If it's abandoned you can definitely take out that ridiculous white light behind the truck. It looks totally artificial, like it's the intro to an old film showing on a big screen on the side of the building.. No suggestion of interior, it's just an undisguised airbrush mark on a black plane
it's something implied in the novel this is adapted from but i'll have another look at incorporating it more physically into the word and more subtly [editline]28th February 2014[/editline] your writing style is very aggressive btw mako
criticism on this please? rushed the post-processing a bit hence the shoddy blur but other than that i'm feeling totally lost on it and it's getting me down doesn't help that it's university work that i don't have much interest in. after having so much fun with that taz piece (and after antianan's criticism basically allowed me to make it the best piece i've ever done) i just feel a bit lost and unable to match it
reminds me a lot of this image in my references folder: [editline]28th February 2014[/editline] they look very alike actually. i hope it helps you out somehow. [editline]28th February 2014[/editline] the light behind the truck should probably be scrapped if you're going for an abandoned look. the background structure + trees combination could use some re-thinking. here's a picture of the woodpecker seen from an angle similar to your piece: here's another pic which really gives off the scale of the array: [t]http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/40518566.jpg[/t] experiment though, if it doesn't look good then stick to what you have, i just realized your radio station does look pretty big. apart from that it looks pretty good and the lighting is interesting. it feels warm & comfortable yet uncharted/unexplored & potentially dangerous. the stop sign helps that.
that's really handy mate thanks a lot done a tiny bit more work [t]http://24.media.tumblr.com/8f5c97d03d4e0cd3660d8ad499b7b2c6/tumblr_n1pjjvbl2O1s32mjoo1_r1_1280.jpg[/t]
just one more thing: the perspective in the barrel next to the truck is really off hahaha
i'm not too sure how the composition works on that image. my eye is drawn to the truck first. i'm guessing it's a sort of radial composition since everything seems to lead back to it.
it's something implied in the novel this is adapted from but i'll have another look at incorporating it more physically into the word and more subtly [editline]28th February 2014[/editline] your writing style is very aggressive btw mako
hah sorry mate, I look for aggressive crit myself, I think it's just in my nature to give it. No soft soap for anybody! Anyway, I think overall you just need to try to be a lot less clinical with your approach. With a big scene or space like that you need to populate it with shit, and with your approach that means painstakingly drawing every element you wanna put in there and then presumably going back and laboriously painting in the colours to mask the lines. The whole thing really looks like a drawing, not much like a painting. It doesn't look like something you'd do with a paintbrush in the end. I fucked about your piece a bit to give some idea of what I'm suggesting - http://i.imgur.com/uRCrkXX.jpg If you just wade in with a big fat brush you can block stuff in until you're happy with the overall feel before you do any sort of rendering - and if you become good with that expressive type of painting language, like sketching in paint, you might not even need to render anything. The whole mish mash of samurai brushstrokes will work if you can get the read right, if you get the shapes and values right. Obviously my slapdash job there isn't great but you know the sort of thing I mean. Like this - http://gyazo.com/b741e01a59c29f153b4f0f126b20dde0.png I'm sure you're familiar with dozens of artists who do that kinda thing. With your stuff it looks like a pretty precise line drawing coloured in, without opportunity for much expression, which makes your pieces tend to look pretty constipated and "careful". And yeah as I said any heavy detail looks like it would be physically painful for you to achieve in that style. even if you're not comfortable drawing out a piece with paint, you could at least make your linework lots looser and less considered, so that the lines are totally just a guide for your paint instead of holding your paint together and being a bitch to get away from (I constantly have this issue myself)

Right now I'm not really feeling the play of light in the scene. Also you gotta fix up your perspective. Especially on the ground plane. [t]http://i.imgur.com/xbQwslM.jpg[/t] The horizontal perspective's pretty good, except for where the ground meets the wall. But the frontal perspective needs a lot of work. The truck feels flattened because it's wheels are pretty much on the same plane. The shadows from the truck toward the viewer should either match up, or be greater than the perspective (depending on how far away that light is) and the gas station's roof/boards on the leftmost house need to match the grid. Download the tool Carapace. It makes perspective grids for you.
