scribbles
I think you should try using coloured strokes when doing these doodles. It'd look pretty cool.
I hate to respond negatively to criticism but you're wrong here. If you think this http://i.imgur.com/nRdtARE.png drawing matches the "adult female" closer than it matches something inbetween the "6 years" and "12 years" I don't really know what to say to you, you're simply wrong. If you could give me any more detailed criticism on the facial features than "they're adult" I'd keep that in mind but as it is right now I can't really work off of anything you've said. In other news, here's a frame from the actual cartoon [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/nR1nk73.png[/thumb] The actual character art is months old here so that's why it's a bit off, it's just for that one shot though and it's from a distance so I think it'll be fine
No reason to hate disagreeing with people. It looks like a breastless woman, there are no facial features telling us that it's a child, the glasses are square and cover the whole face and the eye is represented with a circle. Straight lines, rough edges and such is not feminine, it's masculine, it makes her seem older. Young girls are maximum feminine, you need more elegant shapes and forms to express that it is a girl, not a boy, not a grown up. The nose and mouth is absolutely nothing, they have no uniqueness to them at all and do not specify a gender, as such the hair, curve of the head and glasses are the only thing on the whole face we've got to judge from. The hair seems to insist on being spiky and detailed, despite it being long silky hair that should just fall straight down, spikes are masculine, make them smooth curves instead. Focus on making the hair as feminine as possible, elegant slopes, clean forms, no messy curly spiky stuff. This again gives a more grown up look (adults fix and shape their hair, little girls just generally grow out their hair and let it fall right down) and is more masculine that it necessarily should be. The head curve is giant and round, and the head is oversized to the 11th degree, needs more curves. This is my take on that feedback, I feel it at least brought her down to a teenager, could still be mistaken for a adult though: [t]http://i.imgur.com/HguKakr.png[/t][t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3655193/Eric95Child.jpg[/t] I'm starting to think that the artstyle in itself is so over simplistic that it could be a big hinderance here, so my main advice would be to be sure to make her proportionally correct to a child, because that's the biggest dominating feature that we can visually judge from right away. The one you made here is 4 heads tall, that's proportional to a infant, but the head is so large that it makes her look like a midget woman.

I find she does look a bit masculine, but in a way that gives her some character. I can tell it is a girl, but one who has more masculine personality not a girly girl more of a bookish or adventurous girl. And to be honest your drawing looks older, along with completely changing the characters first impression. I like the brighter colours though, duller colours tend to not look great on simplified characters usually.

The major push on feminity is to take it away from hints of maturity and aging. She's supposed to be 12, she can't not be feminine if she even wanted to, there ain't no wrinkles, no muscles, her voice can't hit low, she's only able to act though and it will just make her look cute in the end. Feminity is a huge deal if you're drawing children and they're not supposed to be raised up with violence, drugs and war and decided to go down the route of no mercy. I find mine to look older and younger at the same time.

Drawing and painting today for the first time in a week and a half. Bloody essays getting in the way of proper work It feels like a lifetime ago
words
Well first of all the "it doesn't look like a breastless woman" was referring to the body shape, not facial features. Adult women have curvy bodies and hips, she doesn't because she is a child and has the body shape of a child. Secondly, the reason her head is oversized is that she is a cartoon character and cartoon characters generally have bigger heads, and personally I think realistic proportions usually look boring, at least with a style like this. The style is simple because it's meant for animation, so I need to be able to draw the character quickly and consistently. I don't know why you keep pushing the femininity so much, she isn't supposed to be the girliest girl ever. She's a bit rough and adventurous, the entire cartoon takes place during an involuntary hike through the woods on the way to buy milk. The colors are a bit dull, I agree with that. But there's a reason, and that's because I take these into after effects and color correct the characters according to the environment later on. That way I can boost the saturation later if necessary, like I did with the campfire seen above. I feel like working with duller colors gives me more flexibility in post, and it makes it more pleasant to work with for long periods of time (it's easier on the eyes when I do cleanup in Flash).

You can't just make her head bigger "because cartoons do that", you need to make her head proportionally bigger to the rest of the body. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3655193/Anatomical-Exaggeration.jpg[/t] You don't need realistic proportions, you need the proportions of a child, whether you exaggerate them or not is up to you, but they need to be present. Of course the style is simple for animation, I'm saying that is a hurdle you need to overcome with other things, those other things is the overall proportions of the character that needs to be more like a little girl because that's one of the only things we have to judge from, both in gender and age. When you strip away factors you need to make sure that the factors that are still present get even clearer. Art in general is all about exaggeration and making things clear to the viewer, you need to find out what clearly indicates "small girl at age 12" and make those features as clear as possible. It doesn't matter if she isn't supposed to be that girly, you still need to present to the viewer, that YES, SHE IS A GIRL, and YES, SHE IS YOUNG. Young girls are more feminine, they have less features found in adults. What features do adults have? Well I've already pointed those out. Masculinity adds on age, femininity detracts age, the more feminine a person looks, the younger he/she looks. Young girls and boys are incredibly feminine and there is no going around that. I'm not talking about making her some goddamn princess wearing a dress with long golden hair, I'm just telling you she has way too many masculine features at the moment that just makes her look older and more boyish.
even more words and exaggeration examples
I'm sorry but I disagree with all of your points. I've seen all of those reference images before and I did base what I did partly on what I learned from them. I did exaggerate the body to match the head, I just said "because she's a cartoon character" to simplify things because I don't have all of the time in the world ever to explain why I've chosen not to use completely realistic proportions. I don't care if she looks boyish, that's intentional, and although she may be mistaken for somebody slightly older than she is I feel like your redesign still looks much more boring and generic. I might try out some other solutions for the age problem but the route that you went doesn't feel like the right one. The rectangular glasses are a major part of the character design, and the girl in your drawing looks much older than mine. And how is simplifying for animation a "hurdle i need to overcome"? It's something I purposely do for efficiency, not because I have to. What you want me to do obviously doesn't match what I have in mind for the character at all, so I don't feel like there's any reason to continue this.

Just re-read the Hand section in Andrew Loomis book. I feel enlightened :v: Loomis you magnificent bastard.
Just re-read the Hand section in Andrew Loomis book. I feel enlightened :v: Loomis you magnificent bastard.
Loomis books are fucking awesome, on a separate note has anyone sketched out a piece and then come to render it only to become completely frustrated and unable to start it? I'm kind of in that situation myself at the moment and its driving me nuts. I think i'll shelf it and work on something else for a bit.
