no thigh gap 3/10
no thigh gap 3/10
i tried
I tried to make a mildly cheesy, slightly-worn VHS-looking advert for a car on BeamNG. The VHS effects consist of a free template video for the lines themselves, with me adding the blurry VCR text and the distortion effects. I feel like it's the most effort I've put into something so short so I'm looking for criticism for any future things.

Hi, I did pixel art and it's my first time. I started with outlines in white on a black background with 16x16, and when I had it finished I detailed it in at 32x32. For this one, I was practicing making people, and I wanted to do the second one like walking but I couldn't really figger out how. :c and then this is my last one that I did which is [del]bad[/del] generic and stuff edit: Can anyone offer me advice on making people from a side perspective?
Your colours are reaaally primary and saturated and ugly I don't do pixel art but I believe use of harmonious colours and a limited palette are very important

Anyways, don't add in random hues and values of a colour all over the place to try and make details. You should also not choose the brightest and clearest colours that completely contrasts eachother either. There is no substance to any of your works there, details are random cluttered and meaningless, the colours are too symbolic "clear green because grass" "clear blue because sky/water" "brown because dirt/rock" "grey because I can see it when it's next to all these strong vivid colours" and you're not really showing anything. "Mountain" "person" "person looking out from a mountain", there is no story telling, there is no landscape or theme, no character design, no nothing. It's just a person that looks like a person in dull clothes that tells nothing about him and scenery that is just botches of one colour that can represent what it is. You shouldn't look at Amiga or Atari games for inspiration for what pixel art is. Look at actual pixel art instead. That concept art in your post is all very impressive, but it doesn't invalidate low-res, small palette pixel art. Not saying your points aren't valid, but I don't think all pixel art should aim to look like the pieces you linked.
Sweet progress!!!I've finally managed to make a realistic face and shade it [t]http://i.imgur.com/uNw74Lr.jpg[/t] and to think I've made this two months ago
keep at it and you'll get even further. in two years time the difference will be astonishing (and you'll look back at this and cringe)

My point is that right now he's only drawing pixely things that looks like other pixely things that you can find in indie games like Mcpixel that "homage" the old school games by drawing with pixels but not actually drawing. His person looks exactly like any other pixel art person that is drawn in such a low resolution. Tell 50 other people to draw a person within a 32x32 frame, pixel by pixel and most of them will end up just like that just with an altered colour palette. If he wants to do pixel art I suggest he actually looks into the "art" part of it, check out tutorials on what pixel art actually is, what guidelines exists for it, as pixel art is an artform and requires the ability to draw just as much as any other visual artform. Right now his attempts are just very very symbolic and simplistic and it seems like he draws things in certain ways because he's seen something similar been done withing the artstyle so he should do it as well. On the note of tutorials for pixel art: http://www.pixelprospector.com/the-big-list-of-pixel-art-tutorials/

The learning process for me is always miserable. One thing is that although you have a full set of values over on the left there, you haven't used them on the face. You'll notice that as you get better, it'll get continually easier to utilize high contrast when working with faces, until eventually you're fine laying on heavy blacks and bright highlights. Keep at it!

Also, I'm interested in low-res stuff. Not stuff that you linked. edit: I'm more interested in things like this: And this:

The fat guy with pixel thin arms is unique. (the background art is very bland in that screen though) The noseless guy with a huge grin and afro has some character to him. Although honestly they look like those retro "homage" indie games I was talking about. Games made by programmers or untalented artists that have to result to the pixel artstyle in order to even be able to make artwork for their game and then cover it up and try to excuse it as oldschool, even though it looks nothing like old school games. But if that's your taste, go for it, but I'm not seeing a hint of any of that in your attemps. Look at your attemps, look at their works and find out what you didn't do, what you can change and how you can achieve those looks.
"Noseless guy with a huge grin" It's a guy with a medical face mask.
Even when you tell me that it doesn't look like it, I can see the nuance of it. Well I feel that really homes in my point about using pixel art as an excuse for poor drawing skills.
I wasn't aware that people did that? Or could do that if they wanted to, considering how subtle a medium pixel art is
I guess I can crosspost from the programming thread since you guys are all talkin about bad pixel art. all of it in (super early prototype) action
