[QUOTE=Oicani Gonzales;45168719]yo guys, could y'all offer some assistance?
my sister started drawing/painting [I]very[/I] recently, and she's having some trouble with this:
[t]http://a.pomf.se/ipsrjk.jpg[/t]
that lower dark area is particularly troublesome - she's having a lot of issues with shading that properly to give the dragon's head some shape.
i tried giving her advice but i can only do so much, since i don't [I]actually [/I]draw or paint!
could anyone offer some advice for this particular piece? i already annoy her every day telling her to practice anatomy and lighting and perspective and such, but right now she just really wants to finish this piece.
thanks![/QUOTE]
uhhh it looks pretty good already tbh. tell her to move on to another piece. if she did a series of dragons with different colors & stares (for example the red dragon would have an evil stare, etc) it would be pretty nice.

Not sure if that was sarcasm, but

inacio told me his sister is basing it on eragon so yeah.

i didn't know the covers were like that anyway.

Ye, at this point there's not much left she could do to create visual interest from the shading alone. For the sake of it, she could paint some 'face-paint' on the dragon or smoke rising up from the bottom; but MenteR has a point in that better effort could be used in building a set of paintings.
Edit:
On a separate note I just finished my part on a second set of playing cards so yay.

Oh man you have no idea how awesome that helmet-view dual wield one is.
shitty concept art for a live action short Quake adaptation. Proof-of-concept-for-feature style.
Something I'll never get the money to do :c

Lighting help with that is a bit tricky since we don't know what the overall shape is. It's kind of a blessing too because you could just fudge it and it'd look fine (as it is it looks quite nice if not really correct or impactful but if she just started recently eh). As best I can tell from the light source, the bottom section of scale should be better lit, with a harder shadow. Right now all of the shadows look like occlusion rather than primary shadows directly cast by forms with the light source behind them. but if you don't want to rework it a lot you could probably give it a finished look by just adding a highlight to the scales. The piece looks flat because the shadow and light play is very flat, but if you added a row of little glinting whitish accents probably horizontally along the middle section it would give the impression of form more successfully. Aside from what you asked the eye is the main issue imo, it doesn't look like it's nested into the skull, it just looks like a fridge magnet on some scales. Eyeballs are spherical so they have to occupy a space that will accommodate them, also they react to light like a reflective sphere rather than the ronnie random lights and darks she's put in there. I'd do a paintover but I can't be bothered :v:
Anyway tell her not to reference the covers from that shitty book series, those illustrations are pillow shaded and generally amateurish. You cultivate bad habits looking at pictures like that

doodle made into a little piece. it's kinda weak but i like the idea i had. it's a knight seeking wisdom from a dragon.
[IMG]https://31.media.tumblr.com/4d123fce242177ca1d28ceb90d9a524d/tumblr_n7jsha5ocf1snm6fco1_1280.png[/IMG]
i wanted to color it but really couldn't think of a palette so i just added a layer of cyan. i like how pacific/calm/serene it ended up looking.

I think the pose is a bit ambiguous. While visually it's definitely got a strong aesthetic (excepting the white fuzzy 'reflections' in the water which I find a bit weak)-- if you can't get the message of a work of this nature across without explaining it, I think you should really keep brainstorming ways to convey "seeking wisdom" unspoken and try again, even if you only change the form of the knight up a bit.
I understand that's probably pretty tough to do but I think would be worth a little more time.

honestly i didn't know what i was doing. i didn't really put any effort on this piece and it feels more like a doodle. i just painted for half an hour and gave it this theme when i was close to "completing" it.
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
but thanks a lot for your criticism, i will try to use this piece as a study and work on something more elaborate.
oh and the white fuzzy things are will-o-wisps, not reflections :v:

i gave the knight a more respectful pose towards the dragon and further developed the scene as a whole. pretty pleased with how it looks imo.
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
it's 5 am jeez.
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
i should give the dragon more specularity, probably define his feet more too, but i'm done with this for today. also add some vegetation to the side.
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
actually fuck it i'm done with this one. i'll move on to something more interesting involving dragons tomorrow (today actually), so nite guys.

the composition itself looks nice and I like where you're going with it, but the textures in the background are really taking away from it as a whole. they shouldn't have that much contrast at that distance, so the dragon falls flat and a lot of the depth you're trying to express within the work is lost.
Just to point out: MenteR, you drew a Wyvern, not a dragon. Dragons have arms as well as wings.
Oh god you big nerd
How can you tell it has no arms, it's a silhouette??
[editline]23rd June 2014[/editline]
It could have them crossed
[editline]23rd June 2014[/editline]
btw now that I can see it Menter it's quite nice, I agree with Catghost though
sorry, i think i worked so much on the piece i ended up losing my edge. i agree that it looks kind of flat.
i will work on something a lot more interesting today however (or at least i hope it comes off as interesting).
[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
also i can't believe the arms aren't showing up as arms. this really is a bummer. :|
No no no I can see the arms, the thing is the arms are the wings. Unlees I'm seeing this wrong
[QUOTE=red_pharoah;45184336]No no no I can see the arms, the thing is the arms are the wings. Unlees I'm seeing this wrong[/QUOTE]
no, he was supposed to have arms. on the first piece i made of this theme you could see the arms, i accidentally occluded them in my "final" piece.
been working on this but i'll stop because i'm going to make more dragons later today:
[img]http://puu.sh/9FmBj/522da3eb3d.jpg[/img]
i need to stop doing b&w and go back to color.
