Also doing some artwork for a friends game hes doing, would love criticism over the design of it all since I haven't done much pixel art before.

(upper left giant area is where the game screen is, bottom is message log, right area is menu, hotbar, stats, etc. Layout suggestions accepted too)
also a grass area tileset, walls, two flowers, and items.

wtf you using gradients in pixel art. Looks really bad.
The gui/hud thing looks 402.1x times better than the tileset. A bit small tho?
You can use gradients in pixel art fine? Its a pixelated gradient, but only thing looking at is if those edges are supposed to line up to be an edging of sorts, it has spots at the edge that arnt covered and are going to really obvious linesif repeated. But i'm really just not sure what it is for at the moment, that info would help. You should try assembling the tileset into a fake mini map to give a good look of what it will actually appear out as

it was something about how are you finding AAU's student community, are the people cool there, do the classes push the students to get a lot better or is it more of a self-directed kind of thing. stuff like that.
my god I just came back from a week of drawing in a small town in italy, ill post something later

Oh.
The student community is pretty good. I'm a shut-in, antisocial, introvert, borderline-austismal person mainly studying in my room/dorm's study room/library, but I've still managed to get into a studygroup with some really hardworking and cool peeps.
On a greater scale, there are some really fucking stupid people here at this school though, due to how there are no entry requirements.
I had a guy in my intermediate figure drawing class who kept reading Adventure Time webcomics on his smartphone through 70% of the class.
There were people in my dorm partying every weekend.
One out of two furries (yikes!) in my perspective class hummed throughout the whole class.
Some morbidly obese girl was just munching foods all the time so she fell behind on work.
All of these suckers will hopefully drop out though- and that makes me warm and fuzzy inside.
I believe 80% drop out. It's crazy. It's easy to get in, but hard to get through, as one of my teachers said. The remaining 20% get really good though. I was at the school's annual exhibit of the best student work (in which i had a piece in c:), and boy was it packed with industry-standard work.
As for the teachers, I've had some good ones, some bad ones, and some amazing ones.
My figure drawing teacher last semester was so good, as a teacher and artist. He brought art books to class to inspire us, and took time after class to help out me and other students with techniques we struggled with.
My perspective teacher (whom thought Massive Black's Jason Chan, among other) too put aside time after class to critique my work. And at his perspective workshops, which are from 3-6pm on saturdays, he stays hours overdue helping out students.
In addition to workshops, the school offers tutoring as well, all for free (well theres still tuition but ye)
There's so much at disposal that there's really no reason not to make it through and turn out awesome. The people that drop out are merely lazy unwilling slackers, lacking any real drive.

uh oh, that's a lot of text for an art thread.
here's my intermediate figure drawing final.

It's a lot of hard work though. In one period I was getting no more than 5 hours of sleep each night. Boy, sleep deprivation + being around all the morons mentioned above... i kept wishing death on someone almost every moment of the day.

"come on, you sub-human jewfro son of a bitch. get hit by a car. get hit by a car. come on."
Very nice. Face has a lot of personality and realistic integrity despite the sharp/slightly stylised lines you've given it, looks great. My only thing is the lower foot makes the floor appear to be on a bizarre angle
Also your school sounds so much better than mine ugh
I agree; the first two years of my art schooling was learning all the basics, but we did very little actual directed learning of perspective, lighting, etc. It seems to be primarily a fine-art school, so a lot of what we learned was how to think about ideas rather than specific principles of painting or drawing.
And now for the last two years it's primarily self directed, so we just make and research whatever we want. To be honest I would have much preferred to go and sit down in a lesson and be taught drawing and painting in the traditional way

It's awful
I am confused, it asks "Why are we fighting" and the answers are "yes" and "no"
I do not know what that means

Now I want to know what grade you get on this final project
Working on this a little bit at a time when I take breaks from writing this essay
I feel like the bigger building in the foreground just to the left of the big blue-lit focal building is breaking the composition. Think I should shrink it a bit, give it some lines to lead into the primary focal point (that blue building), etc. Y/n?

Well the blue thing is pretty generic and uninteresting and low-contrast; right now either of those two closer structures are your focal point due to their detail and sharpness (and you're better of that way I think)
Your comp would be nice if it weren't quite so symmetrical. I don't think the left structure is inherently an issue.

that lighting is beautiful.
kevlar jens can you draw me a gallery of bums? can your final school project be a series of bums?
i would really appreciate this, as a huge fan of bums.
I've been making plushies of the characters of a Homestuck fan adventure my friends and I have been making over the past year. Both projects are going very slowly.

I've always done artwork like this for scrolling backgrounds in games. I'd like to do some more of this in a sort of original gameboy style
