I don't know what that thing is but I wanted to draw it, if that's ok.

Also I redid that one character I posted here long ago that looking back I wasn't entirely happy with. But now I am.

Looks like an enemy from Wind Waker.
Anyone used these before http://www.amazon.com/Sennelier-French-School-Watercolor-Gouache/dp/B001DNAK2G
Or gouache in general? I got these for christmas and idk if I should keep them or give them to someone else. I want to start using gouache for illustrations, but idk if I could invest in a good set or use this.. I usually try to stay away from using sets that have multiple forms of certain colors in them and instead mix my own with a smaller set.

As finished as it'll ever be I suppose.
Why are the dark parts so bright? I mean I'm not gonna be all dgg and s-curve your work to hell but you're missing like a third of the range here

here's what a histogram of your painting looks like
i tried moving the black level closer to your darkest grey

In what world is that not DGG'ing it up? You removed all detail in the hair completely.
I'd say it should just be pumped a bit to the point where it's not destructive but still brings some more punch to the table.

By the way, Tovip, you wanted to colour it with blending modes right?
9/10 times "multiply" is the mode you want to work with, it does darken the artwork, requiring some brightening afterwards, but the colours behave most like you'd expect them to.
As you can see here
multiply
[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3655193/dggitupMultiply.jpg[/t]
Using anything else will be for very limited and usually "artistic" reasons, most of which usually have the reasoning of "this looks cool" instead of "this looks good".
The two most usable other modes, that still does not really work very well, is Overlay and Color, anything else will mostly just be useless.
Overlay

Color

well for one all i did was spread the range out by moving the black level close to the darkest color of the painting, I didn't add any additional contrast
and secondly I didn't say that's how it should look, it's just an example to demonstrate how light the darks are
I have a total discipline block for doing work that isn't for college, I'm just screwing around with doodles again

should have drawn the structures of the body first but aaaaaaarghblb

You said you wouldn't s-curve it to hell, doing a dgg, then you did.
What does you adjusting contrasts or not have anything to do with it? Every "DGG IT UP" result from me has simply been adjusting the levels just like you did.
In most cases all I have done is demonstrations as well, welcome to my world, you're not getting out of this one.

who cares, the statement "dgg it up" itself doesn't warrant any attention whatsoever let alone someone specifically pointing out they're trying to avert it.

Those are almost the same exact colors I've been coloring it, how'd you do that?
multiply has been really odd looking though it dosn't give me the exact color I'm trying to put down.
Using multiply to shade is never a good idea, it just shades with gray which makes things look dull
-snip-
Best way to color is to put the shaded layer above and color under it. Use the option luminosity on the b/w shaded layer, this will put the brightness of the colored layer under it at the same one as the b/w layer. Then make another layer over the b/w one and refine your image and colors on that one.
The best off brand tablet you can buy is the Huion H610 Pro. $70 and it has the same exact specs as the $350 Wacom Intuos Pro

monoprice is also a good brand to buy.
doing quick speed paintings to get a better sense of composition and colouring early on.
the composition and depth in this is just laughably bad and not worth the time ive spent on it at all

I like the first one but the bridge makes it extremely underwhelming. Mind if I work with it to try something?

"Zol naldur"
I wonder wherever you could have derived that name from :v:

That is identical to just putting the above layer on "color".

You won't ever get the exact colour because it will be altered by the brightness/value of the grey it's being applied to. The only way you can get the exact colour is by painting normally. You're basically painting with hue and saturation, the value is set by your greyscale painting (minus the darkening from multiply).
Also how did we come to the same colour scheme? easy peasy. It's clearly scifi so the planet needs to have an unrealistic old-cheesy sci-fi seagreen flare to it, the ground is obviously made of dirt, the person wearing the suit is a girl so hello pink stereotype, and the bike was painted a deep blue to have a different colour present to show how colours are effected by the blending modes. Basically, "how can I show all the colours of the rainbow?".
build and turn forms instead of just copying what u see
This post is a bit old, but can you explain simply what that means? I'm sure I've had it explained to me but I've never really learned how to learn from or do actual studies.

It was just the first thing I saw when I looked at it, idk something l ike this might look cool. Could give it a better composition definitely, I really hated that bridge from before. Maybe some magical powerful monument thing in the center where the light hits the city. Either way, size is always an easy way to convey a sense of grander.
