1: What I mean by "Do not draw in strands" is basically don't draw long lines down the entire hair surface to represent hair. Drawing hair in planes makes for an easier approach when shading. Also estheticly it looks better, imo. You might want to read this. http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.no/2008/04/hair-string-mop.html 2: It's just a method for making your drawings look more 3-dimensional, and a simplification which might make addding light to the object more easy. The original drawing was looking rather flat I think, by deviding it up in simple planes I think I managed to give it some more depth. Thinking in planes has certainly helped me over the last weeks, don't know if this applies to others. I don't mean to make this an ultimatum, in which you have to draw this way. There are tons of methods on how to construct the head, or you could just paint without thinking that much about it. I just think, in the long run, it pays off to think in planes, especially when you're a beginner. 3: Even though I don't know how to do something doesn't mean I don't have knowledge about it. Kind of like movie critics don't always know how to make awesome movies, still they know what should make a good story and what looks good and not.
There are good ways to construct heads; using blocky planes is a good one! But I agree with Cake Fingers that your paintover is quite innacurate - it doesn't block out the face in a way that supports or simplifies the underlying anatomy at all. It looks wrong. A blocked out face should still look convincingly like a face. I'd get Loomis' book 'Drawing the Head and Hands' (or similarly titled) and check out the way he blocks out faces. There's no way you can simplify the jaw and chin with the forms you've used to simplify them
unless you're doing a really boring 100% realism super hi-res portrait, there really is a problem with this
It's a problem if you draw out every hair strand but he hadn't, he simply had a bit of hair strand detail.

the porn nudes rehab continues, http://i.imgur.com/5s2EQnE.jpg I think i should just link this one, although its nothing outrageous. Kinda liked how the hatching came out, never did anything that fine. but theres some weird anatomy spots, should have seen them before starting
You won't see nothing new, the paper is very small as it is. But If you really want it I can do another picture next time I put up new work.
oh, if the image would just be the same size then it dosnt matter, I really like what your doing though :) good work.
key frames + sack toss animation
I little more anticipation before the actual toss and then a follow through of the throw could really enhance the action.
hey menter remember when i used to paint things for you cos you couldn't paint wow those days are long gone
hahaha if it wasn't for you i wouldn't be doing digital painting nowadays though so i owe u a lot dude.

that's fucking good. I really like that. square brush?
that's fucking good. I really like that. square brush?
yes! mostly, at least. i used some texture brushes to detail the top of the tower but it's pretty hard to notice.
First real attempt at making something at least semi-realistic entirely with Illustrator. Obviously not done. Pain in the ass, but I'm learning a lot of techniques with the program.

Bring up some metal stuff IRL or in the pictures and try to draw them exactly as they are for practice.

Wow, it's so pleasant to look at. I'm envious.
Your problem that everything looks too glossy. Bring up some metal stuff IRL or in the pictures and try to draw them exactly as they are for practice.
Honestly, the picture I'm working from looks more glossy than what I've done. But that's because it's the type of car image you would see on those billboard or magazine ads. Also, again, this is 100% vector and even the best vector artists' attempts at photorealism can't help but be overly glossy. If I was just drawing it in Photoshop or something this would be A LOT easier.
nudes drawing rehab I guess, Im really liking this vertical only rendering
Keep in mind, outlining your shading flattens the image.

The glossy look is just a matter of what colours and tones you're using, it has nothing to do with Illustrator and it's gradient or mesh tools. It's not hard to find photo-realistic Illustrator renditions.
Keep in mind, outlining your shading flattens the image.
Mastering or getting good at positive/negative drawing is pretty fucking hard.
Guys, where do you find reference for simple studies? I always hit the problem of not knowing what to draw and would really like a way to get random pictures
