now thats just awesome.
i guess my mind was just stuck because it really didnt occur to me how i could fix it like you did.
Idk if you know all these artists, but you should look them up, it might help you with setting better compositions and environments.

I just suggest you think "zoom out" and concentrate less on blending and more on sketching like I did. Rendering is easy to do at the end, but you need to practice creating better settings first. All your pieces have a really smooth gradient shading as well, it's very bland and boring imo, try sticking with environments for a while.
Did some late night sketching.

yeah
When i was 13, I hadn't necessarily used photoshop. I used a download of Jasc paint proshop from my friend and learned to "photoshop" from that program for years.
i hadn't used photoshop or jasc for almost 4 years now and now that i have a laptop, i downloaded cs6 and I'm trying to get the hang of things again.
Its a bit different then what I'm used to because of the different actions and stuff.
I edited a photo of myself w/paint and textures.

I just spent the last 20 minutes going through each of those users submissions, adding tons of stuff to my favourites. That's what happens when I find a cool piece of art on deviantart, I get sucked into a cycle of going through peoples galleries and adding cool stuff to my favourites.
i did that redraw a drawing thing

i won't say you understand how hair works because you don't but it's a nice style for what it is
The water from the original is better and would still suit the new style.

Hm. I recommend you get a bigger brush to blend your shades together, because the individual brush strokes are really standing out.
i redid the water and tweaked the hair

the composition and depth in this is just laughably bad and not worth the time ive spent on it at all

[editline]30th December 2013[/editline]
It was just the first thing I saw when I looked at it, idk something l ike this might look cool. Could give it a better composition definitely, I really hated that bridge from before. Maybe some magical powerful monument thing in the center where the light hits the city. Either way, size is always an easy way to convey a sense of grander.
I think I prefer the original in that the bridge creates an immediate link between foreground and midground and actively invites the viewer to involve themselves with the environment. Your version Feels much more distant and removed from the viewer. Combined with the now mostly side-facing bridges, yours also feels much more spatially flat.
Both are dang nice though
Yeah but it ends neatly at the bottom of the frame and it just creates a very anti dynamic scene as well as make the city feel a lot smaller than it is, even awkward. I cant tell if the big towers are supposed to be far off in the background away from the gate or if the bridge is a lot bigger than I think it is. It just ruins the entire atmosphere form the top half, it doesn't work at all.
It's done well in this piece for example because the composition is better laid out and the bridge itself has a much better dynamic motion. If you want to add a dynamic foreground to your environment than it needs to actually create some sort of motion for the piece. You need to be able to look at it and just have it be like bam in your face where you can almost hear the atmosphere noises and music playing in the background and things like the flags and ropes moving in the wind. Thats sort of the point of a foreground.

For example you could crop my version to the left and add maybe another mountain taking up the left side of the image to have a foreground, maybe some birds off to the right side of the towers. Obviously better drawn mountains for the cliff/ floating islands whatever they are will give it more depth. That stuff is easy to add in. Environment concept art just always needs to be able to have you look at it and be able to visually comprehend and place yourself through the eyes of the canvas. When you look at something you don't see it as an individual entity, you see it as an object within an environment, so when you draw a castle or city for example, you wouldn't really want to just focus on that entity, but rather placing it in a bigger space around it. It gives it more life.
Lilyo ninja'd me but my point stands, more or less.
Maybe it's just the placebo effect, but holy shit, Maloof is definitely onto something. Looking back the original feels much more immediate and the artsy-fartsy half of my brain is torn between wanting to step forward and wanting to turn and run.
Looking at Lilyos on the other hand, it feels like it's an eternity away, and maybe I'll end up there after a solving a bunch of puzzles and maybe fighting some ghosts or something to that tune. This isn't a criticism obviously, but it does set a very different tone.
Still Maloof was also right that they're both excellent pieces. Lilyo's reinterpretation is excellent, as is the original.
Edit:
Taking Lilyos comment into consideration, I think the aspect ratio gives his example a bit of an unfair advantage, and honestly the bridge there isn't leading my eye anywhere because the village is flat and boring in comparison, so back to the bridge and background elements we go. On the other hand the original bridge in Xephios could do with a touch of key light somewhere so that it's a touch more prominent.
And of course as always I have no idea what I'm talking about, just spouting out ideas.
I agree with Lilyo, the bridge could be more resolved in Xephio's original, but I think improving it would be a better call than removing it
Good points Bisbuit-Boy
[editline]30th December 2013[/editline]
wait ur just a dog how do you know these things???
i think mine is poop because of the bridge and Lilyo's version makes it BETTER but the more i look at both pictures the worse they look. the problem is mostly in the big towers, theyre just badly placed and screw up the depth in both pictures.
but Lilyos version still looks better composition wise no doubt
Alright, now shit is coming together

Thinking of getting a new tablet, old one has been in a pretty much unuseable condition for a while now.
Do you guys have any recommendations? Preferably something in the below 200€ price range.

Have a browse, mono price are good and I can recommend their own tablets
Or get the Huion if you want something better. Monoprice is currently subpar to Huion tablets as the Huion tablet itself is just an improved Monoprice tablet basically, look at the specs. Also no battery in the stylus. http://www.amazon.com/Huion-H610-Pro-Graphics-Drawing/dp/B00GIGGS6A
