all the facepunch people that'll let me. You guys are rad.

Painted a fjord from photo reference from google images, this time in colour. Been getting bored of greyscale so thought I'd give it a go to see how it went. IMO I got better values when working in colour, I found it much easier (didn't use picker on reference). [thumb]http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/320/1/f/fjord_16_11_13_by_jallenthenovice-d6ugjsb.png[/thumb] And desaturated to observe values - [thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5062494/junk/fjord_greyscale.png[/thumb]

The whole detail density thing has to be my biggest problem right now, I need to get that sorted.
