why? even if it doesn't affect you you should still be angry about it. this is terrible for consumers

sorry to barge in on this whole adobe discussion

quick one before i go to bed, i'll finish it some other day. Night scenes are tricky, I've only ever done daylight and i want to work out of my comfort zone. After this i'll probably work on sunset/sunrise... until then anyone have any tips about doing nighttime environments?
I've never done night time stuff to be honest.
It seems that full moons are your friend, because they give you some license to brighten it up heaps. Artificial lighting casting out over objects could go a long way too. That water is gonna give you some fun opportunities to play with reflections and glittery specular shading
subscription based software should not exist and it's unacceptable when they gross so much and are now roughly doubling the cost for their products. all it is is greed and hurts the independent artist and small business
Your acting like independent artists and small businesses were ever their market? Never have been never will be, hence their expensive software to begin with.
What's the full story here; are they shifting everything to monthly subscriptions and completely abandoning the regular 'one payment, one permanent license' model they've been using previously?
CS6 will be staying around as single buy, after this they will be putting up whatever new thing and rather than having new versions it will be subscription and updates mostly (since really their new versions were more like updates anyway most of the time)

That's pretty cool! It has a cozy warm atmosphere and I like it, but the original piece has a lot of nice contrast between the warm foreground, nearest mountains and the rest of the background (aka faraway mountains, lake, waterfalls ets.). And since it's a study, it's pretty surprising that you simply ignored lots of cyans and magentas in your reference.
Still really nice. I'm kinda envious.

depends what reference he was looking at vs the one you were looking at; I've seen photographs of masters' paintings that looks wildly different from one another
haven't been able to work on this much thanks to finals, but with those out of the way I should be able to get some progress done before my shitty work ethic takes over

Hair style looks a lot more refined and well designed, rendering is pretty slick. I like it!
Your acting like independent artists and small businesses were ever their market? Never have been never will be, hence their expensive software to begin with.
their market is extremely diverse and include everyone from hobbyists to the biggest businesses. just because the smaller consumers aren't their huge moneymaker doesn't mean it they're justified in their actions. IMO they're treating people like shit by doing this. they're basically saying "oh you who have bought our products for years? too bad, you can only rent our stuff now and if you don't want to rent you can fuck right off." its just socially irresponsible and there's just no good reason to change how they sell their products.
I do not understand how some of you guys think subscription models are acceptable for software. this is like being forced to rent a hammer because the hammer company decided they didn't want you to own one anymore. if u think it is acceptable then give some reasons
eric if you have an opinion you're free to join the discussion :)

It's very nice, but the sharp helmet sitting under the painterly chalky hair looks rather off, like they were done by two artists

My half assed attempt at the Origami F-15, paper was too thick most likely.
What art programs would you guys recommend? I'm looking to get into a different one, preferably free, although I know the best ones will probably cost me money, so they'll be noted. Anything besides Gimp.
ive recently been using paint tool sai and i have to say the brushes feel sleek as fuck to draw with, much more fluid to me than photoshop
I used to use Sai but the features you have for brushes in Photoshop (textures, scattering, etc) are either really fiddly or non-existent, so I prefer PS
yeah definitely. the main thing is that it feels much cleaner and visceral for linework in sai. id prolly stick to photoshop for anything else but if you want to have a lot of clean flowy lines sai is amazing

yamaha r6? but i dunno what year. fairly recent
Could anyone sum up what are these?
1. Air-brushing (Saw ChestyMcGee's paintings classified as air-brush)
2. Fine-art, and how is it different from traditional-art?
3. Master studies.
Also, recently I've been reading a comic about martial arts, the comic is fucking awesome, great facial expressions, fully colored and for a few panels and there will be fully painted panels like these:

1. it's an art style which makes everything look smooth, a painting is called airbrushed if the person looks unnatural smooth and weird. if you mean the actually thing of using an airbrush then it can look pretty awesome (see: giger)
2. fine art is stuff that would go in a gallery, usually oils and work like the masters
3. photostudies of master works
masters being good painters

I don't know, the colour scheme and visor set me off, but the arrow insignia got me. Could be a complete coincidence though.

rly? i must have put it in the wrong category on devart or something. airbrushing is painting with one of these
[t]http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/attachments/tutorials-how-tos/27214938d1300074689-airbrushing-basics-airbrush_gun_for_nails_art_68bt.jpg[/t]
it sprays paint through the air onto the canvas, usually giving very soft-looking work (although if you work on a giant canvas you can avoid this). the equivalent in photoshop is to set a brush to "airbrush mode" which makes the paint apply to the canvas over time: ie. you press and hold down your pen (or click and hold down the mouse) and the opacity and diameter of the paint will gradually increase
i dont do that i just paint with pen pressure
