Made myself another wallpaper; This time it's based on the daedric helmet from Skyrim.
I think those fuzzy black outlines on everything detract from it.

they don't look as fuzzy on my doodling screen, but now that I'm on my other one I see it, thanks

The fuzzy lines are probably because it's been saved as a jpeg and is low rez or was resized, try zooming out on whatever app you are using to make sure you are getting decent resolution

Two quick(ish) things. Please note that I'm jumping into the conversation here without actually reading any posts earlier than the one I'm quoting so if this is all out of context I'm sorry and I don't mean to offend anyone. What I've written below is good general advice though. If anything is incorrect, please correct me.

1. What Mako said was true. Forgive him for his bluntness; that's just Mako and we love him for it. Or I do. Sometimes. Our relationship is confusing okay
I didn't understand why anybody would get angry over being asked to work creatively for free until somebody explained it to me, so I hope this makes sense:
If an artist comes to you and offers to work for free, that's great! It's grand and exciting (for both of you) but honesty is key. The artist should know at all times what the possibility of getting paid at any point in the future is. Stringing an artist along with magical quantum theoretical future payment that will never realistically exist isn't on. For instance, I'm volunteering at an animation place in New Zealand working on an animated feature film and I know that there's no chance of getting paid for this project. But it's okay, because I was the one who offered to work for free: I got in touch with them in the first place.
On the flipside, asking an artist to do something for free may be seen by the artist as an insult. People try all sorts of things to get creative people to work for free. They'll say things like 'but you're an artist and you love what you do, surely you don't mind doing it for free!' or 'It'll be great exposure for you!'. These things might be occasionally true, but most of the time the artist will laugh at the prospective client, punch him in the face and then run away. He'll laugh because the client's suggestions are ridiculous; would you ask a surgeon to work for free because they enjoy their job, or would you ask a taxi driver to give you a free ride because it would be good exposure? Of course not! The artist would punch the client in the face because he's got a lot of pent-up anger - he gets these faux job offers on a regular basis and he's sick of being treated every single day as though his job is a) super easy and relaxing and b) as though he can afford financially to dedicate dozens of hours of his time and not get paid. And he'd run away because, frankly, if he's anything like most of us creative types he doesn't have the upper body strength to whip out two decent punches in a row.
2. This is a community forum where we post our progress, questions, images for critique, butt pictures, etc. This isn't where we come to look for work. Sometimes the occasional project might pop up where two members decide to do something together for funsies and potential financial payout, but if we want to find work we'll 99% of the time look elsewhere.

also obvs if it's a casual project/for fun/guest-comic-on-an-established-comic/whatever it's not too bad. I dunno how I feel about it all to be honest. Maybe asking for expressions of interest for voluntary/potential-payment work is alright but directly asking an artist to work for free isn't fine? That makes more sense to me. Ethics are fucking hard it's like a fluid eckh how do I hold all of these ethics can I have a bucket please

This bit I quibble with, I'd be happy to see more work going around in CC tbh. It would be a motivator for all of us developing artists, could provide live fire demos of real jobs/working with somebody else's ideas, and connect this forum a bit better with the more major ones like GD.
I've worked for several facepunchers and they've been down-to-earth, grateful and otherwise pleasant clients every time.
Spent the weekend drawing some style concepts/bragging rights for a possible freelance commission. Forgot it was under a 2 x 3 in format so I may have overdone the details just a little bit...

That's really cool, though I wish I could see her shoes
I'll have to charge the client extra for those

I painted a quick self portrait while I was tripping
i got offered an illustration job by someone who has commissioned over 600 paintings/drawings/vectors/renders of his daughter
at first i thought it was bullshit but there's a tumblr full of it and some of the artwork is really really good. i was just gonna say "no sorry i'm too busy" but then i got thinking... if all these really good artists got involved, what if the fee is ridiculous? what if this guy pays hundreds for a single painting of his daughter?
anyways that's the end of my blog post
that's really cool man. I wish I had enough confidence (and people interested) to do commissions, I need money badly. Why don't you go for it?

that's like one of the artists I know who did a commission for this guy who wanted a "cow girl" and then the guy put an entire huge binder just full of hundreds of cowgirl commissions in front of him
yeh im genuinely interested now. i've got a fuck tonne of stuff on at the moment though so i'm gonna be blunt but polite and ask him how much it is he's offering

Uh, I recommend being able to recognise the effects of image scaling and jpeg compression before suggesting them as reasons for image quality.
Both of those things are absolutely without a doubt not the problem here. It looks a lot to me like he's just used a soft brush.
if we're sharing stories about stuff we've been contacted to do, this one time (at band camp), some guy contacted me on dA and asked me if i would draw his wife in my style. naked.
did i mention that his wife was at least 50?
i can still see the horror.
[editline]27th January 2014[/editline]
i didn't do it in the end.
another time, some guy asked me if i would draw watersports for him.
turns out the commission is $17... so i'm gonna pass
he did send me this though so at least it was not all in vain

Colored pencils on cardboard

I don't believe in dry coloring media
So, I'm still chugging along coloring this in, was wondering if anyone had any input on the colors? I dunno much about color composition, so these may all be horrible. :v:

(click for big)
so it turns out that my commission histories are pretty boring. The most unusual one was to draw someone's marysue-ish pony oc for fucking 50 bucks.
Work towards selling your work rather than doing commissions, it's more profitable and you get more creative freedom. Go on sites like reddit and see what the current top tv show or movie is for example and do something that a lot of people will easily buy prints of.

Where would you sell prints like that? afaik selling prints depicting copyrighted characters & stuff is illegal and most places won't accept it

Well, drawing is nothing but a hobby for me, so I do all these commissions just for fun, and only if I like the description. I mean, I come home from work to rest a bit, so the last thing I would want to do is draw some boring ugly stuff.
And selling my work would be a pretty hard thing, since all my personal stuff is 99% made of endless silly soldiers lol.
