are you... are you drawing in flash??
One of my coursemates insisted that despite being primarily focused on animation and such that it was really good for drawing once you got used to it.
Pretty sure he hasn't touched it since using SAI but he drilled into me not to underestimate flash.
Well yeah.. My Pc cant run Photoshop
Yeah, you really should look at PaintTool SAI, it's quite barebones but it's got some really nice features and is great for illustrative purposes - very much suited to your style.

Damn you.
did some small paintings yesterday, just to fix some of the things I've been doing wrong in rendering

leaving Castle in the Sky on in the background for dayyyyyssss
TaiwanesePrick i was gonna reply to you in your thread but got distracted.
i had to work with cardboard on a number of projects when i was at ~art school~ and i learned a lot of techniques to get nice craftsmanship. for example when joining two pieces of cardboard, rather than just glue them together, you should measure the thickness of the cardboard and on one of the pieces cut out the inside layer of paper and the corrugation along the edge where the two pieces will join. the outside (visible) layer on that piece will then have a paper flap the thickness of the cardboard. then you can lay down your hot glue on the inside of the flap and merge the two pieces to be nearly seamless. this also works well for extending pieces, capping cylinders, etc.
i can make an example when i get home tonight if this was confusing.

E: two more color studies. I stopped sketching the scenes before drawing and instead just laying colors down right away, it's a good step for me.

To answer questions I recieved from the previous bunchs, these are actually sprites for a game project currently on hold. (I'm not very optimistic about how that hold will turn out. we'll see)
And something completely unrelated for those who are tired of my pixel weapons :

I'm probably going to be pursuing some sort of digital career. I'm not so skilled in the realms of illustration.

I hope it's getting better now.
More CC welcome! :)

I gone an done the graphics for this Subaru world record vid.
I did the 3d map(1:47) and graphical representation of the sensor data (last half of the vid).
Map looks very cool, good job!
Is it bad that I can draw better with a mouse than a pencil? I've spent so much time mindlessly doodling with a mouse that I can get better, more detailed results with it than any pencil or pen I've picked up.
I'm trying to get serious about drawing now that I'm heading to an art school come September but I just don't really know where to start with this sort of thing considering all the details that go into it. I also kinda feel embarrassed to ask around here considering how it seems like most of the people posting in this thread seem to have it all figured out :v:
Sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask this in, I wasn't sure where to put it.

It probably only feels that way. If you were to try and trace something with a pencil I'm sure you could do it almost exactly, no problems. If that's the case then you don't lack any ability to control the pencil.
Probably depends on what I'm tracing. I doubt I'll be able to pull off tracing something like a person with the amount of skill I've got now.
I'll try and think more basic. Maybe trace inanimate objects with basic shapes. My perspective is horrible anyway, it could do with improvement.
Eyes are going to fall off drawing the tails, but I'm finished:

Time for bed...
A bit messy, overexposed and oversaturated in some parts, too much color going on all over the place, and since you rendered everything the same it's all rather flat. You're way too concerned with making "finished pieces" and you're not taking enough time practicing along the way.
Also more of these. I think I'm done with emperor's new groove, gotta find something else to obsess over now

Cross post from the makers subforum, but I made the picture frame for my metallic fractal print.
Inside this frame will go a nice white mat board and a metallic print that I rendered from a section of the mandelbrot set with a colour scheme sort of similar to the colours I used in the frame.

Castle in the Sky is such a great film you should all watch it.

Don't trace things, just draw them.
And yes it's bad that you can draw better with a mouse, as a technique it's not valid at all in the practical sense. You mentioned details, details really aren't anything to worry about. If you want good basic drawing ability, learn measuring and then furiously draw objects from life. September is a long way away, fill up a sketchbook (or two or three, depends on how busy you are and how serious you are about it). Don't draw small. Probably get an A4 book, in my experience A3 is a bit intimidating for a beginner and anything smaller than A4 will encourage you to draw tiny things which isn't what you want. Do one or two things per page, not ten. Draw construction of your subject faintly, then strengthen the correct line when you can pick it out. Don't grip the pencil too tightly or too close to the tip. When starting out don't bother trying to put shadows or textures or anything onto your subjects, just focus on getting the proportions of the object from your POV accurately. You're better off spending an hour getting the outline and ellipses and tapering and whatever else correct and having a bare wireframe drawing than spending the same amount of time trying to shade your sketch to make it look more like the object and so on with a wonky result. NO fiddly details.
Also you could practice drawing lines (probably not in a sketchbook, on shitty printer paper or something). Lines from end to end of the page, as straight as you can, locked elbow and wrist, at a smooth steady speed. Targeted lines and curves are good too, just keep it to one motion, don't sketch them in. Ghost your strokes before you put pencil to paper. These things are tedious and difficult but they'll improve your manual dexterity.
Post your best attempts and/or the things that went horribly wrong or were confusing, and we can probably tell you what's gone wrong and why.

It's lovely but the light is poorly defined, it looks like you just rendered each element separately and guessed where the shadows and highlights should go each time. For example her neck, trapezius and collarbone are all in a deep shadow, as though the light source is right above her head, but her face looks like it's just getting side light. In contrast to both of these, her leg is barely getting any shadow at all and it looks like the light should be pretty much entirely blocked from her calf. Her arms have practically no shadows. Her arm and face look like they're on the same plane, but her neck is pushed waaay back spatially, giving her a bizarre floating head. Lilyo is right, if you studied some basic stuff and applied it rather than finishing the shit out of your pieces to get a nice result, your style would progress, your results would improve and your painting time would be reduced
So I made the decision at the end of last semester to drop out of PreMed and instead pursue digital art, having finally been exposed to wonders of Photoshop and Flash. I have to say it's been the best decision of my life. I took several advanced art courses in high school so I have a pretty solid foundation for pursuing higher levels of detail and complexity, and I'm really looking forward to having ALL of my classes being focused on my art. :In general I'm really excited for my future in the art industry and I just wanted to share my excitement with you guys, as you'll probably see more of me around these parts from now on.
Anyways, some content (thumbed because huge):
[t]http://i.imgur.com/Txzyprj.jpg[/t]
I've mostly been making very abstract pieces, playing around with various tools in Photoshop and getting acquainted with them. I'll probably pick up drawing again and doing actual technical stuff later this summer.
I wouldn't get too thrilled about your "future in the art industry" juuuust yet
[editline]29th June 2014[/editline]
Perhaps getting acquainted with a pencil would be a better starting point
The various tools in photoshop might be better avoided entirely in fact :v:
@Mako & Lilyo,
Thank you for the C & C
There are quite a few things I really need to work on, haha.
I will be doing DoF studies and color comp studies.
lighting-wise, yeah I think I am focusing on individual parks rather than the picture in general.
I have some idea for DoF study, but is there any recommendation for color comp study?
Copying an image is one thing, but painting without refernece is another thing... :(
Other than the peacock tail, I didn't use any refernece, so I was totally playing around with color.
Well, you could look at a painting or photograph for mood reference, discern a palette from that and apply it to a drawing of your own?
I can't give you a great answer because I'm still learning colour use, but I've been painting a few objects from life straight into my sketchbook (surprisingly enjoyable), and I'm going to try to find the time for some thumbnail-sized master copies in colour to go with that. After a while I'll attempt what I suggested above too.
first bit of pixel art. Some very small guns!
