(I hope this doesn't count as necromancy...) So I just bought a U-Turn Orbit. It's apparently a pretty solidly-rated turntable, and the newer ones don't have the issues that the first batch did. It's apparently indistinguishable from the Debut Carbon for half the price. Anyway, I want to see how deep this rabbit hole goes, so where am I going from here? I'm not really talking logistics here, since I know I need (at least) a preamp, an amp, speakers, and cables to string it all together, but I'm talking more to the records themselves. What are some good new records, and what should I consider when I'm buying vintage? Also, should I take any special considerations to the environment around the turntable? Should I get a special cabinet, etc? I know the how and why of how it all works, but I'm not sure about the particulars.

When it comes to buying vintage/second hand stuff, check the record surface for scratches and other obvious marks, and take a close look at the spindle hole in the middle. You should be able to see some marks around it form people trying to place it on the turntable if it's been played a lot. If those are absent, you can be almost gauranteed that it has been barely played, if not at all. Also, do your turntable a favor and pass on records you really want in bad shape. It will fuck up your needle in the long run. [editline]14th December 2014[/editline] Also protip for anyone trying to buy a fresh new needle; get a Nagaoka MP-110. They're ~100 euros and they outplay a needles worth thrice as much.
Spent the last few days rebuilding and restoring a Garrard 40B turntable. Bought it used and broken in very sorry shape, covered in dirt and grime, not moving mechanically and all seized up, with a thrashed cartridge and a shattered plastic plinth with wood-grain stickers peeling off. Very complicated mechanicals, all disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and properly working now. Built a new plinth out of Cherry, and modified the tonearm to accept a new Audio Technica AT92b cartridge and needle. Replaced the power cord, ground line, phono connectors inside the unit. Sounds great, works perfectly. Runs totally automatic. Really impressed with the quality of the Garrard. [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/z1_zpse565b151.jpg[/t] Only thing left is painting the platter, and painting and reinstalling the head-shell cover. Possibly painting the changing arm as well. Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures but it was hideous, so bad that no one would buy it from Goodwill and it was sitting about for days before I decided to try and revive it. This is similar to how it looked only it was worse. [t]http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a412/ottobot76/020.jpg[/t]
oh wow that's a multi-LP loader. Never seen one for full size LPs.
So what upcoming represses are everyone excited for? Pretty pumped Nick Cave represses are happening, gonna snag those Melvins ones too hopefully
I was hoping to get Government Plates but they were all sold out :c
Bootleg but hey Also my copy of mista thug isolation is set to arrive monday
I found this the other day. Bought it for that sweet, sweet 50s album art. [t]http://i.imgur.com/lGBdBGg.jpg[/t] Apparently, they sound like this.
Bought myself some Christmas vinyl [t]http://i.imgur.com/dxgKSoz.png[/t]
I ordered the Hotline Miami 2 Collector's Edition set today. The first game had such good music, and I'm a sucker for novelty. [T]http://i.imgur.com/twoEmkK.jpg[/T] It's not a bad deal, either. Three 180 gram LPs, the digital soundtrack and the game itself, all in a really nicely done trifold jacket for $75 including shipping. This is apparently the entire soundtrack, and it's really good stuff if you're into the weird dark 80s electronica. I think I might cool it on the new pressings for a while, though. I still don't have a turntable and I've already spent more than I really planned to this early.
Would love that if there was a UK distributor Got my copy of mista thug isolation! Really minimal packaging, plain back aside from a hundebiss logo, two of the labels are plain, love it, will take pics if anyone wants [editline]23rd December 2014[/editline] When I say UK distributor I was referring to the Hotline soundtrack Also this arrives soon
One of my records has a hole that's too small for the spindle, wat do? I read that you should put a pen in the hole and wiggle it around for awhile, but since it's a pretty thick picture disk that doesn't seem to work. I tried using a file as well but since it's flat and the hole is round I couldn't shave off any vinyl. Since it's a picture disc and probably doesn't sound great, and I already have a digital version of it, I might just frame it instead of playing it if I can't find a solution.
I bought these today. [t]http://i.imgur.com/ouU22m3.jpg[/t] I'm wondering something, though. Are minor scuffs and slight bends par for the course with the medium, or have some of these come defective from the factory? I noticed on the Com Truise stuff that they were very slightly wavy, and there were some surface scuffs that extended across the face of the disk, although they didn't cut into the grooves at all. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth taking them back to the shop and seeing if they have any in better condition.

Can any of you recommend some good lounge music? I got a new turntable for Christmas and I wanted some relaxing stuff to chill with in my room.

Solid EP right there I've bought a few cassettes lately, mainly for use in my truck, but I want something to put in my room to listen to them on. What could I get that would connect to a regular audio jack for my speakers, or RCA?
Records I got for christmas this year.

Right now I am looking at my record collection, after not having bought anything in a long time, and thinking about what's clutter and what's true-solid gold. I've already pulled a pile of records out that I think were just bullshit hype or records I just ended up not liking that much or even records I like but I just don't think belong in my personal library. Anyone interested in perhaps buying some records?? The stuff ranges from old to new, good to eh, single to triple LP, etc, etc. I'm also going through THAT pile and giving these things a second shot, kind of a semi finals of who is the most underwhelming. Currently on the adjudicator's turn-table: Andrew Jackson Jihad - Knife Man.
I might be interested, all depends on what you're selling though!
Got this beaut the other day
Here's the list! They're all conditionally superb unless stated. Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century... (clear vinyl) Talking Heads - True Stories The Exorcist Soundtrack, kind of beat up and ringworn with a corner of the jacket seemingly having been cut off. Looks aesthetically cohesive this way, I think. Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt (blue vinyl) The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Typing Out This Dumb Name - Whenever, If Ever (white vinyl) Xasthur - Defective Epitaph King Crimson - Red, a little worn from age The Men - New Moon Neat Beats - Cosmic Surgery (great album) My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - Some Have To Dance... Some Have To Kill... single My Bloody Valentine - mbv Fuzz - Fuzz Frustrator - anther Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quartet - Sepulcher (gross purple) Dweller On The Threshold - s/t Bosnian Rainbowns - s/t Boris - Heavy Rocks (II) Boris - Absolutego+ (red vinyl, southern lord) Akron/Family - Sub Verses (white vinyl) The Anters - Undersea (very nice looking sea colored vinyl)
I would be happy to take TWIABP and mbv off your hands if the price is right
$30 for the TWIABP album cause its on special ~white vinyl~ and the mbv is taken already, sorry.
I recently picked up some old records from the goodwill and they stink like mold. I think it's actually making me dizzy. how do I clean these things? I think most of the odor is coming from the jackets and sleeves but the records are definitely stinky too
distilled water + a tiny bit of dish soap if there's dust and shit on it look up the wood glue method
Does any one know the cheapest place to get vinyls in Australia?
