I did crop it. It's part of a much larger canvas, when I work on it a bit more, I'll post the whole thing.

A fun sketch, practicing faces and drawing my personal view of orcs and the way I see them.
Basically idea of an elf mage and her huge orc bodyguard.[/QUOTE]

Hey guys, I like digital painting but I'm pretty awful at blocking in colours. I usually do a sketch/lineart and put flat colours under it then paint in the details, shading etc. using the lines as a reference. I'm fine doing it this way, I like doing it this way really, it works for me. However I do wanna be more diverse and be able to start painting right from the start without having the flat colours. I know I have a ways to go learning how light and what not works (I feel this is in part my issue) but I'm just curious if any of you guys have tutorials for blocking in colours to paint? I'm really sorry if I haven't explained this very well and you don't understand what the heck Im talking about. I think overall I'm just confused because I used to start on a white canvas then was told thats a really bad idea and with a grey canvas of course with semi-transparent brushes you see the background properly and I dont really get how I'm meant to paint properly so the background cant be seen

Much like this I think, where it looks like Lord M started doing pretty broad shading/strokes then worked on the detail. Again sorry if I explained myself poorly

I think that what you're talking about isn't so much something you should work on specifically, it's more a product of knowing light and colour and so forth. If you put your effort into studying that stuff, your style and process and everything will mutate seemingly by themselves and become better and better. trying to work a process first is more or less approaching the wrong end of the problem, you can try to paint something in broad strokes and then work into details over and over like you think it should be done, but you're gonna be guessing what to do, trial and error until you catch the thread of something that looks okay. You might get slightly better over a long time of doing something like that, but you're better off just learning the theory. I used to have the same problem you describe really bad, I would do a line drawing and then have no fucking idea how to efficiently paint it, how to get rid of the lines, do I paint under them and then turn them off oh god now the picture looks shit without them holding it together I'll try painting them out from top to bottom christ why does this look so bad and take so long ugh etc.
I have much less of that problem now, and I seriously did nothing to consciously resolve it, it's just slowly melting away as I study fundamentals.
Cool, thanks! It very much so seems like an issue that practice will get rid of and I'm already doing theory so it should work out fine
yah if you study properly it will go away, guaranteed
that's the brilliant thing about art, if you go about learning in the right ways it's a totally sure thing. don't need any talent or anything, just work ethic

yuck
you're so gross maloof
I feel like the perspective issue could be fixed by bringing that front bollock in closer to the camera and making it bigger, as well as reworking the angles of the truck. Really it's supposed to look like an extreme perspective shot with the top of the tower stretching away from us (so in actuality the tower would have straight sides), but it doesn't look like that in the image. Thoughts?
[editline]29th December 2014[/editline]
guys im trying to make serious art here omg
yeah I didn't get that it was meant to be three point at all, the recession is far too extreme it just looks like a conical structure. the angle of the body of the truck (basically a cube perpendicular to the ground) is giving us perspective information that is completely at odds with the tower working in the way you want it to. for this kind of thing you'd wanna do a little bit of layout at the beginning to make sure everything is being seen from the same point and so on.
Been a while since i posted anything but since getting a new tablet for xmas I veered away from 3ds animation and banged this out, that and too much damn MGR.

It has potential but the rendering/lightning could use some work, everything is way too soft (which gives that bad digital look) and some areas it simply seems wrong, like the breasts and face. If you have such a strong back light, I wouldn't expect much to be lighted except some strong highlights on the overall shape.

the pose feels a little symmetrical and stiff. the interesting parts of the composition seem to be the tech stuff to the left and right of her, not the figure itself.
really quick doodle. the topic given for this one was "Guardian of the fruit tree"

maybe i should take time to refine some of my paintings.
I feel like your guardian one doesn't really express that he is guarding it. It does place the tree at a level of high significance, but apart from establishing a vague relationship between man and tree there's not much else there
I didn't even get that the "tree" was significant at all, I thought that he just thought of throwing in a random shrub at the last minute for giggles until I read what the prompt was. It definitely doesn't come across as guarding the tiny plant in the ground
