I decided to re-work the last thing I did. I originally had a table full of weapons below him, but I just didn't like it at all.

So could you kinda sum up your process of rendering? Because the biggest thing I've struggled with is what order to go about doing things, and how to tackle them. Like how do you go from blocking things out, to details, when do you start handling the lighting, etc.
this thread is so good, i think this is inspiring me to getting back to learning how to draw on photoshop with my tablet
and pixel art god i love pixel art

Well, I do this in a pretty easy way: I just block the basic colours and then I partly erase the sketch and start messing with the basic forms and shapes. At this point I often change the light sources or pallete, so I don't usually render all these small details like folds on cloth or gear and keep the painting very loose until the lighting and colours are clear for me.
But honestly, I do my paintings in a pretty messy way, and sometimes I almost completely redraw them or massively change the colours. Sometimes I just do something accidently and then think like "wow, that looks cool!". I know that systematic approach to the painting is way better and allows you to reach better results, but I'm not a professional, so I can't plan my piece for the start to the very end.

From an old post a couple of pages ago.
So I sent my sketchbook to be evaluated. I made a couple more drawings like these, and I guess they gave me a really bad grade for it, because I dont think they understood what its supposed to be. They said "Use less lines, simpler forms", which is advice people give to the ones that are starting, except I only got here because I can draw people in a few lines too.
And how bad was my grade anyway? I had the same as some dude who never drew in his life. His drawings had problems in proportions and all that, while mine didnt really have all that many. I just dont understand it.
Ill post some other pictures later.

Well those drawings are very symbolically done and not very good at all to honest, so it doesn't seem surprising that you got a bad grade. You can't always argue that people didn't get what you were trying to convey~ with your style choice, that's just a crutch really; the first one could possibly be argued upon because of the composition of many faces and the colours. If it was a one-off you could say the messy simplistic style was an artistic choice because X, Y Z. But the second one...nah
And obviously if your whole sketchbook is of a similar standard then none of it is arguable really

Well, it doesn't look like anything else than amateurish scribbles, so I think it's justified? It doesn't give off the impression of being intentionally scribbly and wonky nor can I see a message that is strenghtened by the stylistic choice.
Not exactly a new Masaaki Yuasa going on there.

Well yeah the second one isnt all that good but it was the only one I posted previously that wouldnt get away with the colors and everything. The rest of my sketchbook isn't all with that kind of line, I mainly had to draw more stuff like this

which I showed to my professor every so often and he would always say it was good. So of course it seems weird that Id get a bad grade. But yeah, Ill go talk to him in a while, see if I can get something better

Maybe if you had used a ruler they would have liked that more.
But the way I see it is that you go to schools in art to learn, not to get good grades. Every graphic design project I do I learn a lot from, I never end up with anything too good and I only get C's more or less, but I've learned so much through every project.
Nobody is going to look at your art and judge it by the grades it's gotten from some teachers. Art will be judged as art, not as a test.
Sorry to post again so soon, just thought you'd appreciate a progress shot (I've personallly always enjoyed WIPs):

Couldnt use a ruler as I drew that on the street, and I am also pretty much against rulers when it comes to drawing. But youre right, I did learn a lot about architecture even though my grades werent that good. But the thing is, if you saw the drawings other people did, then you'd find it unfair as well.
And as to the scribbles, I think the difference between just having amateur scribbles and having some scribbles that actually are good is the ability to show volume, shapes and correctly proportionated figures when it comes to the human body. Of course the drawings I showed dont really show that, but Ill post something later
Couldnt use a ruler as I drew that on the street, and I am also pretty much against rulers when it comes to drawing.
Ok, so that's one excuse and a dumb rule all in one single sentence.
There is no reason you couldn't draw it later and there is no reason you couldn't have a ruler with you. You're limiting your approach to art with your own vision on what is and what isn't appropriate to use.
I mean, it's ok to say "I don't want to use a ruler for this piece because I want more organic and handmade lines" but to say "I don't want to use a ruler because it goes against my vision of how proper drawings are made" is just a silly little restriction in your head you should throw away, you're limiting your approach to art thus also limiting your creative possibilities and results.
You can throw limits on a set piece, but you should never throw limits on art itself.
But youre right, I did learn a lot about architecture even though my grades werent that good.
And that's all that matters really.
But the thing is, if you saw the drawings other people did, then you'd find it unfair as well.
Getting jealous at others and thinking highly of ourselves? Not really good, you should work on caring less about others and more about yourself and your work. Also comes in part with the whole grade thing, just because they get better grades doesn't mean they are better. Art is subjective and grades from teachers will undeniably be dictated by their own vision of what is right and wrong. You can simply get good grades by figuring teachers out and working hard on appealing to their tastes, given that the teacher isn't smart enough to understand brown-nosing that is. As much as they (should) strive for objectional feedback on student work and look for technical competance alongside creativity they will still always be persuaded indirectly and directly by their own taste and their own vision of right and wrong.

Well, your drawings didn't show that so... yeah? It looks amateurish, the feedback is appropriate for that. You're saying you got to "this level" by learning how not to spam a lot of lines and yet you admit you didn't actually succeed in using the lines appropriately to accomplish your goal. You failed at your own task and you admit it yourself, how is the teachers in the wrong then?

Any tips from the pro?

If it's mostly that stuff then I'm pretty confused as to why you gave those other doodles as the examples
Here's the worst thing I've done, why would anyone say it was bad!

99% of anti's pieces heavily involve futuristic military gear so it's not surprising he'd be good at it :v:

Using that box technique for faces isn't working well for you, he looks way to square, you need to look into another technique. Also, you need to start using a more gentle gradient between shades, the whole face is p.much 2 shades and it looks quite flat. Keep going though, because the proportions are nice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be offensive, I just really think I'm not good at all.
As for your question, I just look though helltones of the pictures with soldiers and all this millitary stuff of deviantart (mostely concept art, of course). I can throw in some really inspirational guys if you want.
