jump in front of a train

Japanese trains.
I'm going to Japan for 7 days in September. I'll be staying it Kyoto but purchased a JP Rail Pass so I can pretty much travel anywhere. Any recommendations on what to see/do?

If you go to Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji/Rokuon-ji (golden tempel) and the Kiyomizu-dera temple I was there this summer and the Kiyomizu-dera temple was currently being renovated. So I didn't see all of it but it was still amazing. [editline]21st December 2012[/editline] Also you see all over Kyoto from the big temple.
Posted this in the japanese thread. It's what I did in kyoto when I was there last year. Also you should go to Tokyo for 2 days if you bought a JR Rail Pass. You can't use it for buses in Kyoto. Go to Nara for a 1 day trip. It takes around 1 hour to go there. It's full of parks and temples. There are also deer all over the place.
I lived in Japan for 6 years. I don't remember much, but I recommend going to Minato Mirai if you're planning to visit Yokohama.

"If you are a loser in your own country, you're a loser everywhere." [editline]24th June 2013[/editline] Remember the legal drinking age is 20, so if you're an American, this will be nothing New, but if you're an Australian like me, it'll be weird. Unless it's a really popular night club, they normally won't card you. Most liquor stores will assume or will be too scared of losing face to id you. Especially since you're 6 foot tall and white, i haven't been to Japan though, but i know this applies in SEA countries.
I'm going there next year, monitoring this thread.

[editline]24th June 2013[/editline] really fucking miss japan right now.
just watch joe goes to japan and do all that stuff
Boring towns in Japan are pretty boring and I suggest you avoid the boring ones if you don't plan on being bored. Eat curry. Hiro is neat.
Go to the Bandai museum and check out the toku exhibits, especially the Sentai And Kamen Rider stuff.
order a dominos pizza
I'll be in Japan from August to April so if you want to hang out PM me. I can help you get around, assuming you don't know any Japanese.
Hit up a Book-Off, raid the video game department for super fucking cheap japanese classics and bring them home to sell.
ITT: No one has ever been to japan.
I've been living in Japan for the past year and a half and this is what I reccomend...you're going to be in the Kansai area so I reccomend visiting the nice cultural assets in Kyoto for a day kinkakuji, ryoanji, gingakuji, the geisha district, or eigamura (movie village, it's really tacky and camp but it's a theme park with actors dressed as Ronin walking around an old Japanese themed city). Visit Osaka and go to dotonbori (lots of food and shopping). Go to Nara which is the ancient capital of Japan, lots of neat cultural assets and you can play with deer. Then go to Hyogo and visit Himeji castle (google it), it might be a little less than impressive when you go since they're doing repairs to the castle but it's still Japan's most famous castle and definitely something not to be missed.
Sakura blossoms. Except.. that time of year would be no good for that, eh? Shame :(
Went japan earlier in the year, staying on osaka and then tokyo, but we travelled to Kyoto a couple of times because its only an hour on the train from osaka. In Kyoto, definately go to the Fushimi Inari shrine, its really famous, not sure how busy it gets because we went at night. Its a 4 hour walk up a mountain if you go all the way to the top but there are thousands of vermillion arches along the way. Theres the Yasaka-jinja shrine too, which is alot easier to reach, loads of food vendors at the entrance, large grounds to wander around, and a nice peaceful place Take a day trip to Osaka too and go up the Umeda Sky building. its got a 170~ meter high open top panoramic viewing platform, we went up there and watched the sunset and all the lights come on. you can see so much! Then theres Osaka Kyukan Aquarium which has a HUGE central tank with whale sharks, and loads of other cool stuff, definately a must visit place! Osaka castle was pretty cool too, though i was there in the midst of cherry blossom season so it was crazy, and very warm so the climb up the main keep nearly killed me. You should probably head to Kobe too, get some delicious beef, go on a boat tour of the harbour, climb the tower And if at all possible, go to Tokyo. that place is crazy and it weould take me a day to write all the cool stuff to do there, but a quick list would be Tokyo Tower (climb the stairs!) Ueno Zoo (pandas!) Roppongi district (Crazy nights out) Akihabara districy (arcades, anime stuff, maid cafes) Not sure where one is in Kyoto, but try and find a CocoIchi Banya curry house. i lived off their curries whilst there. nicest food ever. Failing that, go a Familymart and get some of their ready cooked chicken :D Cat Cafes. Arcades! Yodobashi camera (stupidly cheap electronics) And please dont be like my friends where, when you go the toilet. press the button that sprays your bum. its wonderful. Go to the trainstation and find out if the trains are as punctual as they say, after that go on the train and get molested. Two flies in one swat.
Go to the trainstation and find out if the trains are as punctual as they say, after that go on the train and get molested. Two flies in one swat.
trains are pretty spot on, first time i saw the underground map i cried a little but within a day or 2 it was incredibly easy to get around. Shinkansen wasnt much trouble either, got a train from osaka umeda to shin osaka, get on the train there (even though theres a bajillion platforms) and boom, 2 hours later im in tokyo. As for getting molested, i never really experienced busy trains until tokyo, shibuya line was pretty busy all day, and early morning and evening you would get squeezed on but none of my female friends said anytinh about getting groped except for when we went clubbing.
goto a japanese bar with lots women pick up a japanese chick,i heard it should be easy. country side! smoke some japanese weed
As someone who is stationed here in Japan on Camp Zama for about a year now try to make time to go to a restaurant where you can cook your own beef the meat is to die for. Only down side is it may be a tad pricey about $30 for one person but it's usually all you can eat.
if you are in japan you will probably see a lot of japanese people they're pretty great
Really? Also, check out the madu tyte duriftu
Get some delicious as fuck Kobe beef.
ITT: No one has ever been to japan.
speak for yourself buddy.
goto a japanese bar with lots women pick up a japanese chick,i heard it should be easy. country side! smoke some japanese weed
I know this post might be a joke but for good information, drugs are HIGHLY illegal in japan.
ITT: No one has ever been to japan.
Have been there. I were only one week in Tokyo and I can say that didn't see enough Tokyo at all in such small amount of time. Thinking that I go back there when I go the money or go to exchange. But I would recommend the national museum lots of cool stuff there.
Go to Odaiba and check out Sega Joypolis.
Make sure you know where you're going and how to get there. It's not a very tourist friendly place in terms of langauage. We struggled a lot if we got lost because most of the people there dont speak even limited English. Though they will try to do everything they can to help you find your way even with the langauage barrier. They pull out there phone gps and try to point and gesture on the map. It's almost heartwarming how much they were willing to help even when they couldn't speak the language. Funny enough the person who speak the best English apart from the tour guides we had sometimes was a schoolgirl who came up to us and asked if we were lost. Also I'd suggest you find out in advanced where you may want to eat. Some of the restaurants we when to weren't the best since we didn't know which restaurants seemed good or not. So I'd suggest you look up any restaurants for particular foods you want to eat so you can ge the best out of it. That's just from what I experienced. Oh yeah it's really fucking expensive there.
