I did not know that, I learned something today
FYI: its called a record [editline]11th December 2013[/editline] calling a record a vinyl is like calling a wooden chair a wood or calling a bottle a plastic it makes no sense
So much for this being a kind thread :P I picked this up for 1 dollar today :) I'm excited, plays like a champ too :)
I got two records today and I rather like both of them miss modular EP by stereolab and hatfield and the north's eponymous title album to top it off i bought a record player, its a pro ject essential
Apparently my parents are planning on buying me a turntable and stuff for Christmas, but I don't really know where to start. They haven't done so well this year, so I was just going to ask for a Crosley portable all-in-one type deal, but my mom insists I can get something good (mind, after I said it could be upwards of $400) Anyone care to help me out? I've looked around and I realize I need a turntable, a pre-amp, and some speakers, but aside from that I don't know what to get. I've heard good things about Audio Technica tables, and the Gemini TT1000 to start out, but other than that I know very little about hardware. I've been listening to music on my laptop with a cheap Logitech system and my Sennheiser headphones for close to 4 years, so this is an exciting change.
wtf dont get a crosley wtf [editline]14th December 2013[/editline] you cant really go wrong with anything audiotechnica though, the gemini TT1000 is also decent but keep in mind it doesnt have a dust cover (v. important to me)
if you want to get properly into record collecting and turntables, wait till you earn enough.. I collect a lot but I still don't have anywhere near the setup I'd like in the future. Deffo getting me a Pro-Ject Debut or better.. If you're just starting out just get a bog standard 70s/80s pioneer or technics, you really don't need too high end when you start right off. Also make sure the cartridge isn't crap..
Well, looks like I'll be getting a Stanton T52B, Alesis M1 520 speakers, possibly a preamp for volume control (since it's unclear whether or not the speakers have it) , and the necessary converter cable for RCA to TRS. [editline]14th December 2013[/editline] Actually, I'm in need of some help. I'd like this TT connected to this preamp connected to these speakers The problem is, the TT and the preamp are both RCA, and the speakers have only have TRS or XLR inputs. There doesn't seem to be a single place anywhere that has a RCA to dual-TRS, and the RCA to XLR adapter would only connect to single speaker. Any advice? [editline]14th December 2013[/editline] I found this which may seem to work, but I dunno. This is why I've never liked electronics. The only problem I had trying to build a PC was finding the right cables. The simplest part of the hardware ends up being the hardest thing to figure out.

Got them hooked to a cheapo Gemini mixer, into some even more cheap powered PA speakers. The speakers don't sound bad at a decent volume, I've never maxed them on the turntables. But last year when we had a house party playing off a laptop we were maxing and they shook the whole house. I only got them because they were £50 and wondered what they would sound like. I was pleasantly surprised. I want my brothers Onkyo amp and nice floorstanders, they're just sitting in my mums loft not being used.
Out of curiosity what setup are you running?
I have about 4 turntables to fiddle with :v: couple okayish ones from the 80s (philips), a newer Goodmans/Pioneer with an Audio Technica cartridge Thing is.. they're all belt-driven and I really would like a direct-drive one to use in general then I can invest in a proper belt drive. Using a bulky phillips stereo phono amp with some hench bookshelf speakers that have served me well. [editline]15th December 2013[/editline] also them ikea expedit shelves are so great, got two of those and a malm desk in the middle. Just perfect for me atm
Had a real nightmare scenario today. My mom bumped into a shelf and all my records plummeted down to the floor (1,5-2 meters approx). I shat my pants desperately picking them up and checking them one by one if they were ok. Only some visual damages on some of the paper sleeves carrying the records themselves luckily. So today I learned to move my records to a safer place.
Here's something I received recently, a signed copy of the new Protest the Hero album, Volition. It's the version with the alternate artwork for people who contributed to the crowdfunding thing. I backed it in like February then totally forgot about it :V Pretty nice album, though.
I'm getting my turntable and speakers tomorrow. Despite ordering it a week before everything else, I didn't get my record. Looks like I won't get to try it on Christmas after all, unfortunately.
Brother got me Back in Black for christmas Good way to start off my AC/DC collection!
Oh man, the speakers sound great. Gonna go buy some records tomorrow with my Christmas money.
yo i wouldnt place your speakers like that though, you want to not place them to close to your turntable. preferably not on the same surface either. vibrations from your speakers could cause your records to skip if youre playing at louder volumes or listening to something thats more beat-heavy
Well, there's not really anywhere else I can put them in my room. I guess I'll have to try to figure something out. The cables I got with the speakers are pretty short too, so that's another limiting factor or else I'd just hang them in the corners of my room.
If you got some insulating foam underneath the speakers it would help, or some books in the short term
I put some books under them, I'll try to get something better long term. These speakers were around $200, and seem very, very light on the bass. The subs are built in, but I'd still expect it to be less tinny than it is. Also limited edition Sean Nelson white record, and I got a personal note to go with it! What a coincidence, I just recently picked up Chicago VI. So, I don't have a carbon fiber brush or anything fancy yet, is it bad for my records if I clean them by running an eyeglass cloth over them while running it around the turntable?
Although you will get rid of some dust you will lodge some of it deeper into the grooves. Just invest in a decent carbon fiber brush as soon as you can.
January 1st 2014, who will make Vinyl Thread 2014? Normally I wouldn't care, but I got fair bit for xmas, gonna hold them off till first page
noone will make a 2014 thread as long as this one is still up
Anybody own Syd Barrett's solo albums? I have both but some of the starting tracks have problems (skips, etc). Most of the tracks are fine but I was wondering if I should look for a better copy or settle for what I have. I don't know how hard they are to find in good condition.
I recently replaced a record player that my grandparents had from the 50's, it was huge and filled too much space in my room so I put it back in the attic, to replace it for the meantime my girlfriend got me one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00F2PSQWW/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1GQ72GNZ7TJJ8KD6EV4M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294 It's cheap and serves its purpose, but of course with the price being low, I noticed some distortion on records, like the turntable was slowing down slightly for a few seconds. Whilst it's not unbearable, I'm looking to save up for a decent player in the future, anything you guys recommend? I'm new at all this stuff so I hope you guys can give me a hand in picking out the best player in regards to quality and price?
