Some junk I drew.
Sorry about the last picture being rotated, I don't know how that happened when I was taking that picture and I don't know how to rotate it back.
Mate, grab yourself a decent sketchbook/easel/pile of newsprint paper/anything without lines on it and draw something that isn't eyeballed from video game art. Literally whatever you can think of, whether it be the trees outside, a representation of your greatest fears, your original characters, anything at all. Try other materials, like ink, paint, charcoal. Studying from real life would be your best bet, but what you're doing right now isn't doing anything for anybody.
... In my opinion.
But, if your saving for web use you want a PNG - Portable Network Graphic? Surely? Also, no matter the quality of the JPEG you always loose far more quality than if you use PNG. This is what I've been taught at least?
You will always lose a bit of quality with JPEGs, but file size is a consideration. With larger images (like 1000px plus) a PNG could get to a file size that takes a noticeable time to download before viewing.
I guess it's down to personal preference and whether or not you value a short upload/download time. In this day and age maybe people won't notice, but I still prefer to keep things small. The consequences are obviously not hugely important. But I mean if I have to choose between a 1mb PNG and a 100kb JPG and they look exactly the same unless you zoom in and actually look for artifacts on the JPG, I'd go with the smaller one
Is there any noticeable difference between 10 and 12?
I'm not sure, but as file size increases quite a bit beyond 10, I tend to keep it at 10
PNG is lossless. An image saved as png will be pixel perfect, however its compression is only effective on blocks of solid identical colour. This makes it excellent for web graphics (like buttons and icons) but almost as large as completely uncompressed image data for pictures that don't have many blocks of identical colour. JPG is lossy, it will make parts of the image look mottled and noisy depending on the amount of compression being used. This is especially noticeable on solid boundaries between different colours.
This is why jpg is used for photos usually (few high contrast hard edges, few blocks of identical colour) and png is used for things like repeating backgrounds and images with sharp high contrast edges such as text (because it's more effective at compressing the former and avoids the shitty effect of jpg on the latter).
For a painting I would recommend either a very high quality jpg or png. Experiment with file size / appearance.
amazing, thanks!
[editline]30th June 2013[/editline]
another note of importance; don't use the feature on many file sharing sites that resize your images for you (Imageshack and Deviantart will do this for you if you let them). All they'll do is scale it then resave as a JPG, so more often than not you're going to get some beautiful artifacts out of it.
Better to scale it to the size you want before you save as from photoshop, then just tell Imageshack or Deviantart or whatever other host you're using to show it at 'original size'
this looks like a fucking 3d render it's so amazing
I know, with the shading and everything it looks just like it was made in Sketchup. (Except the trees, of course)
dang at that point itd be far easier to do in 3d!

You inspiring son of a bitch.
Pose is weird but I love the render style, keep going!
I've been in a big ol' slump recently. I found this though; maybe it will help you too.
In 1892, Edwin Austin Abbey received a letter from a young artist traveling through England on his way across to Paris. He wanted advice from the famous illustrator. Here was Abbey's response:
"The great trouble," he wrote, "with the vast majority of our artists at home is that they cease to be students too soon. They spend a couple of years—even three or four years— in Paris, or some other place where students congregate, and, bored by the drudgery of the serious atelier and seeing certain easy-going pictures attracting a certain amount of attention and having also a certain amount of merit, they throw over the opportunity (which, mind you, never comes again) to make themselves as perfect as they may be with the aid of all the facilities a far-seeing body of eminent artists have, during many years, accumulated for their benefit, and dash into paint with a confidence bred entirely of ignorance and intolerance of the training that they, at that ill-informed and blind period of their lives, do not see the need of."
Abbey continued: "Go to the Louvre constantly (on Sunday mornings you will have the place to yourself, or nearly so). Look at the designs and drawings by the great masters and reflect that they thought it necessary to take all that pains before they began their painting, and that they did not rely upon genius or talent to carry them through. Remember that you are pretty blind at present. I don't remember ever before having seen an art student of your age absolutely without a sketch-book. You should be sketching always, always. Draw anything. Draw the dishes on the table while you are waiting for your breakfast. Draw the people in the station while you are waiting for your train. Look at everything. It is all part of your world. You are going to be one of a profession to which everything on this earth means something. Keep every faculty you have been blessed with wide awake. The older you get the more full your life will be getting."
I hate you lord m and kevlar jens. And I know the reason I hate you is because I'm way too lazy to ever study and practice to get to that level.

Really nice rendering, but the shape/pose of the character seems awkward and off balance a tiny bit. I also think some contrast in the values would help it pop out much more.
Thanks! Can you please specify what exactly is weird in the pose? Because I personally feel kinda comfortable to stand this way.
Thanks! Can you please specify what exactly is weird in the pose? Because I personally feel kinda comfortable to stand this way.
I think the pose was a bit nit picky. I suppose you could easily stand like that but I think what was throwing me off was the differing leg lengths. Could just be me but his left leg looks a little short.

This is my first time ever trying to shade something properly, and I'm currently carp at art, so feedback would be nice.

it could do with some bounced light and i wouldn't worry so much about making everything so smooth at this stage

The shadow makes it looks like it's on a sloped surface and it could do with a brighter highlight on the point getting hit directly by the light.
Use harder edge brushes.
And increase your value range.

Don't have a tablet atm so I'll have to draw with pencil & paper, feels so different.
Also I don't have a scanner so take these shitty photos.
