Weird, I don't think I've ever met someone who has that
I studied synesthesia quite a bit because I have it too. I think it's something like one in every 23 people who has it and it's quite common that people with synesthesia are also rather creative.
1/23? That's an awfully high number for something you never hear anyone having and most people not even knowing exists.
Hnnnnnnngggggggggggg it's been a hell of a long time since I touch the tablet again.

Things still subject to change or I don't even know if I'll finish them because it's so time consuming and I'm always short on time :(

It might just be because I'm not familar with the guy in the ref but I keep seeing a young, crazy haired Elton John.

I wondered the same, but apparently it was a pretty popular topic back in the 80s. I also think the fact that it's so varied both in expression and strength contributes to it. IIRC it's very rare to have hallucinations based on synesthesia and far more common to have an inner eye/ear experience. A lot of people are also unaware of it because they've never bothered to question if others experience something similar.
I read about a guy who couldn't eat or drink when he was driving because he'd visually hallucinate the expression of the taste or texture. It was so strong it would obstruct his view.
Anyways, content:

Does anyone have some good suggestions for his right arm? I know there's something wrong with how it's posed but I just can't figure it out. Also before we bring back the "ew penis" argument, the person commissioned this used the word "ken doll" to describe his crotch area.

the legs are too short.
i mean there's a bunch of problems apart from the legs. the head is huge, the neck is misproportioned, his arms are too long, etc. the pose is overall really stiff too. right now it shows really weird muddy values so i would recommend doing a few value studies & anatomical studies.
i don't want to sound rude but what do you mean by somebody commissioned that?
the proportions on that guy are messed up.
he's got massive barrel chestshoulders but his legs are pretty stubby.
his right leg (our left) thigh is also shorter than his left.
his arms are also way long. he looks like a gorilla
also, shading to black makes your art look like dirt. in the colour sense.
Ouch, thanks a ton guys. I immediately saw some really big flaws when you pointed to them. I'll update later with a version that's currently looking way better already.
And it's paid commission, so I'm really glad I could get some sense knocked into this.

i'm not one to judge but i don't think you should be doing paid comissions already!
A thing for my school assignment.

Are the proportions all right?I'm not really confident when it comes to drawing kids.

I was asked to by a friend after she looked through my portfolio. I won't say no to a bit of pocket money as long as she's satisfied with the work I provide. However, for anything professional I'll agree with you.
i'm not one to judge but i don't think you should be doing paid comissions already!
people will pay for anything (cough gaia online cough deviantart cough)
also i had an idea for a painting exercise we could do. someone comes up with 3 thumbnails every week and the people participating have to do a painting using that thumbnail as a base.

If people are willing to pay for your work, do it.

I'm too tired to search for stuff for me to make so I'm all for it

The pose is a little weak but the body is actually pretty good[sp]imo[/sp]. it looks like you really tried to 'fit' the head on there though, it also looks like you tried to cram the eye into that goggle slot afterwards, you might wanna think about where the eyes are while drawing things like the goggles.
I did another little quick transform tool thingy too

Flip your canvas regularly

Thought about this as well but I never figured I could be relied upon to host/participate in something like that because of that time shit
But if YOU did it I totally support that
Well apart from the one arm everything is exterior, and it looks very speedily done. If you want it to be amazing you should spend more time on the preliminary stages. I guess you can either fill out all of the limbs properly with bones and muscles and that, or you can just do the cleanup thing and it'll look essentially how it does now but mistakes will be easier to see and then you can continually tweak it until it looks ok
The latter isn't ideal but the former might be beyond you for the time being so you might have to settle
Sadly, this was done hastily since I wanted to show him more then one sketch yesterday so he could chose which pose he would like.
Thanks for the info. I'll go flesh it out a lot more and tweak it. Thanks!
If people are willing to pay for your work, do it.
kinda true and kind of not true
there's a balance that has to be reached when you're trying to break into industries like this. on the one hand there's a massive issue in art, music, and games, with people being hugely undervalued but also people undervaluing their own work. this is the result of most clients not understanding the work involved at all but it's also the result of something that's intrinsic to most artists who are good at what they do - they've got no hubris to speak of at all
i guess that's probably why they're good artists in the first place - because they've never thought they were very good so they always strove to improve themselves. but yeh it creates this issue where people are way too shy to ask for more money
BUT that said there are people who shoot themselves in the foot by breaking into paid work way too early in their artistic careers - you don't wanna start taking paid work when you can barely draw a human because you're going to end up being in circles of clients with low standards and getting yourself known for being an amateur artist. of course it's possible to break out of something like that but if the work load piles up it's difficult to find the time to learn and expand and then hey before you know it you haven't really experimented or improved and it has been a year because you've just been working to deadlines in the safest and most efficient way possible
this happened to me over 2012/13 really badly - i was getting cheap commissioned/freelance work and doing painting for uni on a really tight schedule and, even though i was doing some studying, i really didn't improve very much at all because i was just plodding through the deadlines
so from sept 2012 to april 2013 i went from this
[t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/312/1/1/hotline_miami_by_chestymcgee-d5kf37z.jpg[/t]
to this
[t]http://th02.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2013/084/1/a/race_to_the_village_by_chestymcgee-d5z8jwo.jpg[/t]
which although hard to compare it's obvious it isn't really any improvement at all
where-as this year i've fucked off all the freelance painting and dropped most of my painting for university, and yet by not caring about clients and by loosening up, i went from this (in november 2013)
[t]http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/313/9/f/stalkingthestalkies_by_chestymcgee-d6tl0er.jpg[/t]
to this, just a couple of weeks ago
[t]http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/083/8/5/run_u_stupid_fat_oafs_by_chestymcgee-d7bbfmx.jpg[/t] [t]http://25.media.tumblr.com/ec848e67bbfea6961fa778ea7b28d787/tumblr_n1m6afwmNA1s32mjoo1_r1_1280.png[/t]
and that was with a break where i didn't paint at all for at least a month
sorry for the super long rambling post but what i'm getting at is that when people are just starting out and not very good, they should be painting for themselves and for their own learning, not to please clients
of course there is the flipside that being forced to paint can really make you improve just through sheer workload, i think there has to be a balance. doing that as part of education or with flexible, relaxed deadlines would be the best happy medium
Sadly, this was done hastily since I wanted to show him more then one sketch yesterday so he could chose which pose he would like.

And to clarify, post it here again when it's clearer exactly what's happening in the pose, and it'll be easier to help since it'll be clean
Jesus christ looking at my art from even a few months ago I see it now and go "Eugh that's horrible". It kinda sucks I don't "like" my old art anymore but it's awesome I can see my own improvements and I can definitely be proud of all of it

I find a lot of stuff I do I look at and think 'meh', then weeks / months later I look back at it and think it looks good.
Probably because it takes me a while to leave behind the process of actually drawing it.

i'm exactly the opposite. when i finish a piece i'm like "this is the best piece i've ever done" and 3 hours later i'm like "eh".

Then redraw your old pieces and make them better.
Then redraw your old pieces and make them better.
The thing about redrawing old works (for me at least) is it almost always lacks the essence I put into it the first time, and never feels as awesome/great.
Perhaps it was because it was a mediocre drawing to begin with and I thought it was awesome the first time :v:
I think I'm done with this, now
