A word of advice when it comes to pixel art, if you follow the rules of atmospheric perspective that you would with painting, but on a much smaller scale, you can get a nicer volumetric effect. Saturated colors are pushed forward and neutral colors are pushed back, so if your shadows are more saturated than your highlights it will look like they're coming forward. Furthermore, objects that are closer to the viewer should have more contrast and definition, while objects in the back should be a bit softer, especially on the edges. Also, putting outlines on all your objects will flatten your piece significantly. You have a nice start but you're falling for a lot of the things beginners tend to do. Try to think in planes rather than shapes, you don't want outlines, you want volume. Layering colors is a good way to get the effect you're trying to replicate with your outlines on the grass for example.
Here's a quick edit, maybe itll help you

WAH! You're good at picking colors! They really set a good atmosphere that's for sure.
I really like what you did with both the tree and grass (in fact I'm editing the tree right now) but the grass seems to stray a bit from the "cartoony" feel and lean more towards a more "real" style imo, though it might just be me.
Here's my take on it using that saturation rule that you explained.

The main thing that I changed was the grass and the tree (though the tree isn't nearly as noticeable as the grass). I didn't touch the sky at all as I do prefer the cheery and bright blues as opposed to the more washed out sky. I can't decide if I like the one with the de-saturated grass more than the original one though.
I generally tend to stay away from low saturated/washed out colors though, I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or not :C.
You mainly want low saturation in the darkest shadows or the places that are farthest away from the viewer. It creates an illusion of depth. It's the same effect that you see when you look at a landscape and it gets hazier (and more neutral) because of the light reflecting off the particles in the air, only on a much smaller scale. Imo if you're actually interested in pixel art and want to continue to improve your skills you should move into a more realistic style at first, because once you understand the basics of how to create volume properly and everything else you'll be much better at applying your own cartoony style to it later on.

ok
So I was on my way home and this guy was playing guitar in the subway and I've seen him before and he's really good so I didn't get on the first train and then we started talking and he was really cool so I stood there for about an hour drawing him and it ended up being a really good sketch and I gave it to him before I left. I feel really content right now, too bad my phone was dead I would have taken a picture of it. At one point this guy behind me started filming me drawing and the guitar guy (James) stands up and goes up to him and hes like dont do that man that's not cool and the guy walks away.

This reminds me of how I met a guy near my subway station, playing the killers instead of some shit this kind of people usually play. So I asked him if i can join in, went home, took my guitar, and we played a couple of songs together. Now he's one of my best friends.
Not really realted to drawing, but still one of the coolest moments of my life.
How does one stop themselves from being so put-off from their own drawings? I want to be able to draw fan art of things I enjoy, as well as my own characters, but simply drawing shapes on a piece of paper is starting to make me not want to go anywhere near the stuff. I feel like I'm not making any progress and nothing seems to come out right for me.
It's like I can see the picture in my head, but I just can't apply it to paper. I tend to just draw squiggly arms and round faces with dots for eyes.

Depends how you wanna go about it. You can drill yourself until you hate it, or you can just do it when you honestly wanna take a knock at it.
Sup thread.
Have a dump of some things I've drawn.

The last one was finished not five minutes ago.
They're nothing compared to some of the stuff I've seen in here, but nonetheless, I figured I should share a few.
I have had an acute lack of inspiration for the past month, also I just havent felt like drawing that much, so finally I got off my ass (not really) and made something.

I pretty much looked through a bunch of environmental concept art, and I want to analyse and then learn to copy some of the methods used in them. And hey I might add something of my own too.

If you want to get there you have years of work ahead of you. No way around it. You will be shit initially, but the good news is that you will get better if you stick at it and follow the right paths in learning. Guaranteed, you will improve. The question is, do you want to be able to draw fan art and characters badly enough to follow through?
If we could all draw through our mind's eye we'd all be shit hot straight away. The thing is what you imagine is barely an image, it's more like a forced sense-memory of an image. You're working from feelings you associate with things, colours, and shapes. if you try to imagine something or other than everyone knows what it looks like - let's say Bowser. You know what he looks like right? You can "picture" him in a general way, as a whole - you might even get what you think are perfectly complete images of him in your head, for a fraction of a second at a time - but your brain is probably just fooling you with composite information. Hence you can't sit down and draw the picture out of your head. But with a couple of years of work behind you, drawing those shapes on a piece of paper as foundation, you may be able to glean more from these fragments in your mind's eye. If you draw primitive shapes, if you do extensive measuring, figure drawing, still life drawings, blah blah blah, you'll grow adept at judging shapes and proportions and you'll comprehend forms in three dimensions better. Not to mention vital anatomy knowledge. Eventually you'll be able to identify workable elements from the pictures in your head - maybe not a lot, maybe a shape or two, but enough to get down some rough lines or a vague silhouette or gesture onto paper or canvas. By this time, you should also be good enough to build upon that and flesh out your design cumulatively.
So knuckle down, and always remember that the ideas guy is as worthless in art as anywhere else.

Bad advice, you have to work at it to be good. An occasional attempt at the bottom of the curve won't get anyone anywhere.
the occasional sob session, waves of desperation and self hatred while you ply your trade is perfectly normal :v:
i feel like i'm a really hard worker because my pen nib has gotten so worn down it no longer works
but in reality it's taken 4 years for this to happen
I only seem to use the same square inch of my tablet. It feels awful under the stylus now

Something I did in my spare time to try and practice making my own brushes and drawing looser. Had the idea of a floating city built in the wreck of an old oil rig (still gotta add the city part). Gonna go and drop some photos in and finish up details to make it a proper piece. Still not 100% on the colors, gonna go and work on them some more.

this is great but i feel like the smaller ship (that looks operable?) should be... smaller? more civilian looking? just to me right now it reads like a oil tanker, partly because it's so big, which kinda takes away from the grandeur of the oil rig wreck

It is an oil tanker, and I'm gonna beat it up and have it also be part of the city. But I get what you're saying. I could push it to be a bit darker so it doesn't draw your eye away as much.

I think the amount of texture in the bg is at odds with the smooth wholly digital appearance of the gals. Also the blue girl is getting lost a bit against the backdrop there, it's real bright but the lighting on her face is faaairly flat, esp. around the nose and mouth, whereas the ginger girl looks more like she belongs in the background, with the bg light affecting her very believably. Nice piece though
really underestimating these 30 min time limits, theme for this was Temple Guardian. Might continue to flesh it out

Did this to amuse a friend. It was meant as a lip sync test, so it's not much, but i figured it might get a laugh out of someone.

To come: More details, a vast, distant city/landscape. Night time with colors? I have a fear of colors and continuous strokes when using my tablet and I feel like it has kept me from progressing over the years.
Felt like making another picture featuring an F-14. Used Gimp 2.8 and Photoshop CC.
