Starting to try and visualize our environments for our game. We're apparently going to be getting the same kind of radiosity lighting as Battlefield, so I had fun playing with the lighting in the scene.
What kind of world is it? Because the style of items is not very real-world, at least not current day, or maybe my life-time. It seems to have a somewhat advanced kind of scanner-printer machine, yet it has old monitors. And the desks, not really sure you would see that in an office environment. I like the style, it seems to be some sort of abandoned facility that was taken over or something, since the windows are boarded up, but I'm not sure if this is a fictional world or a "real" one.
Things I think of when looking at this aside from that:
There are no chairs
The power strips are really big
perspective seems off on a few objects like the brown drawers next to the foreground desk, and a few other objects like the large tape spool machine on the middle back desk
I do like the lighting though.
Also i wasn't going to say this, but I noticed someone else said it too, it does remind me of the stanley parable a little bit. But that could just be the office environment.
Seriously? How do you people draw. Drawing is so fucking frustrating to me it makes me want to scream. I can never get what I'm visualizing to look right, and I certainly can't draw from a reference. Call me whiny, but drawing is the only thing nowadays that legitimately makes me want to kill myself. Like, I want to grab the knife I keep in my desk drawer and start hacking at my arm. It's kind of scary honestly.
I personally started my journey of proper drawing with drawing my hands when I was bored at school.
One thing lead to another I started drawing other stuff and Ka-blamo and I can draw from a reference 8 out of 10 times with pretty decent results.

Not bad guesswork. The fiction that me and my artist buddy are building is that it's supposed to be set in an 80's retro future city with a militaristic government. This room is supposed to be a small underground rebel propaganda office that they set up in an old abandoned building. We're also going to be going for a not particularly realistic graphical style, we actually want to have the textures on models be almost pixel-arty in their rendering.
Also I didn't include chairs because I got lazy :[
i guess i made the head that small on purpose so he looks tough and big.

also i had to (obviously :p) exaggerate some of his facial traits, maybe that's why it looks comical?
No it's more like you referenced some wimpy skinny actor or something doing a funny face and then gave him a bucket jaw and big teeth in loose strokes. I'm not sure if comical was the right word but something is just off about it if you ask me

I don't want to work with ink anymore, it's not for me. It's messy and impossible to fix in conventional ways, which results in me being nervous and having shaky hands producing shitty lines. I'll stick to pencils.

Have you considered making it a little more vertical? Ladders, fire escapes, blowing through ceilings/floors and stuff?

I think you need to distance yourself from your drawings and dissect them more objectively. If you can't be happy about your drawings there's no reason to be indiscriminately biased about them and cloud your judgement.
Visualizing stuff is just another thing you have to practice to improve, really
Or you could just smoke some weed. If you can handle the decrease in motor skills, the right strain can make your mind's eye much clearer and easier to control
I used to only be able to draw from reference and what's really helped me with drawing without a reference is using a pen and seeing where it takes me, and just by doing that a shitload I've improved a lot
I can't do anything while stoned. I just feel so drifty and light headed that I usually just end up having to sit perfectly still for like half an hour to an hour. I don't get on very well with weed it seems.

That's exactly how I feel. Just don't throw yourself into an Art course, you'll hate yourself for it. As angry as it makes me, I still love art and I really love coming here to learn and check out other folks work. I'm sure you could look for someone to help you out personally. Someone from the 3D thread took time out of his day to come on Skype, share screens and stuff to help me with learning the basics of 3D Modelling. Facepunch is a great place to learn.

Maybe because that's how long he's working?
Bynine, it doesn't matter how long it takes you, or how good you are, the most important thing is that you enjoy it (rich, coming from me I know) so don't worry about how long it takes other people to learn. If you constantly compare yourself to other people and their traits then you're just going to make yourself feel bad.
Eh?
*Been working.
Like, maybe he's been doing art for 6-7 years and he's worried because he thinks he's not as good as others. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm crap at remember names/posts so I may have totally missed something he's done previously.
Have you considered making it a little more vertical? Ladders, fire escapes, blowing through ceilings/floors and stuff?
We've thought about setting one mapset in the top floor of a building, which you could breach from the stairwell or from the windows, but other than that we want to keep the maps nice and tight.

Well, if you guys do end up making the maps randomly generated as suggested before, perhaps randomly placed skylights could be an option?
i think verticality should definitely be explored. games that always take place in the same vertical space get boring quicker
Like I said, we'll see how it goes. Our project lead has a very clear cut vision for the game, and part of it is just how lightning quick the rounds are. Making the maps bigger may draw the game out longer than he wants, but there may be some wiggle room depending on how things play out in future testing.
I tried to color

Trying to design some flyers to put up in the building at work (it's a campus with loads of startups) and this is an early draft

aye just something to explore which i'm sure you'll do
but just to clarify i don't think it needs to be a trade off between small vs large maps; adding vertical space to the maps could just be as simple as an office with an open stairwell up to it that overlooks another room or, like someone else suggested, a way onto the roof and a skylight (that maybe isn't even big enough to enter through) - it doesn't need to be a case where a map is increased by 100% to accommodate a second floor or whatever
but yeh your game looks fuckin kickass and i told my team all about it and showed them the vids and we're hyped for it. maybe shoot me a pm one day if you want an extra fellow team of young devs to do some testing later down the line
I would probably be a way better artist if I actually focused on drawing for a while but I do so much other shit (game dev, animation, music) that I can't really focus on just developing my art skills so I don't improve very fast
snip wrong thread sorry
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, BUTT, how would I do that..uh...different pressure thingy with my Intuos pad.
I know how to use it within SketchbookPro 6.2.4, but I want to make the lines have differeng pressures throughout. Do I simply have to rely on pen pressure?

I thought that was a setting you have to enable in the individual program

Yeah, depends on the program you're using.
