Apologies for having to type this in English (kinda nullifies the premise of what I'm saying next) I'm traveling to Munich on Thursday and staying for a week with my family. While there, should I even try using german? I always figured "Entschuldigung Sie, konnen Sie Englisch sprechen?" would be the best way to try to open dialog in English instead of being the asinine american (Arschgeige?) simply presuming that everyone should have the COURTESY to speak AMERICAN to ME also I just want to get some practice using (and pronouncing) German correctly [editline]31st March 2014[/editline] also what are good places to eat in the Munich area, both german/european foods and something that may appeal more to 'muricans? additionally I will stick out like a sore thumb... dressing like most men in the EU dress is considered turbogay in the US and will get you mocked to death (sometimes literally). And even though I dress slightly nicer than most I might as well still be wearing an American flag everywhere I go I suppose Schönen Dank!
Well, you are going to one of the most conservative places in Germany. If you expect that people there will talk English to you, then you are fairly out of luck. Most of them do not even know how to talk English there anyway, you will be more or less greeted in German with a thick Bavarian accent. About your cloths, just wear what ever the fuck you want, seriously. The fact that you do not speak German will make you stand out like a sore thumb anyway and from my experience people in Germany dress kinda like Americans anyway.
Munich people do dress more "gayly" if you want to put it that way. But nobody really cares what you're wearing. If you need instructions in english stick to young people. Generally most restaurants are either the normal german ones, Thai/generic asian or Döner. Restaurants for german food you can go to would be either the Augustiner Keller in Kaufingerstraße, just by Karlsplatz Stachus. Or you can go to the Biergarten in the Englischen Garten, which is just by the Chinesischen Turm, which is pretty touristy and would be pretty full if the weather is good. Anything else or if you need help while youre here just ask [editline]1st April 2014[/editline] Meine freundin hat ne Bungalow in die Olydorf bekommen, war heute da beim schlüssel abholen. Es ist hammergeil
stuff stuff stuff, going to munich
Whatever diwako said, a lot of people in munich in-fact DO understand and speak english... they have a ridicilous Nazi accent but it's easy enough to find your way around if you ask them for help. There wasn't a single day me using the public transportation without hearing atleast 3 different groups talking english with heavy german accent. Always look for people dressed in business clothes if you want to know your way around, they should all speak english because they mostly work at Siemens, BMW, an insurance company or fuck knows where in an office and english is a requirement. About food... I live in munich for around 4 years now and I always try to stay away from traditional food because most "Wirtshäuser" serving german food have ridicilously high prices compared to other restaurants... japanese, greek, indian... etc. If you really want to go for some traditional "Weißwürste" or "Schnitzel", you will find them at any "Wirtshaus" but they are mostly pretty expensive. The only one I can REALLY recommend is the "Steinheil 16" just order a "rießen Schnitzel"... you won't regret it. https://plus.google.com/105906533948395081708/about?gl=de&hl=de I know a lot of good restaurants but none of them serves traditional german food. Here is some other stuff that might help you not getting punched in the mouth. If you are using the U- or S-Bahn... always wait for people to get out of the train first and THEN get in, otherwise they will push you out of the way and insult you. If you are using escalators, always keep the left side free for people rushing to the trains, a lot of people get really pissed if someone is blocking the whole escalator. I see a lot of tourists causing a lot of trouble by not obeying those orders. Oh yeah, some smaller U- and S-Bahn stations close after a specific time don't wander off too long after 3am, if you are stuck in one place and the stations are closed, you gotta pay for a cab.
Meine Posts werden mit Kartons gewürdigt. Ich bin zu kantig. edit: Wenigstens scheint die Sonne noch.
Oh almost forgot, this is an insider tip. If you want a cafe with the one of the best views in Munich for the whole city you have to go to the Vorhoelzer Forum. Its right in the 5th floor on the TUM. Knock 3 times on the door when youre there and ask for Herr Alfred Schmidt. The guard will then take you to a reserved elevator and you'll be there. but https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=DX11UMVaxQE#t=287

FP fucked my post over right before I hit submit. and I lost most of what I had typed. to diwako Figured as such. Doesn't matter much to me. My parents let me choose where we wanted to go for a trip, and I wanted to go to Hamburg but I know they wanted to see historical things so I chose Munich as it has more castles and such nearby as far as I can tell. to D3TBS I don't think of it as "gay", but a fair portion of the douche canoe dwelling fratbro-wannabes around here do. I wouldn't mind dressing as such in the slightest, been wearing jeans, polos, and shirt+sweatshirt combos for 18 years now. Are there good options for Indian food? May not be as common as a good curry in the UK but its even harder to find good indian in the US. to DMGaina Thanks! Thing about the U- and S-Bahn seems apparent since this won't be our first rodeo with public transport. Escalators may have caught me, its right in the US and UK so we may have caught on late. This won't be our first rodeo in Europe. I lived near Cambridgeshire for 2 years as a young lad and we traveled to most of the nearby countries multiple times... except Germany. And I figure all of y'all can't be as hard to deal with in the linguistic department as Parisians. danke für alles, Ich kann ein wenig Deutsch sprechen, aber nicht so gut.
For indian there are a few ones around town although I only ate in one. Its called Indian Mango just off the Isartor S-Bahn. I was only there once but the food was nice and the nan bread was really good. I remember a friend of mine talking about one called Sitar I think but Ive never been there. Near that restaurant is a mexican Taqueria which is pretty chill. If its hot and you go there, I do recommend the Aguas Frescas, the horchata specifically. And a bit further in the direction of the river there's a japanese noodle restaurant. They serve Ramen and all. Whats interesting is that they kept the restaurant simple and japanese looking, instead of a lot of kawaii or traditional shit gimmicks. On the other hand the place isn't really owned by japanese people either. If you're looking for burgers Hans & Gluck are well known and there's one on the Isartor too. My friends say they're amazing although I haven't tasted myself. But if they're full most of the time and you have to reserve seats beforehand, I don't doubt it. For drinking there's a lot of bars and clubs. For bars there's the Café Cosmos north of HBF. Pretty chill for the younger crowd. If you're into Cocktails like I am, the Martini Club near Sandstraße Tram has pretty nice cocktails. And if you go Monday or tuesdays you get them pretty cheap too, along with good burgers and pizza. All these restaurants (except Hans & Gluck maybe) are pretty affordable at Munich prices, which are a tad higher than average.

Already quite looking forward to the trip and if the rest of Germany is even nearly as friendly as you guys are my time will be positively splendid. And if its splendid enough it is very likely I will participate in my Universities Aerospace Engineering exchange program :v:
