I found a very helpful lecture on learning any skill, not just art. I figured you guys might appreciate it.
Time to go learn every instrument known to man.
I've been messing around with using my head just to compare the quality between what I practiced and what I didn't. This is the third orange I did in my life and the three other fruit were done without any reference.
and it really shows, because of just how disproportional they are with each other. the banana should at least be twice as long as the orange is.

I dance, for like two months, and apparently make a really cheeky smile. I could probably have made more mainstream music choice but I liked this one.
- Use the hard circle brush - soft edged brushes look like shit and do nothing but mask incorrect drawing - Turn off pressure opacity - some may disagree, but it's an additional dimension you don't need to deal with right now and it doesn't behave like actual paint. Just have pressure size (learned this from FZD school vids, very helpful tip for me) - Perspective is IMO the most important thing for you to look at right now
Decided to try to make 2d isometric game. (Target - only playable demo with 1 small location for now). Was inspired by Team Fortress 2 visual style. And it is of course wip.

actually not sure if i should have posted this here.
paint tool sai and paint.NET tbh photoshop is probably the best though
IIRC, Paint.NET doesn't include pressure-sensitivity for tablets.
example maybe nasty jpeg compression but hopefully it gets the point across when i was looking at the levels for your painting, especially for the scene on the left, there's like pretty much no values past 50% grey which is pretty crazy. it makes it look like the scene is indoors or that it's a really overcast day, which doesn't make any sense when you look at the really long cast shadow (which is vry nice btw) [editline]16th December 2013[/editline] probably need to push the darks back in a bit on my version though

By the way I try to work with more monochromic colours while painting and then to make them brighter, because with initially bright colours I can make mistakes and the whole picture will looks too acid. I think that problem with indoors lightining is easy solving- is just to make shadow edges much softer and it will looks like reflected light from outside.
I need help with these skulls [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/uqWB5Tx.png[/thumb]
Please help me fix this terribly botched plate [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/3JdDIa5.png[/thumb] Edit [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/WBXGrGU.png[/thumb] A bit better, still bad though
You have potential in rendering (I like the texture of the oranges skin), but leave it aside for now and practice using pen and paper - practice the shape of objects, perspective, form, all of those basics. That orange would roll of that plate because the plate isn't level and the orange itself is malformed.

If we assume that the sky is blue in this location then you'd have a lot more blue light altering the colours of those areas in shadow
This problem with the "indoor-like" lighting can be easily solved with more contrast colours (may be magenta-bright yellow combination will fit since it's a desert, and since they are widely used in TF2 visual style). And another problem is that materials on both original and chesty's edit are kinda..uneven. I mean, both metal and wood look like they are made of some coloured plasic. Metal is all about contrasts, while wood is usually "smooth". I don't really know if you wanted to make it as bright as my version is, but maybe this will show what I mean:
progress! (I hope!) [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7346219/Arts/scraps/supersecretartproject3.jpg[/t] and a closeup of the bit I've detailed so far [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7346219/Arts/scraps/supersecretartproject3detgail.jpg[/t] a little worried about finishing this; I've only got until thursday to make sure I can get it printed for christmas, alongside my job
Could someone link again to that figure drawing website that lets you choose a specific length of time and then gives you various images to draw from?
www.posemaniacs.com
Not it, but it also looks very useful, thanks!

I hate that site. All the poses are too artsy. You're better off using google or deviantart to look for nude models.
I hate that site. All the poses are too artsy. You're better off using google or deviantart to look for nude models.
Thanks so much for finding the link, guys! I do agree, some of the poses are pretty fucking stupid to be honest, but I think drawing weird garbo poses is still helpful anyway. The site itself is useful enough with the timing and drawing periods and such that I think it makes up for how pretentious it can be at times.
If anyone is looking for a large collection of custom brushes to use check out this file of Jaime Jones' brushes. There's foliage, chalk, paintbrush. It's somewhat useless knowing that you can use any brush for whatever you want, but there's a handful of useful ones. The chain one is very interesting. http://www.mediafire.com/download/hj1yl0143d4lwcs/Jaime%27s+brushes.rar [editline]ugh[/editline] I would recommend sticking to one brush while learning to paint. Custom brushes can be bad.
Get a pencil brush, a square brush, a watercolor brush, a paint brush, a regular round brush. That's all you need honestly.
i use like 2 brushes at most for every painting unless i'm doing some sort of stylised work, usually texture stuff
I use one chalk brush. Maybe a few for filling out and blobbing shapes. Though it's always fun to experiment with new brushes
