Okay got a bit over an hour's more work into this

i think its about done, i'll touch it up tomorrow evening
i think that shadow could use a bit of variation. it would be darker by the feet but under the wings it would be lighter
Still murky but it's making progress. I don't know if it was already recommended but just try to do some subjects that are aggressively colorful like tropical wildlife or flowers and whatnot. Besides the muddyness (once again getting better) it's is a reaaally awesome concept.
Been listening to the Boston scanner all night.
Occupied myself:

I think I'll sleep now.
I'm not sure what it is but I like it.
You've made the mistake of assuming that I can just intentionally do things the right way or make something look nice. I'm a blatant amatuer and I haven't worked my way up it- I know what I'm supposed to do but that doesn't mean I can do it. But I appreciate the feedback!
What he meant is that you should use larger brush sizes to set the shape, so the shades are a bit more evenly blended. You don't need any skill to up the brus hsize in ps.
Doodled some people and suddenly everyone was a methhead

Also some mushrooms for an assignment from a while ago, I enjoyed this one though the cropping is off.

Knowing this thread, I'm probably going to get butchered :v:
This was for my Steam avatar, something I don't usually draw.

Sort of odd the detail level and pretty nice shading on everything else, but then the face is just flat and somewhat badly drawn on. Sort of like one person did half then someone completely different did the face on after.

I'm going to massively disagree with you here. I started with large brushes but wasn't able to confine my shapes and blend without mucking everything up so I had to gradually resort to smaller and smaller brushes. Obviously it doesn't take skill to use large brushes, but it takes skill to make them actually work well, and I'm working on it.
Just to be clear you're right that you should use large brushes, I want to but I'm not up to that level yet and I'm working towards it.
<3 FP art community though, thanks for daily inspiration everyone

That was my first manga style drawing, but that just sounds like an excuse.
I did try to completely shade the face like my other drawings, but then it turned out like turd and inconsistent, also looked off for the style, so, I had to erase and re-draw ~65% of the facial details.

Oh man that hair is amazing though. rikimaru, have you tried any realistic faces and posted them here?

The Gordon one is pretty horrible, that was when I had only a slight grip on facial proportions.

Ah, I get what you're saying now, a nice exercise is making a black to white gradient with large, hard brushes. Start with a stripe of black on a white sheet and then use pen pressure to make a middle tone, select this middle tone and use that with your hard, large brush to smoothen the gradient, keep selecting more subtle mid tones and keep your pen pressure light so you don't mess up the progress you've made. This should result in a very nice gradient, now all you need to do is apply that technique on the shapes you want to render. It could be helpful to make a mask so you don't paint outside of the shape or to use less than 100% opacity for your brush. It's all a matter of preference really. But for that you should ask advice from people who can actually paint well.

Update.
Reminds me of Cave Story. I don't think the color of the grass works too well, did you try something more unsaturated, at least for some sections? Or a bit darker? Also I see some tiling issues with the darkest dirt (big black circle in the middle) and the lighter one (black straight line across near the top). Nice to see more pixel artists around here. Can't wait to be done with my AP thesis and start working on a pixel art game too.
So much talent in this thread, I wish I could draw as good as you guys.
I guess nothing is stopping me, lots of hard work is the key here.
All I ever do is poopy wire sculptures

Don't be worried to define some details in anime, if ya need help with it I can definitely help. Anime type drawing was where I started and I've learned a lot about it so far. It mostly just needs more form shading on the face, since everything else is so nicely rendered. Or less shading on the rest to match the face. But even then the face needs a bit of work, the eyes dont match shape wise, and it would be really helped if you defined the lower lip with either a below shadow or just a short line.
Personally I don't like that eye style (although it's semi common) it basically never looks good, styles where you define more down the outer edge of the eye as well tend to look a lot better :)
Hey gents, quick question.
I think part of the reason my sense of colour is so weak is because I do all of my drawing and sketching exclusively in ballpoint. I want to incorporate some colour into my everyday drawing, so I can do quick observational stuff, that I think would be beneficial.
What medium is best for putting colour in my everyday sketchbook ? Preferably something that won't smudge or distort when I close the book on it.
I looked all morning but I cant find these pens which is a worry in its self...fek. Ill try again later, sorry about that :L
Architecture Drawing is probably the most retarded shit Ive done.
So here I was, happy that we get to go out once a week to draw buildings around the city. Got some A3 sized paper and some pens and pencils. So we start drawing this building, and I sketch it about 50-60% of the paper. Some tutor then comes over and says "Oh no, you shouldnt do it that big, go about this small because were just starting. And no perspetive, just the front view.", and he starts drawing an example of something as small as 10cm across. Then Im doing my lines that I usually do, straight and all, another guy comes over and says "oh you should rest your wrist on the paper and do it really slowly, make sure you dont do it straight but rather start shaking your hand so it comes out in waves". Im like, fine whatever and I start jerking my arm muscles like crazy and not looking at the paper so that I can get a wavy kind of line. This stuff is just crazy
That seems more like your tutor has arthritis, I don't mean to question what you said but did they seriously tell you to do that shit? This is really annoying to me because it seems to have given you a bad impression of something that can be really awesome to learn to do.

Despite exaggerated facial features (which resulted from anti west war propaganda in the 40's) The Eastern style still conforms to human anatomy so learn about doing it properly before you start having fun with it. Also if you're interested in seeing some seriously pro shit then check out Kiechi Sonoda's "Gallant" and "Garden Party" books as well as Illustrations by Satoshi Urushihara (just make sure no one is in the room with you when you do).
just my 2¢

I would love to hear the story of this.
Also to add to my previous post, remember than anime isn't one set style and there are a TON of sub-styles. In particular if you look at shojo (for teen girls) vs Shounen (for teen boys) manga you will notice proportions and details are used quite differently. And then again looking at Kodomo (for kids) which can even look a lot like western cartoons, (google result images for kodomo are terrible...) and Sheinin and Josei which are meant for adults (In a non porn way). The styles can go from super deformed chibi to very realistic comic styles.
But yeah after begining with real human proportion I suggest picking a few styles you like and studying in which ways they alter that to suit the specific genre they want :)

Haha, I never really wanted to go THAT deep into anime/manga. My main aim now is to master fineart (which will probably take ~10 years) as well as my landscapes drawings.
Despite that, I really appreciate your suggestions and how you even put effort into them. I love you guys <3
Would you play a game that involved controlling one of these bad boys

its a possibility
or make a thread highlighting your objectives and details of what you need
or just explain here

I
well
I don't know what I need.
I'm like
I'm trying to come out to my friends as a transgender and the way I want to do it is with a small, quick game that features a person with some terrible secret and the how that affects him.
I want the art style itself to look like it's some from old Atari game.
(I'm really kind of early with this, I've only spent the last few days thinking about this)
You really want to make the revelation as surreal as possible huh :v:

Holy crap man
That's genuinely the most sincere reason to create a piece of art I have ever heard.
I'm sure you'll find somebody here to help you out. Lilyo recently revealed that he knows his stuff when it comes to pixel art, and Cellulosis (spelling?) is amazing at it too
