It's well over a week ago since I've done this one.

making spacecraft designs

doing some value practice to get back into drawing again... after tearing my wacom pen in half accidentally before I even started (yes, it has survived after being jammed back together... totally fine except the one side-button that I never even use somehow).

Yo guys, if I was to get into designing logos and other sweet stuff like that, where would I start?

I'd suggest working on making iconic logos with readable profiles. Don't get super fancy and overdetailed, make something that you can recognize in black and white. Logo design is best if people can play "Who's that Pokémon?" with it. look around at famous companies and see what they did, figure out why. How does the shape correlate to the product or name? Is it a letter, an object, an action?
project:
make yourself a fake company to design some branding around for practice, or find a real one that you think could benefit from an upgrade. Does it have a name that dictates a theme? (Google Earth blatantly leads to the logo being Earth related, for example)
The task is never just to design one and stick with it. scribble out a bunch of rough ideas on paper (let's say 8) that all look pretty different from each other, then look at all of your options together. Decide which of them stick out the most. Now make two or three variations of those designs, you might come up with some new tweaks you wouldn't have thought of before.
now show these to someone else (or us), and have them pick out their favorites. Explain the project, the company it's for, and ask them what they would change on the logo they picked. (They'll give you a direction for the logo you probably don't like. They are now playing the part of an average client. Bonus points, you could also have them be the person to suggest the fake company so they feel more inclined to have the logo to their own preferences). Tweak it up to their specifications and give it back to them for approval. Rinse, repeat, but charge them a dollar for every extra time you have to go back and change it again.
here's a logo/avatar set I made for a guy on youtube

They're kind of iffy, I can't really think of them as real "logos" due to the way they're made and will be used, I guess they're more large avatars than anything
the gaming logo is of the new xbox one controller, if anyone wants the raw PSD of the controller silhouette I made, tell me and I'll post it
question:
how do you guys draw faces?
do you start by shaping the head and move into details
or
details first and then head shape?
I alternate sometimes, but I've had more success shaping the head beforehand.

I don't draw faces often or well, bit head shape for sure. Head shape and proportions

always head shape first. never details
when drawing, focusing on the details that the human eye tends to focus on - body parts that offer social cues (the eyes, then the mouth, then the nose etc) - usually leads to really inaccurate drawings with very odd head shapes. it's much better to understand the skull and then the muscles that make up a face because then the details will fall into place

worked into this too much really but i've had fun with it. not sure i can be bothered finishing it though
Stayed up until 4.30am trying to get this done, thought I'd at least get a couple of hours sleep and work on it more this morning before presentation. It's 8.30 now; not long to go!
Rough perspective drawings of the two designs I'm going to present. Went with very similar bases (minor differences) and differentiated the two primarily through non-silhouette visual style which is defined by the surface shapes, etc.
Gotta work on them some more, refine each individual style, do a draw-over to make it clean and tidy, add some basic values and maybe some colour, compose nicely on the page and then submit!
[editline]29th May 2013[/editline]
I terms of scale I shrunk the engines down a heap and I'm thinking I'll shrink the 'head' of the second design down too, to emphasise the bulk of the ship
i think what would be cool is if you still had some flapp-y things, you could probably rationalize them as stellar sails
[editline]29th May 2013[/editline]
not to mention all the wear and tear - meteor craters, methane ice, etc
mfw I try to do anatomy from memory after half a year of no studies.
Holy shit I dropped fast and hard.
I just gave up.

Symmetry is tough :v:
Quite new to drawing. I drew my hand. About 45 minutes work.
Reasonably happy with this.

my noob mistakes -
- hand kept moving, fucked up perspective on thumb entirely
- sun moved a lot while I was drawing, made shading more complex than it needed to be

You're not shading right.
Rule of thumb, (heh) your outlines should be as dark as your shadows. These dark areas should be large enough so that you're shading areas of the plane, rather than thick lines.
How does one learn to paint using photoshop? Is there a place that demonstrates proper techniques and how to get started? I have photoshop cs6 and a wacom tablet.
