Is that Nicholas Rush in the background of the second one?
2nd one lacks appropriate amount of expression on all characters IMO.
I see what you mean, I didn't really know what I was doing with that one until the last 10 minutes or so when I added in the background. I also have the main guy facing the wrong way.

Cool stuff and nice cross hatching. I have tried to cross hatch, but can never get it to look good, I think your's is damn neat.

It's worse, soft gradients don't go very well with your pixel art, IMO. It looks like you painted over with standard low opacity, low sharpness brush in Photoshop. Green one was nice on the eyes while this burns them. The only thing that was off about the first thing is that everything is on the horizon line. Maybe that was intentional, but not every experiment in art is a success :)
edit: what I meant about the horizon line:

I quite like his vertical split along the horizon line at the moment - retains some of the inherent flatness of chunky pixel art
I quite like the gradients too; the same with his use of texture to make the pixels themselves a bit more interesting
I find perspective studies very confusing. Is 1 point perspective just when your eye level is at the horizon or can anything be 1 point perspective. If i were to take a picture just pointing the camera outside and take the picture would that be 1 point perspective (and will that point be in the middle of the picture at the horizon line?). Where does the 2nd point go? Is it any 1 point on the horizon line? I've never done actual studies with more in depth perspectives or anything like that. How does 2 point perspective come into play?
Only horizon level plays the role with your eye. Not the number of points on the horizon line. And if something is not leveled to the earth, it will not vanish at that line. That depends on the object. If you're looking at a cube like this:

It's what you call an 'one point perspective' because one point is visible on the canvas, while the second one is far, far, far to the left. There is third and forth line also. Because we see in slight fish-eye mode, the part of the cube above the horizon line will shorten, and the part that's below will shorten in a different direction.
Now if you put a second cube near it, but rotate it a little, it will have different points on the horizon:

Of course there also can be infinite horizon lines as-well. If I put a rock under one of the cubes, he will not be on a different inclination than the ground, and so, will vanish on a different horizon line. Perspective is the most easy thing about drawing. Just connect the dots.
Best exercise for you right now is to dig up photos of houses and towns and draw lines over them like this:

An untitled poem I wrote at an awards ceremony tonight - it's a little rough as of yet, but I like a few aspects of it.
Cold stare, lost in there -
in that deep dark void of space
behind familiar eyes. Looking
into them, in search of some faint
shine or glimmer - The dim spark
of deeply veiled nebulae, of arcing
ideas and the birth of new stars;
of dreams and fears of the dying light
seen in the dulling eyes of others.
The dimming spark of the spirit's demise -
of necromancy on the rise - those warm eyes
drowning under darkened skies, where the dead
needn't ever die - and the truth would never unfold the lie.
Warm eyes, in disguise
beneath the unforgiving glare of summer
skies. Long-held love begins to falter
like the disillusioned priest up at the
altar. Just as the fondest moments
begin to fade, cynicism and bias come
to save the day. As the support beams
begin to go, we beg the rot to eventually slow;
but time is short, so 'Seize the day!'
for every bad day spent is one left that way.
Every silent, cold night in bed together
but alone is there to stay, and will remain when
we are nothing but voices, distant on the phone.

The thing is is that everything in that picture is fuzzy, rugged. But the horizon line is a super straight and sharp line.
It's a choice rather than a mistake? I think it looks pretty, while if he did what Christ said, it would have looked like a mess.
I do agree that the soft gradient does not go well with the image though. I got a slight headache after looking at it ~1 minute.

I've been delving a fair bit into drawing, and I found this video while doing a bit of research into perspective. I thought you guys might find it a bit interesting to know about the history behind the techniques that get put into practice today.
It says the video is private. Does anyone have another link to it, or any other good videos on perspective drawing? I could really use the help.

Neat, but unless it's just a short gif, you may want to tone down the frequency of the lightning.
