I'm thinking the guitar pedal got you in, it shows you understand design, and more than anything they want to see that from you, same with my course (games art design) its an art course like yours. Its great to be able to produce nice work with understanding of artistic values, but they can teach you that, what its harder to teach is an understanding of how things work and why they look feel and act like they do.

Wicker was this your personal statement? Mate art teachers are all shit, but I wouldn't have thought it was the best idea to take the piss out of them in your PS :L
"Here, I am communicating how I feel about the transition from my
current life to my future. I have split my story into 3 parts. The main
part being me in-between my past and my future, pushing forwards in
my life's journey. My past is represented by darkness. It's bleak and
frustrating, making me feel as if I am being held back as a person;
living a rural life away from people and opportunities. My future is
represented as bright, a door to opportunities to develop as a person
and develop my creative aspirations - so I hope.
P.s - I am unable to provide any work from Higher Art, 2012 due to the
laziness/incompetence of my Art & Design "Teacher." She did not
acquire any student's work back from the Scottish Qualifications
Authority and I am saddened to think that the work of my peers and I
are either occupying the upper layers of the atmosphere or dusting the
bottom of a cat's litter tray"

No no, that's just a note describing a particular piece of work - it was required - my personal statement was a lot longer than that.
Also, my art teacher was lazy and incompetent. The joys of being in a rural school in the middle of nowhere.
Also, so far In Uni I've learned nothing about actual art. There was one module we had for like a few weeks where we learned a few things but I could've done with the whole semester for that - we were supposed to, but the Uni is unorganised an unprepared for so many students.

Post needs fixing, took me a minute to find your question.
Well I went to school on an Island off the coast of Scotland.
I'm currently studying at Glasgow Caledonian University.
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
So I did something without having a panic attack or tearing it up and throwing it across the room.
I still hate it however:

You definitely need to spend a lot more time practicing perspective. I'm shit at art as well but it's pretty clear you've missed the mark with your perspective lines in that piece if you did them at all.
I feel you on the art is frustrating part, you just have to embrace the hate.

You should do some more simple stuff for practice, as it seems you don't really understand how to structure a drawing, you just copy kind of.
If you work on your art skills enough you have the power to reach or even overcome your peers in their abilities.

You aren't drawing the angles and proportions exactly as they are on the image, you need to measure better. A good example of this is the back wheel. Why have you drawn it so that it is leaning to the right when it's not like that on the image? 95% of realistic drawing is observation. If you can trace a picture, your skills with a pencil are not the problem - the problem is translating what you see / imagine to the paper.
It also looks like you spent far, far too short a time on that. As a beginner, you should IMO be spending at least an hour on a picture of a car to make it look mostly OK. I would recommend spending even longer, maybe a couple of hours.
Finally, use a pencil. You aren't currently at a level where you can draw everything right first time, so the ability to start light and build up is critical (and the occasional use of an eraser too).
The thing is, I can do simple Geometric form in perspective near perfectly if I go ahead and draw vanishing points and stuff. I got an A in Advanced Higher Graphics so perspective is nothing new to me.

Thing is, since I got to Uni I've been told to use pens. I tutor actually took my eraser off me for the lesson and told me to draw with pen. They're very persistent on getting people to draw with pens. They really don't like people drawing with pencils.
I was under the impression that it would help both confidence and skill by drawing with pen, it means you think more about where to put lines (or so I'm told)
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
And to answer your question about the wheel, I have no idea, I'm just really bad at drawing ellipses.
That and being in pen I couldn't exactly go fix it.
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
Boom, 2 minutes and there, a perspective drawing. Nothing special, just boxes but I do understand perspective to a certain degree.

Does the assignment ask for hand-drawn concept art specifically? Because if you're anxious about the project itself and not your learning progress right now, maybe things like mood pieces from renders are a better idea.
Art of real cars which isn't a modeling sheet seems kinda weird to me as well, or are these simply for practice? For a racing game I'd think of images of race tracks mostly. Layout, mood, that stuff.
I obviously don't know anything about the assignment but just some food for thought, maybe you can think of some method that you're way more comfortable with so that you have a backup plan and can do the project with a clear head

We don't get told many specifics really. The only specifics I'm aware of is: "Cars needs 4 wheels - it's for a cinema company - it has to be built in Unity."
Everything else they just expect you to do. So I have to show evidence of a design process so yes that involves concept sketches of everything.
These current drawings are just for practice before I jump ahead and start designing cars. However there is going to be a variety of cars on different themes.
Also what do you mean "mood pieces from renders" ?
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
Another thing, should I maybe try using a ruler on my next attempt?
Thing is, since I got to Uni I've been told to use pens. I tutor actually took my eraser off me for the lesson and told me to draw with pen. They're very persistent on getting people to draw with pens. They really don't like people drawing with pencils.

The main reason you should use pens when learning, and the main reason they make you do so, is to make sure you don't erase your lines.
Instead of erasing and perfectionising something you don't even know how to do, they want you to just draw, create, and leave errors be. Happy accidents also happen, and what you personally thought of as a flaw can be percieved as something positive by others.
Pencils gives too much freedom to alter and change when you should just focus on drawing a lot and learn how to handle your strokes. It's not so much about where to put lines as much as how to not use too many lines.
Well yeah, hence my use of pens.
I always get confused when I come here though, everyone tells me to do things differently from my tutors yet either way is justifiable..
Well yeah, hence my use of pens.

Everyone has different ways to approach art and how to learn it, and everyone learns differently as well.
There is no right and wrong in art, but there definitely exists methods that are generally more well suited for most people, and there are definitely methods that are worse than others.
The art tutor can not be expected to always be right, nor can anyone here either. It's up to you to do what you feel makes the most sense, what seems the most right to you.

Well, I'm not sure if "mood piece" is an actual term, sorry, but what I meant was something like this: When you've finished some cars and environment props in 3D, you set up some scenes, render it out, and do some paint over to convey the certain mood the race track or environment should have.
All I wanted to say basically was that if you're really uncomfortable with the stuff you're going for right now and mostly care about the project itself instead of improving your skill in those areas, you might want to look for different methods of producing content.
But I'm mostly just rambling, rather listen to the other people in this thread, I'm no artist

If you're doing concept art I imagine the design process is more important than the technical skill if they let you on the course without a significant drawing portfolio.
I don't know the assignment at all, what medium you are supposed to work with etc. but it sounds like I would focus on documenting a comprehensive design process rather than focusing on what I can't do. I'm talking real life references, compositions, experimental quick shots then detailing one or two, messing around with different palettes, rebalancing the colours etc.
Like I said, I don't know the assignment so I can't really say if that's the sort of thing they are looking for, but I would recommend you just work with what you've got and focus on what you can do to deliver a good piece of work.
At the same time, get your practice in at a reasonable pace.

You're stressing over this way too much - everyone in your course is there to improve or to help you improve and everyone there has been really bad at some point. Art is mostly mileage and doing it even if you're not satisfied, so having confidence can really help you

I don't see what design you were trying to show other then a generic fantasy ruin. The perspective is also off throwing and confusing. Though I can appreciate that you too the time to do each brick one by one. nice job on the foliage too.

Just kind of a mix of Asian and western architecture. These were actually meant to be orthographic, but that hasn't worked I guess? Thanks for the compliments as well though.
