It's free education for which you don't have to leave your chair, how can you bitch about that No more so than say reading your emails or posts on a forum or facebook or or or ... Cumbersome? You want a physical book instead of a cumbersome digital pdf file? Are you an idiot? It is if you use a laptop. If not, I know we all want to read our Loomis out and about but you have to make SOME allowances when things are free And what? Just buy the fucking thing
Mako, sorry to say. But don't waste your energy on him. To me it just sounds like he's making a bunch of excuses rather than to do the work.
Well..all i can say is that "Drive" have a nice warm orange lighting in this scene, while yours is just yellow.
I meant drive generally, not the movie :v: [editline]24th June 2014[/editline]
Mako, sorry to say. I just drew a basic Loomis's head with Sailor Uniform. Should I put manga eyes on it?
Printing yourself is going to be the cheapest option you've got. A pack of white paper isn't that expensive, and just set the printer to black and white so it won't waste colour ink and your good to go. Or you can just keep making excuses to do nothing.
I'm not making excuses to do nothing, I did say at the end I was thinking of giving it a go. I always weigh things up and I'm always open to other peoples ideas and opinions. [editline]24th June 2014[/editline] Sorry for coming across as so arrogant and lazy. I would see about printing it this minute buy my sister isn't around. I know it sounds stupid complaining about a free book but I really hate reading eBooks of a screen. It's difficult to explain. Sure it's easy enough reading forum posts and such but there's just something I prefer about having a book in my hand - even if it is poorly bound. I've printed off eBooks in the past so it's not like it's an option I've wholly disregarded. [editline]24th June 2014[/editline] I need to stop digging..
I want to buy a Cintiq, is it a good switch? Anyone using Cintiq here? I'm on a Intuos3 6x8 right now. I still find result better if I draw on paper first, so I don't know if it is the way I can look at whatever I am drawing or just that traditional medium can produce better texture.
have you thought about a surface pro maybe? [editline]24th June 2014[/editline] i know what you mean though, when you're so comfortable with drawing w/ graphite/etc and you switch over to digital and it's just...you expect it to feel similar, b/c you feel like you draw well on paper, but it just feels kind of clunky and it just feels like any talent you had on paper is now gone and you're back to square one

So it's unlikely to be much more reading than you would do browsing a forum, by any means. If it's just general improvement then Fun with a Pencil is the logical choice, followed by whatever you feel you're after at the end of your studies with that. I haven't read it but Loomis is very highly regarded, I doubt you'll get any hack material [editline]25th June 2014[/editline]
more concept art for midorea
You have a lovely aesthetic happening with all of these pictures I may have said this before at some point but you should study light, a decent understanding would make the quality of your work in the viewer's eye skyrocket
Can you get a good stylus for a Surface Pro? I've never looked into it. I'm not hundred percent sure if it's Jonas De Ro or not but one of the many artists I follow uses a Samsung Galaxy tablet for sketching on the go, he came out with some really nice results too. Although a Surface would be much better because of having access to all your normal software. [editline]24th June 2014[/editline]
..Well what do you want to learn? I'll make sure to get my hands on 'Fun with a pencil' Figure Drawing is definitely one to get but I thought I'd just check with you guys first to see if you had any knowledge of them. Thanks for the help.
i hear the pen nibs wear out easily, but the SP3 is supposed to pretty good for writing/drawing. they ditched the wacom pen/digitizer for this one by n-trig, it has like 1 ms latency and near-zero parallax. i've played with one before, it's pretty damn good for what it is if you can live without the pen tilt support you can get on a cintiq [editline]24th June 2014[/editline] nobody really uses pen tilt anyway unless you're using something that's trying to simulate traditional media (e.g. artrage, corel painter, etc)

Alright, just asking.
What is this. American Amazon has animated product images. Also, thanks - I had it dead set in my mind that loomis was the way to go, I'll definitely check this out.
No one thinks this is traced? *Or is the color version yours as well?
Both pieces are mine, i started with pencil in my sketchbook and it cannot be traced from an actual image because this is a complete redesign of the selkie character; she is done more realistically with an original pose and costume changes. This is what an actual Selkie looks like: And just as more proof I also design my own characters without references so that you know I'm not tracing:
Quick color and lighting test Aiming for traditional medium kind of feeling.

In terms of your difficulty in finding work as a concept artist you have to remember that's a really high spec job and generally the employment numbers for something like a character artist in the industry are only in the thousands.
Maya I love your work <3

As for getting hired for character design, I'm not really shooting for that kind of position. I don't really care what job it is, just anything. Due to the fact that I have a lot of experience working in a small 7 man studio, I had to wear many hats so I have developed many skills I can do decently; 3D, 2D, animation, character concepting, terrain concepting, and GUI design. I even know a bit of C++. Unfortunately it seems that the reason I cant get a job is because I know too much about everything that goes into game development and am not focusing enough in just one thing. And yes I am aware how hard concepting is to get into because there are limited positions. I'll probably have to focus in 3D asset design if I focus in anything; which I wouldn't mind, I like it all. Just kinda sucks that all these years of working in the indie game industry can't get me a job whereas all the programmers that worked in the same studio got hired almost immediately.

You don't have to stick in the area in which you are confident. Just adapt to open positions, at least that is my take on career in general.
I said that because no damn company will hire me for concept design
let's see your portfolio then? cos right now although you're obviously great at drawing there's nothing you've shown here that says you're hireable for a studio position. it's all stuff that looks like final fantasy fan art or something. if it's not fan art and they're original designs then that's more impressive but it still looks like stuff from any old japanese anime-inspired game and japanese studios are notoriously closed to hiring especially to outsiders and especially to outsiders who don't speak japanese if your problem is "i'm too much of a jack of all trades" then you should be looking at smaller studios where something like that would be beneficial. small indie devs would be way happier to take an artist who also has engine capabilities, animation, coding, etc, than just some bloke who is sick at painting pretty pictures and if you don't want to work at a small studio then you need to specialise and work hard. find the time. working 9-5 is killer but it allows for more than enough time to learn, practice, experiment, and put together a really solid portfolio in a specialised subject field in as little as 6 months
I'm curious, for those of you who use tablets / draw digitally, what program do you use and/or would recommend?
I'm curious, for those of you who use tablets / draw digitally, what program do you use and/or would recommend?
Either Photoshop or Artrage. Personally I like Artrage more, mostly because it feels more like you're drawing on pen and paper.

I'm pretty certain its a 'jack of all trades' problem. But the biggest issue with working at indie studios is most of them offer very little pay or in most cases no pay at all. I've been there done that and though it was fun, I really need to start earning money as school loans are breathing down my neck. Anyway here is something that could sum up more accurately what I can do. This is one of 4 released indie-titles I worked on; I was in charge of all the art in this game including animations: Then after that game, They liked my work so much that they had me take on the creative director position for this game: I did all the models and textures which were given to an animator who animated the scenes. We made an early working prototype then I unfortunately had to leave them due to trouble affording gas and my bills; which was a shame because I really felt this game had potential.
I'm curious, for those of you who use tablets / draw digitally, what program do you use and/or would recommend?
I'm personally most fond of using Paint Tool Sai, its easy to get a hold of and has a nice mix of clean lines and brushes you can use for more painterly work as well I also liked ArtRage when I used it for a bit, nice for simulating traditional and I had fun doing some paintings with it, but it was basically no good for the cleaner line stuff I spend most of my time doing
