I think Lilyo is gonna scream at me... but I took some of the styles and put it on the piece. I'm now done with the piece... I swear! I'll start doing studies...!!
I'm doing drawing for my own pleasure, I'm a sales engineer D:
Wouldn't it be nice to improve anyway? You've been painting for years I don't think it's a throwaway hobby
I've been playing around with drawing on my own, just trying different styles of my own..
But all of your pictures are the same A good looking woman in a precise 3/4 view with the one vacant expression and an awkward comp, with the same overworked under-studied painting style :v:
i'm pretty sure your art lvl is determined by how many self portraits you've done
Made a background for myself 'cause I was bored.
i'm pretty sure your art lvl is determined by how many self portraits you've done
Dunno why you'd do such a similar piece right away but it's much better anyway, I really like it. One concern is your nose and how it relates to your mouth there: [editline]9th October 2014[/editline] Also the hand is a little bit overpowering and bulky, I'd consider slimming it or cropping a touch. It would be a shame to lose any of the bottom left corner though, you've eased off nicely there.

Painting self-portraits can be enlightening.
Can this god damn DretFosria dude stop dumbing, lating, and disagreeing every post? How is Lilyo's self portrait dumb in any sense?
He has six posts and is clearly a fool who cares :v:
He's the real artists here E: Also started working on another assignment last night but i already don't like it
Light & shadows still life project at high school, this is the first time using white chalk on black construction paper I know everything is wobbly but I tried
I decided to try doing my own self-portrait! Advice would be great, I don't work with brushes a lot

But keep at it!
i would suggest getting a reference for the gun
But he does have a point, I still think you have a rather crudely developed way of coloring and shading. It seems very high schoolerish, idk. It's fine to have a stylized way of doing things but you should probably be doing it on purpose which I don't think you are, it's just your default right now. Your drawings are just so nice and then they fall apart when you try to move to shading which is a shame. I would experiment with different things first, AND DO STUDIES god damn it. Take some nice paintings you like and look what other people are doing with textures and colors. I don't think I've ever seen you post some nice color studies or just studies in general, I think you care too much about the idea of a finished piece rather than the process to get there (idk if you're doing this for someone or just for yourself but you still need to spend more time on the process rather than the whole piece). I can't recommend specific people to look at since I mostly follow environmental artists but [t]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gXQpXb2JRrc/T9CP4-JRUlI/AAAAAAAALKM/pncwYBskPBo/s1600/Sargent.henry-james_sm.jpg[/t] [t]http://static.squarespace.com/static/53ef08c8e4b015b9c369bddd/t/54268e26e4b007ffd6b67eee/1411812904878/?format=1000w[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/l7dK3SG.jpg[/t] [t]https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t31.0-8/10655238_1519255541643480_5401595693097783743_o.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/oRS2zhf.jpg[/t] [t]https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t31.0-8/q86/s960x960/10498065_10203419464361605_5221889324220689208_o.jpg[/t]
I just did one of them. Took me 1.5 hrs. (not traced)
We all know you're capable of creating the line work, so I doubt anyone would suspect you of tracing. On the other hand, it's a marked improvement on your colors and maybe values as well- did you use the color picker tool on the reference? In a way IIRC that's basically tracing for color/value.
If you like that painting in particular here's the artist's page, he's quite good with color http://vialjarhorn.tumblr.com/
Seen as the above topic is colour, will my mild colour blindness have an impact on my future? The course I applied to in Edinburgh (and got accepted) had a note that colour blind people were not allowed on the course. I went to a different Uni in Glasgow but I haven't told anyone bar friends on the course that I do actually suffer from mild colour blindness. I'm studying Computer Games (Art & Animation)

The most important thing is that if you're doing some serious, important work, especially related to skin tones/nature that you have someone give it a quick look-over before you submit. I'm Red/Green color deficient and when I'm editing senior photos I have a friend look over them before I export just to make sure I haven't accidentally tinted anything too green or red.
worked on it a bit more, should be done in a couple of hours [t]http://i.imgur.com/WsjIHCQ.jpg[/t]

Then I found out I was red/green deficient and the art teacher was like "Oh, I just thought you really liked green or something.." That was not after my dad came to a parents evening and was like "Why the fuck are all his paintings got. Right vivid green on them? You know he's colourblind right?" Is their anything I can do myself that can help with it or will I just have to get work checked over? [editline]10th October 2014[/editline] Also one time at home my mum asked me to pass her one of the blue plastic cups and for years I had thought they were just colourless plastic, I was so confused. I don't know why I can't see that though if it's a green/red deficiency I have.
You can get tested for what specific colors you're deficient in, but the most common is red-green. In my life, just remaining aware of the condition is most helpful, so I can be mindful when I realize I'm in situations where I'm dealing with certain colors and take precautions accordingly. Just pulled this off of Google, but you can give this a shot and see if it gives you a rough idea. http://enchroma.com/test/instructions/

[editline]10th October 2014[/editline] I am not too far off am I, or did I just prove myself to be color-blinded. since the topic just shifted to color-blindness...
So apparently it's Strong Deutan.. [t]http://puu.sh/c6GiS/ea563fb31b.png[/t] I knew it was red-green but this suggests it's strong rather than mild like the Optician told me.
Sounds like you're a wrestler
