@JF
The first thing that jumps out at me from that piece is the bird, if that's what it is? Looking at where the road ends (parallel to where it's perched) in relation to the buildings and car etc just a bit down the street, the bird must be MASSIVE. Either that or everything else is miniscule
If you did mean to make him enormous then there are a couple of issues. The linework and values on him are far sharper than what he's on top of, making him look like he's on a far closer plane (as though you drew him as if he was the size of a normal bird in the extreme foreground)
Plus the weight on that wire (?) looks like nothing much, whereas if there was a steampunk part-mechanical bird of that size it would cause much more torsion
Otherwise your light source work is a tad weak, a few of the buildings are very ambiguously lit and/or almost pillow-shaded. Those pipes above the 58 bug me because it looks like you changed the light source a little bit so that the shadows they cast wouldn't close off that triangular gap of light under each of them, since otherwise they'd look a bit unresolved and crappy. Something like that you should plan when you're constructing initially with light source in mind, since how things are lit is the most important thing in any representational piece really.
I don't think I've seen any life drawings of yours? Regardless for improvement's sake I recommend you venture towards shading with line more (that may be what you've done in that piece it's hard to tell since it's fairly small and a bit blurry)
Perhaps some figure studies? Focusing on creating high contrasts would be good for you as well I think
Also every piece you do seems maybe overly defined without a lot of substance. Think about impressionism, how you can sit a building in your landscape without carefully drawing in every window and so forth. Watercolour pieces would make good inspiration for some style experiments, imagine stuff like that in monochrome to adapt it to graphite
Also do things you find challenging, if you think you'd have trouble doing a full portrait in pencil then do one. You might be surprised at the result, plus anything you pick up from ground you haven't really covered before will undoubtedly add to your ability in things you're comfortable with already.
Hey I have a chance to possibly get a 12" cintiq for $500 New Zealand - worth it?
If it was me I would disregard how much it usually costs and just consider how much good it would do me art-wise. I don't think I would get one myself unless it was like under $200, since there's nothing wrong with the gear I have right now, just stuff wrong with my knowledge/technique etc.
Of course you might be able to resell that for some extra cash? So there's that to take into account if you don't mind the hassle

Brand new they're like 1500 so it's a pretty sweet deal haha
I won't get it because I can't really spare the money, but I"m gonna save so next time a deal like that comes around I can nab it. It would make digital line drawing so much easier
He didn't specify the exact model, but there's a used Cintiq 12WX on Amnazon for $700, refurb $615, new for $850, and the newer 13" is only 1000.

Yup it was a 12wx

I'm talkin NZ stores and prices though
It's still only $200NZD less.
I'm looking at NZ based stores; I dunno how to amazon or anything like that
? I'm not sure what you're getting at. Amazon makes itself readily available to foreign customers and I'm sure it accepts NZD for USD purchases.
Oh I see
All those cheap ones on Amazon are from US based companies that only offer domestic shipping though; the 1k+ sales are the ones that will ship internationally
move to murica #1 country
edit: Really though, that's a shame. I looked for international shipping and could barely find a cintiq to begin with. y u do htis amazorn
this fucking sucks, i was planning on spending the entire bank holiday just working in ps, woke up yesterday morning in utter agony.
Fucking gout.
so painful i cant focus on pissing straight let alone drawing straight. :(
Have you tried non radiant lighting? It looks very out of place against the pixel grid tiles imo. Pretty cool otherwise, are you going to code it yourself and everything?
Don't tell anyone but it's actually running inside the engine and is just a screenshot with a black border around it.
Regarding how i pick my palletes, i just pick random colors. :P
That's a pretty good deal, but for someone like you I'm tempted to say save up for a 22 or 24
i don't quite understand the "someone like you" (good at painting? serious about painting?) having a correlation with a bigger tablet. i know lots of professionals who hate bigger tablets, especially if they navigate their pc with the tablet as well as paint with it, because it requires much more arm movement and can create shoulder strain (which is a big issue if you paint all day for a living)
Sorry, but I naturally assume that a more expensive product is a better product, and I figure that someone who is good at painting, serious about painting, and spends a lot of time painting would naturally want the more expensive, and therefore presumably better, tablet.
But hey, if you want the 12 or the thirteen what do I know, go for it, I'm certainly not the expert.
aye that is generally true, especially when you're comparing, say, a bamboo to an intuous, but when it comes down to size and/or cintiq vs intuous then a lot of it is personal choice usually
i know lots of professionals who hate bigger tablets, especially if they navigate their pc with the tablet as well as paint with it
This. I don't mean that I'm even close to be a professional, but I still use by bamboo just because I feel uncomfortabe with all these huge tablets. I like to draw while lounging on the chair with the tablet on my knees (yeah, I know, horribly wrong position, but who cares), and all these huge desks like intuos are really too huge to draw this way.
But mostly it's a matter of habbit, I guess.
The A4 sized Intous is perfect to have on your lap and draw. It's big enough to allow you to use the whole arm but small enough to carry with you and use wherever you please.

c&c welcome.
it's a generic gun, there's nothing particularly interesting about it.

Deep in my soul I know you're right, and intuos is definitely better then my old overused bamboo. But as I said it's just a matter of habbit. It's like your old cozy sweater. It may be not very fancy and all that stuff, but it's handy, and you're used to it so much.
May be one day, when my current tablet will break, I'll buy some better one. But not now.
Kinda nifty, but the stock looks horribly clunky and uncomfortable to use.
Large tablets are not getting much love so I wanna say I love my large intuos. It's big and takes up too much space on my desk and I can't take it places easily (the latter thing is the worst part) BUT I tend to have shakey lines and the big drawing surface gives me so much more control and confidence, especially doing linework. It's my baby.
Anyway obviously different people value different things in a tablet, just wanted to provide the other side :)
I have a huge monoprice and a small, cheap bamboo for travel. It's the perfect combination

I started drawing a bust for fun, and somehow I think it ended looking a bit like Ryan Gosling.
I'll finish it later. Definitely need to fix those eyes and that nose a little.
nice but the different eye height is bugging me.
nice but the different eye height is bugging me.
Yeah, the eye's really bothering me too. Probably shoulda used a reference for that.
Also I think the nose a little bit too far to the right.
Does anybody know any good techniques for hair? I am having the most difficult time with it. Hair in general is welcomed but if there is anything afro related as well I'd love to see it, since the piece I'm working on requires it.

almost forgot to mention I'm working on Photoshop.

looking again, ive noticed a few other things as well.
the pupil in your eyes is dead center, at that angel it would be off slightly as its receded into the eye slightly. the mouthline doesnt follow the contour of the face and the eye bag lines (technical words :v:) are far too low making his cheeks sag.
my 2¢

for afro hair id stick a gentle scatter jitter on a round brush,

Wow. Ten seconds in and it looks so much better than what I was doing. Thanks, man.
