Speaking about doing commissions, is there a good source of info about doing that sort of stuff? All I've found is basically "don't undervalue your work" but I can't understand how people can pay so much money for commissions.
Yeah honestly just do some work and post it on reddit or some fan forums and you'll get lots of people interested in prints or more work

It's a pretty intimidating world to approach, on the one hand if you're actually in (properly commercially in) any part of "the industry" the money you make is probably far far above what you would dream of charging somebody. You're not that brilliant after all, you're trying your best to make nice paintings on your tablet in your bedroom. You don't want to charge a client per hour because you're slow and still feel inexperienced - it's probably daunting to even refer to them as a client, because of all the real world responsibility that carries. So you advertise a lump sum, and you don't want to make it very high cause who's going to commission you? the problem is there are a lot of people out there doing commissions like this cheaply (and they're pretty much scum in the art industry, even if they don't realise, because offering this kind of specialised creative work for fuck all payment erodes the whole system and brings standards down globally) and you're competing with them. To survive you either have to charge poorly as well, or simply be better to the point where it's very apparent and you can charge higher. but the thing is nobody who is good enough to do that will be working on commissions alone - the really good artists who just work digitally have other gigs, without fail. If you're a fine artist you can paint personal work and try to sell it, do the gallery/exhib thing as well as working on commission, but if you only work digital? If you're an established artist working traditionally you can sell originals for serious money, but you can only sell prints of digital work. No one's going to collect you. So you must have a job, concept artists have concept art jobs for art directors and producers who hopefully know art and have a budget. People who don't know art, people who might commission you on fp or DA or randomly from wherever you advertise, they probably will be unwilling or unable to pay you properly for a piece - unless they happen to be loaded, and your reputation/popularity will increase the chances of that. But for someone like mal who may not have good networking or hundreds of thousands of profile views or a lot of experience with serious companies, he can't charge properly and expect work. It's about the long game. I don't know a good source of info (other than people) for this shit, and I'm not a comprehensive source because I don't have experience either but based on what I've learned my advice is: either you (you being any digital artist out in the cold without contacts or serious skills) can do your commission thing part time, charge scumbag rates if you must, but also get a boring unskilled real job so that you can pay rent and eat and that. Option B is dropping all the ballast from your life that you can possibly live without, working your ass off to get the heavy hitting skillset you need and doing all of those things chesty said to set yourself up to be hired. Also helpful is doing fan art or other derivative work like that which might end up with 500k hits on tumblr etc.
if you think about paying $65 for a commission and it seems like a lot out of your wallet that's understandable, but like chesty said it's gonna work out to be less than minimum wage. Much less depending on where you live. A friend of mine who isn't quite as skilled as I am (wank wank wank this is just for the sake of perspective) earns about $400 in a day working freelance - she has connections and experience that I don't have. But it's encouraging. Real established artists doing concept art or matte painting for big studios could be earning anything from $5000-$8000 a week, or $2000 a painting, something like that. If you're at that level you can then ease down several gears between jobs and do commissions at what seem like wow prices to the likes of us because you're high profile. I guess the point is that afaik nobody makes their money by starting with and only doing commissions online. sorry for the great balls of text, hope that's helpful in some way
Sell out to the furry community. Furries will pay exorbitant amounts of money for even just a sketch, seemingly irrelevant of skill level.
Thanks for the advice guys, I don't have time to read it all in depth at the mo, but I will!
Currently this is just me dipping my feet in the water. I know for a fact I don't want to do concept art as a long-term full-time job, but a bit on the side would be great.

I selected the dragon and then inverted the selection, so they were just included.
It's not a picture of me anyway. I just prefer to protect identities as much as I can.

I made a thing.
Meant to be some form of perspective / close-up compared to the background. I made the scenery as a second thought, and I'm not too good at perspective yet.

As a part of my costume project (and for practice) I started doing a generic dagger that I would eventually make a mold out of and cast in resin. Never done any of that stuff so I expect many failures. :D The pieces here are made out of super sculpy firm.
I've been buying a lot of tools and stuff lately, tools are awesome. It's like christmas every time you buy a new tool. :v:

I drew a poster type thing and designed a logo for my friend 'DJ Spin'
I've been working on human bodies for a while since I never got taught that stuff in school/college and I like how it came out, especially with the perspective.
I'm going to work on the logo a little more, but I'm happy with it so far
u can enhance photos and get the fingerprints don't u know
Those were meant to be farther away compared to the pikachu. Maybe I should have done some sort of blur for the distance objects?
