Cylinder is off 10/10 doing something boring to improve though
I haven't drawn since I was a kid, maybe 12 or 13 years old (I'm 28 now). But I always loved drawing so much, and I REALLY loved charcoal. So recently I've been chatting with someone online and we agreed to both try and draw something as a sort-of competition... Not really, but it was a good excuse for the both of us to take up drawing again haha. Anyway, last night I literally just put pencil to paper and started drawing, it began as a couple of geometric shapes, turned into a steampunk airship, then morphed into a mountain base... it was crazy haha. This was the final result, literally my first drawing in like 15 years mind you, and totally not finished; [t]http://i4.minus.com/iYqoDxDmXQhHH.jpg[/t] I love shadows and perspective, but it's so hard to get anything right. Wish I'd never stopped drawing :( So much fun just getting lost with a drawing pad and pencils all night. What do you guys think? I know I got the perspectives wrong on a few things (the big pipes on the side of the mountain and the angles on the building faces etc etc).
I just saw this on tumblr, and I don't even follow anyone from fp :v:
Well you do now
Yeah it was just funny. I wasn't really exaggerating, he would give times like 10 or 20 seconds :v:
He would also be like, hey, I took your image and changed all the colors, I know it's way better now don't worry about thanking me.
Oh yeah, he'd turn them all into his swamp palette hahaha
You're right. I just wanted to add some fancy things like this scanner of meaningless holo near his head to diversify the image somehow. The original idea was that drones like this one sneak into buildings\whatever and mark targets, and this dude just shoots them through walls and covers and anything with his fancy gun.
I'd love to see a painting done in context, maybe with on of the scanners peeking through a window with the city in the background - night time of course. Or maybe a corridor shootout with a drone or two flying about, maybe one string destroyed. [editline]6th September 2014[/editline] This is basically a request.

If you focus only on the eyes it seems like the nose and mouth features are twisted too far on her left side. That aside, I really envy your skin painting skills. It felt like it had the implied implications and added some interesting lighting to the overall picture. When I saw the scanner it immediately told me the setting and world the guy was in without needing a heavily detailed background.
Making an after effects puppet for homework. Thurned on all the face layers. [t]http://puu.sh/bokcU/f128ba5f16.jpg[/t] jesus fucking christ

This is a sci fi santa? I thought it was a musketeer.
I think you should try working with more angular shapes because you're trying to do some weird things with wrapping the eyes around the head and stuff like that. The face looks very distorted.
Noted, I'll try doing a portrait all in planes. Head construction is shit hard honestly, I'm really beginning to think that to use the Loomis method or other you really need to be at a point where you're good enough that you don't need it. I've just started properly with it really so my opinion might change, but it doesn't seem to hold up by itself, you can follow it to the letter and get really fucked results. Need lots of extra knowledge and instinct and experience in tandem with it. I also find that I lose objectivity extremely quickly when drawing faces, to where flipping the canvas doesn't make much difference, standing back doesn't make much difference etc. so that I won't see if something is distorted or not.
Well that's more of a problem to do with not having enough experience drawing from observation. If you look at your drawing and can't see anything wrong with you obviously just need to keep working from reference before trying to do your own stuff. Proko has some great tutorials, in fact probably some of the best I've ever seen regarding figure and portrait drawing http://www.proko.com/
Grey. Grey with lines, straight and perpendicular pockmarked like the surface of the moon. Lichens, clinging to find purchase on the deeply cratered surface, cast in sharp relief by the light by which I write. Grey. Grey like faded memories and full of static like old television, separated by lines into so many similar, but unique panes. Panes like glimpses into so many isolated souls, so alike but never knowing because of the walls that bind them to their ways.
Well that's more of a problem to do with not having enough experience drawing from observation.
Aye I said as much
If you look at your drawing and can't see anything wrong with you you obviously just need to keep working from reference before trying to do your own stuff.
I am, and I will :v: have to make some up along the way though to see whether I'm learning anything or not. And as I said not being able to see distortion is due to loss of objectivity, having done it from scratch. I may just work on two at once, flick from one to the other on a timer to try to keep an objective eye. Been doing characters for way too long, got bored by the time I finished the face so I just sorta filled in the body.
Considering she's a special elite pilot or whatever they did a very shitty job of bandaging her eye
She's the other rype of special, as in "my mom says I'm special" special
i remember when i used to give my character super special descriptors then i realised how lazy that kind of writing was.

He's been trying to make a game for years I think
Would anyone be interested if I restarted a new Redline/Visual Critique thread (http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1271904) without just me doing it by myself? Hopefully enough people are willing to post work.
