Just got a bamboo tablet and want to learn how to draw. I made this while I was testing it really baked last night.

Does anyone know of any good resources to learn how to draw? I have trouble imagining the silhouettes and proportions of anything realistically proportioned.
Part of a photo study I'm doing of the Iwo Jima landings, ill finish tomorrow and post it.

The shading, drawing and design are good but I feel like it's missing that ragdoll texture.
It looks like they are made out of soft plastic instead of fabric.
here's another

Yeah you're right. I wonder if there's any way of achieving the impression of fabric while still retaining the cartoon style? Any ideas anyone?

There's only hard lighting in your pieces, fabric tends to have more softer lighting. But going to softer lighting might lose that cartoony feel you want to keep.

I always kind of believed you don't need an art degree to get in the business. Most companies in the industry only care about your portfolio, and if that shows you have the necessary skills you'll get hired.
Noah Bradley is an awesome guy though, definitely an inspiration.
I'm actually in the process of working out what I can do this year given that I want a career in illustration, having just got a philosophy degree (gj robin, twat). Waiting for a reply from a course leader of an illustration MA asking if it's even worth me applying given that I haven't been formally trained in like 3 years. Any other ideas what I could be doing with my time? My parents seem to be willing to support me as long as I'm definitely making progress with the whole career thing to the point they're willing to finance a masters, but if that idea falls through I'm not sure what else to consider.

you definitely don't. my parents dont seem to quite grasp this. i'm getting 1sts in some of my university modules and barely passing others because i'm just doing a tonne of extra-curricular activity and only focusing on what i want to progress in so i'm not going to come out with the best grade. i've told my folks that i'm never even going to tell anyone i have a degree and they just don't get it
i've never been on an artist's portfolio website that says "i have a masters in x from y". it just doesn't happen. no one gives a shit
There is a little advantage of art schools though. It is the fact that they give you a knowledge from hands to hands. I mean, there will always be a guy who can point on your mistakes, tell you what to you need to improve etc. It saves a lot of time imo.
But their prices are totally hilarious. How can I afford to pay about 3000 per month if I get about 3000 per month? :)

Imho, the only 'real' benefit you get from art schools is that they provide you a structure to learn in, you have a place to go to for developing your artistic skills. It's hard (for most people) to have the dedication and motivation to learn on your own without someone giving you assignments and a structure to work in. But it's definitely possible, and it saves you a shit-ton of money :v:

Yeah, this is my reason I'm going to study something I can guarantee myself getting a job in, and do all my artistic stuff to the side, and hopefully do some freelancing next to my 'main' job. And who knows, someday even make a living out of it.
A degree indeed doesn't mean shit in the art industry, it's all about the skills you have, whether you got those skills self taught or from school, all that matters is that you have them.
the biggest benefit in art schools or university of any sort is the connections. hands down. i've earned a few hundred pounds this year doing some freelance work that i only got because of tutors knowing people who knew some people who knew some people who wanted work done. i didnt get that work because i'm the best or even the cheapest artist. i just knew some people
[editline]26th June 2013[/editline]
that and i now have a dedicated team of highly skilled people who i can form an indie dev company with in the next couple of years

Art schools in France are almost free (somethin like 300€)
it's really hard to get into them because of the tests but eh they're cheap as hell, and some of them even provide you with art supplies. (I'm talking about the best public art schools in France ofc)

How is 300€ cheap? Or do you mean annually?
Art schools in France are almost free (somethin like 300€)
yeh it definitely depends on what country you're studying in. obviously noah bradley was writing from the perspective of art schools in the US (wow what a scary fucking place to try and make a living in)
in the UK i wouldn't dissuade anyone from going to university for anything as long as they really want to do it because you pretty much get it all paid for you (which is why sadly we have such a ridiculous debt society but i'd rather have that than the neo-capitalist nightmare that is the united states)

In the US you need to pay everything yourself, still the country has over 15 000 billion $ debt.
