Ok I guess you are a lost cause
http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=25128420&postcount=16 I'll assume it was merely an oversight.
http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=25128420&postcount=16 I'll assume it was merely an oversight.
Difference is the possible cost and rewards are equal for both of you unlike the situation I suggested where the fact that the person is of no value to you is a really big deal in the decision making because it's a five deaths or one death deal.

my point is that the possible cost and rewards would be the same for every person within the dilemma, but it should not change the result.
What happens if you both say nothing?
What happens if you both say nothing?
Both get 2 years.
The way prisoners dilemma works is that if you both say nothing you get less than if one of you tells and one does not, but more than if you both tell
No matter what, you would be better off squealing. Think about it. Case 1: You stay quiet. If he squeals, you get 10 years, if not, you get 2. Case 2: You squeal. If he squeals, you get 5 years, if not, you get 0.
Possible outcomes Criminal 1 - Criminal 2 - total time spent in prison (by both parties) testify - don't testify - 10 years testify - testify - 10 years don't testify - testify - 10 years don't testify - don't testify - 4 years Regardless of what each criminal chooses, the other always has a 1/2 chance of testifying. Therefore by choosing not to testify, you're gambling between 2 and 10 years with equal chances. The expected outcome is 6 years. By choosing to testify, you're gambling between 0 and 5 years. The expected sentence is 2.5 years. Testifying would therefore make a lot more sense if your partner is entirely unreliable - or if you're only concerned about yourself. However if he's an intelligent person (unlikely since he got caught with drugs), he would come to the same conclusion that the mutually beneficial choice would be not testifying.
Ah game theory why are you so cool?
It may be a rehash of the prisoner's dilemma but it's better than the shit that's usually posted here. "Lol A Railway CART is about to hit 5 PEOPLE !!!! BUt if u switch track only 1 die what si better????"
Wahey, someone else likes Robert Ludlum!
Fucking hell, how is the poll so close? Do none of you have SOULS/concinces?

This would be more situational. I wouldn't be silent if I knew my partner was going to rat me out. This kind of reminds me of that game show, Friend or Foe.
do drugs in prison and get 10 years but they'd go by really fast then murder my partner in crime and go back to jail because i can't handle real life D:
If the dumb ass had illegal drugs and got me into shit I'd bloody well testify against them. Their own fault for being retarded.
Possession of drugs isn't illegal to me. Fuck the system. I'll logically kick their asses in court. I'm such a smug bastard. :smug: [editline]04:53PM[/editline] And whoever tries to argue that drugs should be illegal is a retard. Don't even bother.

Its like the one game show, cant remeber the name.
The way I see it is this: Human beings will do what is in their own best interest. Because of this you cannot assume that another person will make him or herself completely vulnerable, or in other words you can't trust a person to risk their own security for your security. Thus, the chances of the other person staying silent are very low. Following this train of thought, you will either get 5 years in prison or go free. I find it a safer bet to testify against my partner. However, if the partner happened to be a good friend of mine (which, from the prompt, you may not assume) I would definitely stay silent.
My friends and I usually work this out, if we get into any situation like this we agree not to rat the other person out. We'd both take five years. [editline]05:35PM[/editline] And, assuming the partner is your friend, it would be a dick move to condemn him to ten years with no punishment for you.
I'd ask to speak to my lawyer. [editline]06:58PM[/editline] Seriously, is that even legal
Plead the fifth. Draw.

If neither of you testify, you both get two years. 2. You cannot assume the partner is your friend.
