I might actually buy these, wow thanks.
maloof, is that for figure drawing?
I heard about Loomis, nice link thanks.
Are the books all by order?
as in: beginners-advanced-expert etc?
i'd say figure drawing for all its worth will give you everything you need to get started and learn the rest on your own - i've never explored the other ones in any depth and i think some of them are quite focused on pencil drawing specifically
i've got colour and light and imaginative realism and they're both brilliant books but if i were to pick one i'd go with colour and light. although you can find all of its information online if you look for enough tutorials, it's very well written and very concise and its use of examples to explain ideas is better than anything i've ever found on the internet. having stuff in a physical book format is really handy anyways

how many years would you say I'd need to practice before I'd get some good results?
6 months? i dunno it really depends and "good results" is very relative. i've probably been painting for 3 years now but i didn't get the basics down properly and work hard enough so my skill level isn't the best considering this time frame. where-as maloof and others practiced much harder and focused better at the start and their quality of work has improved much much faster
i'd say if you work hard enough, you'll look back at your work after 6 months and laugh at how much better you've gotten. you'll probably start to notice improvements after the first couple of weeks though
Man, I totally love your stuff. So much character and personality in the characters you create. You ever thought about making a comic? Your style would suit one very well.
thx, appreciate it. Never thought about doing comics, I just draw for fun sometimes, it's nothing serious.

I think it would be more appropriate to ask where her organs are.
Really though, just a style thing.

I doodled this somewhat spontaneusly. I don't really know what it is. I guess it's a pirate?
And on that note, can somebody link me to that large compendium of links to web pages and such to help improve as an artist? It was a gigantic list of links, and I lost the link to the post.

I was bored last night, so I doodled impossibear. I'm thinking of doing a cross between Catbug and Walter from The Big Lebowski.

I disapprove entirely of the theme, but I actually really like the drawing on the right, has nice weight

I think you should either be doing pixel art on a smaller scale or experimenting with alternate means of rendering
how many years would you say I'd need to practice before I'd get some good results?
Once you get on track you'll improve in leaps and bounds, since you have everything still to learn you can only get better. However at the very start everything you do will be complete shit, as you're probably experiencing currently. Basically you just have to persevere, keep drawing even if the results are bad and you will push through and hit the ground running.
Also going in the right direction from the beginning is really important, like chesty said. I'm in a similar boat, started in the wrong place doing the wrong stuff and I'm still having to learn the fundamentals retroactively now, making my overall progress really disappointing for the timeframe.
Just keep coming in here and post what you do, and you'll very likely do well. I'd probably still be complete rubbish if I hadn't started posting here.
e.g I have a friend who's been drawing a lot from a very young age, but because he goes about it the wrong way by referencing anime instead of realism and getting stuck in ruts and so on, I overtook him very quickly once I started to draw relatively recently.

A doodle I made (probably in 5 minutes). Not really worth posting but doing so anyway to have an excuse to ask:
Do you guys know of any good tutorials for Anatomy or Drawing and all that? I'm doing pretty "decent" but if I'm going to improve a whole lot I'll probably need some guides.
Yep absolutely if you'll look back a page or two you'll find a few recommended links by Maloof and Chesty

But holy shit this took me a lot of time, still have a ways to go.
It was supposed to be Raven but I guess it doesn't look much like her.
I'm very confused by what you've done with her nose :v:
how many years would you say I'd need to practice before I'd get some good results?
I think the way to look at it is like a staircase shrouded in fog.
You can maybe see the step you want to get to, so you work and work and climb up, and you get to that step and it feels great. But then you look up and you see that while the step you're on is a step you can be proud of, there's a higher step that completely dwarfs the step you're on now. So you climb and climb and reach this step, look up again and see another step that you'd like to climb to.
Even the concept artists who are working on big budget, amazingly designed feature films are still climbing. You never stop, unless you're dead.

I tried to to some stylized thing but then it didn't work out and I didn't know how to fix it.
I started really practicing about two week ago, I can't really draw faces and hands, at all.
[editline]12th May 2013[/editline]
How should I go about 'fixing' it?