That's not where the vanishing point is though. It's more to the left at the end of the truck.
I don't want to post a bigass wall o' text so here's just a snippet of something I've been dicking off on. for the one of you who'll actually read this tell me how my writing sucks.
"Stay in formation, and watch your footing," the captain rasped as loudly as he could while still remaining quiet. "We move as one. Don't break until I command it." Muddled voices of acknowledgment spread throughout his men to both his sides. Steadily they moved across the wet grass, under the twilight of the waning eclipse. The unit stuck together in a loose square formation with their leather bound shields drawn up, and their short spears pointed forward, lightly clanking and knocking as they moved. The air was filled with a thick wafting fog that wasn't the easiest to see through, but still they marched. Light of the eclipse glimmered off the studs of their rag-tag assortments of studded leather and light chain as they crept forward. Suddenly a gauntly soldier to the Captain's right poked his head forward, scrunching his face like some wrinkly old woman that just ate something sour. "Captn' Mann, sir, I see som'tin," whispered the man. He nudged his spear forward. "Off there, in 'ta thick of it." Captain Mann squinted, trying to see past the rolling fog. Abruptly he swung his fist up. "Slow halt. Spears ready," he said in a stern voice. "Keep your eyes forward." The unit came to a slow halt, and the men began to move closer together, nervously peering straight ahead. Mann drew his sword and gripped it tightly. The world was dead silent, and the eclipse had fully set over the horizon, leaving only the light from the moon and the stars. Then, slowly, a large black figure began to take shape in the fog. Like a dark shadow it stood off in the distance, almost invisible. "Bless the Sisters, look at tha' forsaken creature," said one of the men in the formation. "Wha'? Where? I don't see a damned thing," came another. "Are you bloody blind or what?" "Who isn't in this damned fog!?" "I'm sure as shit not, you fool. Look far'word and open 'yer eyes!" Whatever it was in the fog, they now had it's attention. It began to move closer, appearing to grow even larger in size, well above even the tallest man in the unit. "Silence!" Mann snapped. "Keep your bloody mouths shut, or I'll have your tongues removed!" The black figure began to pick up speed, and couldn't have been more than ten yards ahead of the formation. Frighteningly enough, despite its size, it was completely silent, and moved with unnatural speed and grace. The men began to hunch and brace themselves, anxiously waiting for their captain's order. Mann moved slightly forward outside of the formation's front row, sword and shield ready. "Hooold!" he yelled, raising his sword above his head. "Wait for my command!" Staunchly he stood as the creature began to quicken, but just as it came within a few feet of Mann, it suddenly stopped. Even standing still it was hard to make out what it was. It looked as if the creature was just a ominously dark shadow, with no definition between itself and the fog. Mann's men stood firm, eyes fixated between him and the shadow creature. The Captain stood still as stone, like a statue cut from the hardest marble, staring down the otherworldly beast. Then, without warning the fog around the formation began to dissipate. "What's this now?" one soldier mumbled. "Fuck'ef I know mate," responded another. "The fog is goin'." The rest of the formation began to follow along, filling the silent field with a low mumble of confusion. Mann, however paid no attention. He stood just as still, fog or not, sword steadily raised above his head. It was then his men noticed what was happening. Now, just an arms reach in front of Mann, stood the black figure. The fog was rolling into it, as if it was flowing through an open door. "It's sucking up the fog!' one man exclaimed. "At least we can see the da-" "Split formation!" Mann interrupted as he flung his sword, blade down into the soft dirt. "Prepare the flame! Spells to the front!" His men immediately snapped into line, and in one fluid motion broke to both sides with great speed. They began to surround the creature on each side with their weapons drawn. Just as suddenly as the order was given three figures with hooded cloaks darted forward from the center of the breaking formation. Mann jumped back from his planted blade while drawing a dirk from his belt while the three hooded men charged past him. They slid to the ground around the blade, raised their arms towards it, and began chanting. The blade started to glow with runes of burning red light. "Look! The monster!" shouted one of the soldiers. The creature was growing darker as the last wisps of fog were sucked into the black of its body.
I've been practicing writing and anatomy and drawing in general at the same time because I still half want to write a novel based on my ideas, and half want to turn said novel into a web comic.
