Bat Cat
Cellusios you really need to branch out of pixel art, I'm not saying your stuff is bad but you need to move onto something with a bit more substance.
what do you think its better for posters?

Not sure, as there is a photoshop subforum but I don't know if it's specifically for contests or general photoshopping as well.
i haven't seen anyone post any actual manipulations in there, it's all contests
so i just figured i'd post it here, since it's not worth its own thread
Made a bit more progress

Also can anyone suggest how i can paint some wear and tear on the armor?
Having some trouble with that.

I disagree. I'd like to see more experimentation from Cell, maybe using different sized squares in a landscape painting to show depth, etc, but I think he should keep pushing pixel art
I drew a Sonic.
Also can anyone suggest how i can paint some wear and tear on the armor?
Having some trouble with that.
scratches, bullet impacts, scorch marks from energy weapons, maybe claw marks if the thing has fought against tyranids, and most importantly grey spots of unpainted metal, to give it that whole "paint-getting-chipped-away-as-armor-takes-damage" feel. also maybe some rust, but i dunno about 40k metals and it might be some 41st millenium version of stainless steel
i'm no artist nor do i actually know shit about materials and such but i put together an example of all kinds of damage

be sure that all the major marks of damage have some backstory to them. smaller scorch marks from traitor guardsmen's lasguns or glancing hits from tau pulse weapons, deeper craters from explosive rounds and bolts, large areas of blackened metal and peeled off paint from heat damage, torn and twisted metal from tyranid claws, coating damage on fingers/hands and face for punching and getting punched, mud and dirt from explosives etc. here for example i put that huge wound in the marine's helmet because i thought that maybe a piece of shrapnel coming from an explosion infront of the guy ricocheted off his head. the most important thing IMO, along with all the smaller scratches, is the paint damage on the faceplate, hands, collar armor and the lower edge of the torso armor; that sort of stuff is pretty important for creating the illusion of painted metal plating
also remember that the metal underneath should have stronger highlights than the rest of the stuff, because it obviously shines more
Personally I don't think you've made the scratches nearly reflective enough, and the stuff on the shoulder looks extremely draft-like.
Edit: Incredible rendering overall, of course.
and that's because it's a quick mockup made with a mouse, it's not like i'm going to start adding details and finishing the painting for him

it was just a mock-up for a critique? haha
man do i want a proper tablet
friends keep telling me i should quit GMod art and get into this real shit

Does this fit here, It's the output of a small java program I wrote.

I actually think there are a couple of things you could do with this. The trunk is shaded as if thought it were divided into sections, like a fence, which makes it lose a lot of depth, and you're using way too many highlight colors on the top of the tree. It's still really nice, though.

There are real tree trunks that are sectioned like that, and I believe it adds depth. As well I believe the highlights at the top of the tree look spectacular. Maybe it could be dialed back a little if it were too distracting in-game but as is I would marry that tree.

I kind of agree. How should I go about fixing that?
I kind of agree. How should I go about fixing that?
What I did was just go crazy with saturated colours and really push the vividness of the colours. Experiment; don't be too concerned about failing.

So I'm a bit out of tune with pixel art right now but I'll try to help you out.
First of all, when working with pixel art start out with a 2px brush and sketch out the piece using no more than 1 color per element (trunk, leaves), than go pick your darkest shadow and sketch that in quickly, than start working up to your highlights and move to 1px brushes to add detail and fine tune at the end. Don't use too many colors (it helps if you limit the amount of colors you can use for the entire piece). Using too many shades will make your piece look noisy and cluttered. You want to build texture using shapes not excess pixels. This depends on your game, but don't keep your colors too saturated and make sure to follow proper shadows and highlights hue and saturation changes. Don't put a black outline around your entire piece either.
I did a quick edit of your tree and then redid it how I usually do trees. First of all there's a lot of extra pixels that don't really add anything to the piece, so they can be merged with surrounding shades. Second, the shape of your tree is very cartoonish and lacks a lot of depth and form. Trees aren't perfect sphere, so they should be shaded accordingly. Adding random shadows will create clusters of leaves which will break up the monotone shape. Obviously my tree isn't exactly done but you get the idea. Again the shape of the tree is hardly a focus here, but proper lighting will create better shapes and give depth to your tree. I only used 9 colors. You used 19, so you could bring it down to 10-15 easily if you want to edit your own. Hope this helps.
