Meh, don't know what you lot are talking about. I trip alone almost exclusively, and no bad trips yet.

so... a trip sitter...
I never said they had to physically be there, but having a safety net is just a good idea. Even if it's just a placebo effect, one of the biggest and most important steps to tripping is your mindset going in. I've had a bad trip on shrooms (my trip sitter put on requiem for a dream, which I had never seen before) and just felt myself going to a very very dark and scary place. I pulled myself out by asking him to put on family guy instead, something stupid and light-hearted which pulled me back to a more happy reality (I didn't really want to watch anything at all to begin with, I wanted to go stare at the stars).
So trip sitters can be a negative too, like having a bad one. I've heard horror stories of people jumping off buildings because they were told they could fly by bad sitters, and one of my friend's trip sitters tried to convince him he was covered in spiders, which spiraled him into a really bad trip and he almost broke his hand (Luckily we were able to stop him before he destroyed it completely, and we kicked that other kid out. Such a douche.).
All I would say is that if it's going to help you feel safe (and it should) then get a sitter. If you really don't want one, I suggest Zeemlapje's idea of having someone on call. I would NOT suggest telling no one and doing it cowboy style, but what it really comes down to is your comfort level.
