I hate how people misuse 'nuking the fridge' and use it the same way as 'jumping the shark'. They mean two completely different things.
"That belongs in a museum" "So do you, throw him over the side!" Last Crusade #1 in my books.
I absolutely love the Indiana Jones series as a whole. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull only got dumb in the last 25 minutes or so. Up until then it was a perfectly fine action-adventure film. Also, regarding Indiana Jones V - http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/indiana-jones-will-get-lost-in-the-bermuda-triangle.php
I think many people didn't like Crystal Skull because many didn't quite understand what Spielberg and Lucas were trying to do . . . which is give us a throwback Post Modern Indy. See, Crystal Skull is all about Indy being out of his element . . . it's a new world, a modern world, and Atomic world. It parallels nicely with an aged Indy, at once a globe trotting adventurer who was in control even when he wasn't. The other parallel is the new threat of communism with the Soviets. Much of 50's & 60's Sci-Fi was a metaphor for the threat of Communism taking over and our (the US) fear of the loss of identity, freedom, and individualism came with it. This is played out by the Soviets seeking this Skull that would do exactly that by creating a measure of control over people's thoughts and minds. I liked the fridge part in Crystal Skull for the same reasons I liked the chase scene/plane brawl scene in Raiders, the plane crash/river raft scene and the mine cart scene in Temple, the Tank/Dog Fight scene in Last Crusade. They are over the top and extraordinary, the way pulp adventurer/swashbucklers were. The unforgivable scene in Crystal Skull, for me, was the rope swinging scene. I don't know, that was just dumb. It served little purpose. Why not just have Mutt not fall off. Keep him on the vehicle. It was a throw away and really didn't add anything to the scene overall. But I liked Crystal.
That's the conceptually sound part. The reason the movie sucks is because it's stupid. Stupid action, stupid effects, stupid plot, stupid writing. It could have been just the same about russians, psychics and aliens and been a fantastic movie too. But it wasn't. It's all about execution with these things. Crusade and Raiders never went beyond the confines of a reality you could believe in, which made the over the top elements ten times more exciting. That's why they were good films. Temple of Doom pushed the envelope and became sortof stupid. And Crystal Skull just threw away any pretense that anything going on was real, so why should I care the least about Indy if apparently he's just fine being nuked to hell for the sake of excitement? Obviously he's never in any real danger. Nor are the aliens anything real to care about because they are stupid fugly CGI.
