think this might be finished? fairly happy with it but I feel like the composition isn't great, but there's nothing I can do to fix that short of a complete revision
any thoughts/suggestions for fixes I can do, bearing in mind I only have one more day before I have to get it printed?

it's looks pretty flat. both of them. sorry if this is shitty criticism but honestly that's the first thing i see. you try to solve that with the moon thing but honestly it all just looks PLASTERED THERE and i don't really get the illusion of depth from that.
the trees have a really weird depth going on. the trees on the back are bigger than the trees on the front.

the mountains look like cardboard cut outs, the clouds follow no perspective... it's weird. i'm not in my best state of mind to give you criticism right now but i'll try to fix this post later.
why is everything a dark gray it really bothers me

fix these things and its good but it feels like the moon is the main point of the composition which sucks.
I know this is the sorta poor excuse people always get flogged in here for but I think the grey is to some extent a preference thing; I like grey, moody, pastel aesthetic stuff. I'll play around with the levels and possibly revise the sky tomorrow :)

I think the glaring issue here is that it's two pieces in one. That small area at the bottom of the frame has its own comp and set of focal points and everything - where do you want the viewer to look first?
You basically cannot look at the piece as a whole, you can either see the landscape or you're zoomed in to look at what's going on on the lake. It makes for a pretty cluttered overall composition, as well as being way too tight on the boat and the mermaid imo. Another thing you want to avoid is making landscapes feel claustrophobic; having a landscape in tall portrait format with major elements in the corners is a surefire way to make that happen
[editline]18th December 2013[/editline]
And yeah as Menter pointed out, there's no hope of seeing any foreground details (such as the cat) when looking at the whole piece. There are no silhouettes really to pick up on, you can barely read what going on at all unless you study it closely. If I look at the boat without zooming in I have nooo idea what's happening there
mako, i was editting my post right now making it look all nifty and you just go and post a better piece of criticism. i hate you.

Metalsmithing project. Three weeks. Working bosun whistle.
BTW I've been gone from this site for quite a while. IMG codes don't seem to work anymore...anyone mind filling me in?
Steampunk is grand and the overall design of that is neat and interesting. I've done a little small-scale jewellery metalworking so I know how frustrating it can be. Congrats!
Putting gears and cogs on something without any realistic pretense of function doesn't sit well with me though. The whole basis of Steampunk design is, for me at least, driven by beautifying function. I feel that any purely decorative imagery should be based in nature, as it was in the Art Nouveau style from which Steampunk seems to be derived
Putting gears and cogs on something without any realistic pretense of function doesn't sit well with me though.
Thank you for such genuine feedback! I would've loved to put functioning gears in this (and with some rivets, I could have done it). But I was severely limited with the amount of time I had to make this. On top of that, this was for one of four pretty intensive studios, all of which had projects due at the time. Forming the sphere's two hemispheres and soldering them together was a right pain in the ass, and sweat soldering those gears was no walk in the park either. But, this baby won me best in show so far at my college's annual art show, so it was definitely worth it.
Is this a joke or
I assumed it was lyrics or something?
I hate that site. All the poses are too artsy. You're better off using google or deviantart to look for nude models.
For the purpose of learning how to quickly compose and establish the dynamics of the pose the more artsy stuff is actually really helpful. I'd actually say it's a shame there are no 10 and 20 second poses available. It keeps you sharp on checking that everything is properly related and proportioned and it makes you quicker and more confident in the long run. These types of sites aren't good if you want to use the poses as reference for your own pieces but they are wonderful if you want to stay confident in the stuff that needs to carry your drawing. After all, you can render a piece of shit beautifully, but it'll still be a piece of shit. If you get the proportions and composition down from the get-go then the rendering is only there to make it prettier, not there to hide your mistakes.
If it matters at all, I'm saying this with the experience of a 5 month art course filled to the brim with daily nude sketches/studies.
Doing quick gesture studies before having done extensively long and more serious studies doesn't make much sense. You need to learn to draw the figure properly before being able to do quick gesture studies. Next semester I'm gonna be doing figure and portrait paintings in painting class, figure drawings and master studies in drawing class, sculpture (hopefully figures), and my new teacher is letting me attend his anatomy classes as well and I might attend another more serious figure draw class. Even with all that I doubt I'll be confident enough to do quick gesture studies. I just don't really see a point in it yet. I'm not a comic artist, I'm not an animator, why would I need to quickly be able to capture a gesture that way? I personally think there are two different types of gesture studies, static and kinetic ones. Static is more on the verge of elaborate posing, and kinetic deals more with movement and capturing an instance while portraying a realistic and lifelike emotion. Doing long and serious studies will help you learn how to pose the body in any position you want basically, and doing quick studies will help you portray the motion more lifelike. You can't portray the character in motion in a realistic way without first having done the long poses of actually learning to portray the character itself realistically.

I quite liked the idea of it being a landscape when viewed from afar but with a sort of narrative going on when you look closer so it was kinda intentional, but yeah, poor execution on my part! I think I might just crop it such that there's just the mermaid and yeti then do some fixes on those, cause I think the whole thing is beyond redemption. Annoyingly I'd already ordered a frame for the whole thing (£60, ew) but I'd rather use the frame for something else and not give a shitty present to someone :D
Thanks for the help dudes!
