Just draw. Don't watch any bloody tutorials. Grab a few bottles/jugs and start drawing them. Draw. Draw. For one, it'll train your hand at drawing, you'll start feeling more confident with the pencil. Carry a sketchbook everywhere, draw, draw, draw. God damn it you can't get better by watching others draw (to a certain extent). You can know all the proportions, techniques perfectly, but it all means nothing if the hand-mind link doesn't exist.
I'm still building that basic fundamental "skill", we'll see where it gets me in a year.
When it comes to animootin' I'm not terrible

But when it comes to drawin' I'm bad. I really should get some sort of sketchbook where I can just fill in a page every day.

hmmmm. THAT sort of sketchbook? not sure if those even exist.

How do you guys do the long curves?
Lots and lots of practice?

You're not doing a still life you're drawing from a photograph. Trust me photographs will slow down your studies ten fold. It's gonna be really hard at first but try to do drawings from objects that are actually in front of you. Even with lineart you've got to understand how an object lives in space.
As far as the actual linework I find it easier to do with pen and paper and then transfer it to the computer after. Otherwise it's not looking bad!

Simplify some lines to straight ones, I don't think that cup is really that bendy. If you look at the video you linked he used more straight lines to place stuff on paper then refines some of them where needed.
This past month or so I've really been focusing on realism since generally I've done graphic illustrations. I decided to work my ass off because now I really want to become a concept artist or animator.

Here's a snippet of some post of mine from a while back (hurray for labpunch):
(...) and secondly try keeping your eye on the point to which your line is supposed to go, rather than focusing on the tip of your pen or whatever as you draw the line. You can often work more accurately if you make your strokes in the central area of your field of vision but without actually tracking the line with your eyes, as you can see more at once and have a fixed viewpoint. It allows for faster, more flowing linework for things like figures too, which is great if you find yourself petting lines because they're just too long to achieve in one stroke.
Yay! My first physical painting ever! This is hella fun, why didn't I start before.

I did use reference, this one here by PE-Travers. I know the composition isn't quite there or the colours but I had fun. Next time something original. Took 2 hours.
Also my awesome paintingstation.

I actually like yours a lot more
Not meaning to dredge up the big discussion again but I hardly ever visit this thread anymore and just wanted to offer some advice. When I draw, i find it a good idea to find as many pictures as you can from as many of your favourite artists and just looking at how they draw stuff and trying to see how you can apply or replicate that method in your own drawings. I'm not saying copy it directly but it's just as beneficial studying how other people draw as it is to wander round drawing things from sight.
Decided to see what I could do in 30 minutes. I want to be able to do rough paintings where I don't need to spend ages putting in detail to make them look right.
I'm not going to make a habit of spending such a short time on paintings but I'm going to keep it mostly rough for now. I want to be able to produce something simple that looks correct and good.

Reference - http://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/1sk6ap/totally_worth_the_freezing_cold_windy_and/ (I changed the angle and positioning of some things so I didn't just go into photocopier mode)
Any advice would be great.

You are missing a lot of texture, also the proportions are quite a bit off.
It's a good start but it doesn't really capture the feel.

Oh, thanks! :)
I haven't made a new character in awhile, so I pooped this out based on a idea I had for awhile now.

How do I add color to B&W drawings without it looking completely arbitrary?

Sorry to say, but it looks like someone took a pretty decent painting and added this horrible guy on the foreground.
Seriously, it could be million times better without him!

If you get your values sorted right, just create a new layer with a proper blending mode (colorize I think? idk I got PS non-english), and paint over it.
