That doesn't make sense. A GPA is not on a "scale" to my knowledge, apart from 1-5, what do you mean by this? You got 3.51 or 4.3? I'm having trouble understanding what you mean by "impacted". Does this mean their engineering departments have been cutting down on admissions? Not that I really plan on going into engineering, but it's a possibility.
There are scales other than the 4.0 scale. They're rare but it's usually a good thing to clarify. And impacted means the classes are full and hard to get into because the school limits the number of slots for that major. I'm looking to go to UCSD. I have a 3.55 unweighted and a 3.75 weighted. But I've got plenty of volunteer work. Swing for the fences I guess.
Yeah, as far as impacted majors, it's the most difficult in Cal engineering to get in as an undeclared engineer or EECS major. And overall it's harder to get in to the College of Engineering than Letters and Sciences.
And this is part of why I'm applying there with a CES (Computational Engineering Science) declared major instead of EECS. It'll still be impacted/difficult to get in, but based on the descriptions of each I feel more inclined to go for CES anyway. May as well take this thread as an opportunity to ask current UC students about my academic history and chances of getting in. I'm applying for Fall 2011 and my non-weighted GPA is 3.93, weighted GPA is 4.03, SAT 2030 with 760 in Math, ACT Composite 27 with 31 in Science. This year I'm taking all AP courses except for one credited (receives extra grade point) Honors class and one normal college-prep class, and in total I'm going to end up with 6 math subject courses on my high school transcript, including both AP Calculus and AP Statistics. The only B's I've received were in honors/AP courses, the rest is all A's The thing is that I don't have that many extracurriculars/volunteer work history to put on my application, let alone much related to my declared major (Computer Engineering or related across all UC's I'm applying to). My "Activities and Awards" section of my application basically has one tutoring listing, one technology-related listing, a few school-distributed awards, and the rest are music-related things. Any ideas on my chances of getting into UCB, UCSB, or UCSD for such an impacted major?
It's not too hard to get into UCSD. I got ~1800 on my SAT with ~4.15GPA. For the SAT2, I got 660 BioM, 580 Lit, 640 Math Level 2. Took 4 AP classes, took the test for one of them, and passed with only a 3. ~20 total hours of volunteer work with Key Club throughout my highschool years (lol). And they still accepted me with an undeclared major. So, you're good to go. Just get some hours in. I feel dumb reading your guys' posts.

California colleges are making it more and more difficult to be admitted each year since they're starting to let more applying students from out-of-state in than in the past, which reduces the cap on the amount of in-state students they can let in without over-packing their campus. And that's only ONE of the factors attributed to the increasing difficulty to be admitted to a UC, let alone state college with specifically impacted majors (Cal Poly SBO for any Engineering program, for example).
