I've been playing around a bit with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro on my Android tablet. Still getting a feel for it. Overall, I like it.

I stopped being lazy and did digital linework over my pencil sketch like Mako suggested

Looks a lot more cohesive!
You might think about using pen pressure to greater effect, and maybe play around with smoother brushes.. but then again you might like the even line thickness and aliasing, it's just not my thing, very MSPainty

case in point, I think the thumbnail looks a lot nicer because the lines appear smooth. With some variance in line weight I think it'd look a lot more natural
I also recommend contouring or bisecting forms when you're sketching to get a better idea of portraying three dimensions. This will make your 2d shapes better and help when it comes to drawing characters that look like they're affected by perspective (still important in cartoony stuff if you want integrity in your work)

Couple of things from my sketchbook. Photos because I can't bear to remove them for scanning.

I think it's very important not to be precious in any sense about your work, especially in the early stages (I mean of your development, not of individual drawings). It'll make you work slower, where it's probably best to aim for quantity over quality (albeit with the right instruction)
Try to let go of keeping clean linework, focusing on outlines and the like. Draw from observation, accurately. Don't worry if things look messy or you finished result looks ostensibly terrible in comparison to more simplified stuff that you're accustomed to drawing, the important thing to begin with is getting shapes and proportions correct. Everything else can be built up, one skill or technique on top of others, but lay the foundation first - draw things as they actually appear instead of an interpretation of them. Look up measuring.

New page ffs
Cannot be bothered scanning traditional work so I'll just snap what I have open on my desk right now

Some comp thumbnails from film
fucking awful photograph sorry bout that
Fair enough. Though I had mostly just meant I don't like tearing pages out of the sketchbook.
It's a nice book :v:
i always just throw my sketchbook into the scanner because i don't like to tear my pages either lol
i like having them neat and in one book
[editline]10th May 2014[/editline]
but he's talking about the lines not the quality of the photo lol
I know, I'm just clarifying what my original point was. (Also those weren't drawn from reference for once, although that's usually what I do.)

Is it No Country For Old Men?
That's 1/3 of the films on there. They get blurrier as you go down the page, challenge mode

The last row is There Will Be Blood.
2/3
The third film is 'Food Fight!' (2012) IIRC.
The other might be Gangs of New York. Not sure though.
Hello there, I've just started out with my drawing using a drawing tablet and would like some critiques or advice to help me improve?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/154024581/Mistah%20Freetz%20full.png
This was my first full picture, basically getting used to drawing with my tablet and Paint TOOL Sai
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/154024581/fritznryo.png
This was my second picture, and personally an improvement of the first picture in some ways, though I am taking the pictures one step at a time, with them just in a basic pose in the picture.
So yeah, any advice would be appreciated.

Draw people naked, with a pencil, from reference. Your pictures aren't really worth the time it would take to crit them, because there is so much that can be said about improving them. This is the case a lot of the time when artists are starting out; you just need to rethink your approach. Learn in manageable tiers. Before you consider drawing up original characters, learn to draw bodies, to draw faces. Before attempting to simplify these things into a style, gain proficiency in realism.

i'm really digging doing all the combine texture work stuff. i'll try and come up with a few combine synth designs after this just for fun.
Does anyone have any recommended reading on character design? I feel like everyone elses character designs are always so much more interesting haha
One i recently worked on...

Cross contour! Varying line thickness! HOENN REMAKE HYPE! What more could the average layman ask for?
besides a background, proper shading, an interesting pose, you know what i'm just going to post this and go

The only thing I don't agree with is this idea that you shouldn't bother working on original characters until you learn how to draw. I say do both. Practice your observational work a lot, but have fun and doodle cool shit(That probably looks terrible) on the side.
Well if it helps you stay the course where you would otherwise give up because it's no fun. But if that isn't the case then you're better off staying on task
Although I do think you should take breaks to make up your own figures, so you can see prevalent mistakes and stuff. Full character designs.. idk since I haven't done too much of that, maybe it would be beneficial too. just doesn't really seem like it would
I drew Chaos Spacemarine.

Can't say for sure, but this green on the bottom feels really out of place for me. Some orange or anything warm could fit better imo. Still a really good piece, dude.
the green is much more in line with the various nebulae and starstuff that's floating around in xen.
