Yeah, I didn't mean to say "If I cant do it no one can", I just cant tell if its painted or rendered or what.

like a bullshot; its a mixture of both.
Is it an actual drawing/painting? I know professional concept artists are good but there's so much detail. Would it be a digital painting or is it more photo manipulation or what. After trying to draw something similar I find it hard to believe someone could create something like that from scratch.
as a side note to what menter said, the image you've posted isn't concept art. even if it was painted it still wouldn't be concept art
promotional art =/= concept art
this is concept art:

Honestly I thought they were men until you mentioned it. Either the chins or the noses (or both I dunno) are causing this.
Not sure if this is intentional.

I was digging the low poly art stuff since I usually never get round to texturing my high poly stuff, these things only took around 10-20 mins for each scene I spent far more time working on the render settings.
The dof needs a lot more sampling on that second one. It looks really rough.

I'm an absolute fucking noob, so excuse my questions, but what methods did you use exactly to make these? I'm still at loss at how people reproduce different types of art, I've been researching to see what's best for me to start out in

if you wanna start out in something do gray scale photo studies. and answering your question: i really don't know what "methods" i used.

Indeed, I'm not really used to using dof either.

Also I got a bunch of art I made at college so far, If I have the time I'll show them.
It's all print making, photography, drawing and painting.
All sorts of stuff really even drew some naked woman.

You oughta get a 30 day trial of Camtasia (the only recording software I've had any luck with and frankly the best I've seen in terms of functionality) and record yourself doing some paintings! I'm always interested to see the steps people take
I decided to upload some photography but I'm gonna get another picture and more tomorrow because the lights in my girlfriends house are shit.

they were drawn bulkier than normal, yes
harsh angles and broad features were used intentionally to help express that they are from a culture where strength is valued over looks

did two versions of a piece since the painting wasn't up to what I imagined it should be. Think I'm going to need more practice on gouache even if it's the only thing I have left when it comes to colours aside from colouring pencils.
used this one as a reference

All referenced, no tracing. Every time I try drawing strictly from my imagination it ends up terrible. :(
Yeah I want to say they look incredibly traced excepting how out of perspective a lot of the lines look. I can't even fathom what sort of advice to prescribe you.

It takes a whole lot of development to become capable of that, a lot of so called professionals rely on direct reference believe it or not. In fact a lot of famous artists have done so I believe. I personally think everyone serious about art should strive to be better than that but whatever, my point is you shouldn't expect it to come quickly :v:
Cars like the ones you seem to like are fairly complex combinations of forms. You would improve a lot if you worked on the composite elements - cylinders, cuboids, cones..

as far as I'm aware, pretty much all artists who work in realism or draw designs based on real world forms use reference; it's nothing to be ashamed of, and seeing it as 'lesser' just shows ignorance of how the real world operates
You don't have to reference everything, and relying solely on reference shouldn't be any kind of substitute for proper studies of anatomy, etc, but neither Da Vinci, Michelangelo or Syd Mead could've done what they've done without reference

You really need to work on your values. I had no idea what I was looking at until you showed the reference pic. I love the concept now that I see what you're doing, but try and make both the reference and your own art in black and white and compare them. Maybe place the side by side as thumbnails.

With the live model those were done in 30-45 mins each we had to be quite fast trying different techniques, I have many more if you guys want to see more that is.
Here's the photos : http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1266844&p=44603670&viewfull=1#post44603670
you had 30-45 minutes to do those?
when i was doing life drawing i had 5 minutes at most, one minute at least, sometimes even 30 seconds.
