Hayao had a major impact on my life. After I saw this scene in Castle in the Sky, I said I to myself I would play the trumpet. I have since learned how to play this solo. Fucking amazing.
the only movies of his I haven't seen are Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke
I watched them back to back last night, and I got to say that Mononoke far outshined Nausicaa. They're both quite good, but Nausicaa was considerably more 2-dimensional than Mononoke. The characters in Mononoke were complex and believable, their motivations more gray, whereas in Nausicaa the characters felt flat. The antagonists were hungry for war and blood, and damned be the consequences--fuck the jungle critters!
The motivations in Nausicaa were still kind of black and white, although they were definitely not quite as grey as in Princess Mononoke. Most of the characters in Nausicaa did indeed feel flatter though but I think that's more to keep your attention on Nausicaa seeing as she's pretty much the only actual important character in the storyline.
Mononoke's Lady Eboshi was relatable and essentially good-hearted. She bought the contracts of whores in order to give them a better life, she gave a home and work to lepers who were cast out by the rest of the world. The forest was hostile to her and the people of Irontown, and they felt that they no choice but to fight back in order to protect themselves and secure their livelihoods. "You are angry that we are killing forest creatures, wolf princess? I have two women down here whose husbands your wolves killed!" (paraphrase, can't find the verbatim quote)
Lady Eboshi was one of the best characters in the movie in my opinion. Even if she is the one who caused all the issues at the end of the movie. She was obviously not a bad person though, she just had a terrible idea which turned out rather terrible at first but ended rather well in the end.
Even that squat little bignosed fellow hired to kill the forest spirit wasn't out-and-out evil, he just was just jaded. He saw an opportunity rise above what he called the curse of the world, and he fought for it. "Everybody wants everything, but I might actually get it!"
Definitely not evil but he sure was a little weasel. Not the sort of person I'd be interested in being friends with in real life certainly.
The forest creatures were also much better done in Mononoke than in Nausicaa. Nausicaa's critters are undeniably good and spiritual beings, who could do no harm but out of fear and provocation. Again, it's basically just a matter of "fuck the jungle critters, war is awesome" on the part of the human antagonists. In contrast you have Mononoke's forest creatures, which were arguably just as misguided and angry as the human antagonists. The boars charged to their deaths, blind with pride and fury against forces they knew they stood no hope of defeating, in the hopes of destroying as much as possible in one final assault. Even the apes turned to eating human flesh in the hopes that it would give them the strength to fight.
That's one of the reasons I liked Nausicaa better. The creatures were not stupid in the movie but they didn't have human-like intelligence or anything. I suppose it still fits in well in Princess Mononoke but it's one of the characteristics that made me like Nausicaa better. The ohms were intelligent but throughout the movie it's implied that they're more child-like and innocent than say the wolves in Princess Mononoke.
Both movies shared the same theme, the same lesson, but Mononoke delivered it far more cleverly, and with much richer characters. Also, the action was more badass. He arrow'd some dude's arms off. I mean, come on!
The action in Princess Mononoke was definitely a lot more bad ass. But one of the points in Nausicaa is that she didn't want to fight, that there had been enough killing already. (Sorry for the really long-winded post everyone.)
Btw, if you liked Porco Rosso as much as I did, you'll probably do what I did and go out and buy this:
My only issue with Mononoke and Nausicaa is that I had kind of a hard time understanding what's at stake in all the conflicts. Like, are these ambitious armies going to take over the world? Are they going to commit genocide or something? What happens if they win? What happens if the forest spirit gets killed? What are the consequences for all these things I'm meant to interpret as impending dangers? I still really liked them (especially Mononoke) but I'm sure I would have liked them more if I'd seen them 5-10 years earlier. Nowadays the whole "war is bad, nature is good" theme just feels bland to me. It's nothing against the movies, just that my personal tastes have changed. Castle in the Sky is definitely my favorite Miyazaki movie. Also really liked Lupin III, which I only just recently learned he was involved in (both the TV show and that one movie)

Attention all Porco Rosso fan, The second is coming.
Spirited Away is probably my favourite. There's still loads more I need to see.
You haven't seen a Miyazaki masterpiece until you've seen this MOFO right here: The scenery is like a mixture of Greece and Italy (I know I've been to both places) The only beef I have with it is that there's a German soldier in it with a Japanese name, and the fact that the Japanese police force decided that their going to go help out the people of inserteuropeancountryhere. That made no sense. THIS IS ON THE INSTANT STREAMING LIST ON NETFILX!

The detective is assigned to catching Lupin too so there is that.
Weren't the Japanese police part of Interpol or something though? This is standard procedure for things like this. But having to pay to fly 50+ Japanese police officers halfway across the world to track down one fugitive? That's just silly. But then again, I'm arguing about animated movie movie logic...
Just because it is an animated movie doesn't mean the plot should make less sense.
Noted.
I loved these movies. I could watch them over, and over, and over.
Castle in the sky was fuckin awesome, hell having mark hamill as the main villian was awesome. Note: He is only in the disney dub of castle in the sky.
Ughghgh why aren't his movies available on netflix instant streaming!!!
The Lupin The III movie is
My Neighbor Totoro is an overrated piece of shit in my opinion. Nothing really happens in this movie, you only see Totoro a small part in this movie, and the main conflict [sp]of the girl running away[/sp] is solved in like 10 minutes. However all of the other movies are incredible.
I kinda felt the same, except for it being bad. it just made no sense to me why it's so highly reguarded. Maybe it's a Kids Nostalgia thing i never got to experience. It's a good movie though. i also watched ponyo and loved that. Also i got spirited away on netflix im plannin to watch right now for the first time :buddy:
I have all of Miyazaki's movies on my Netflix queue for a good reason. Spirited Away = my childhood rolled up into one amazing movie
Rewatched Spirited Away, yesterday. The ending is emotional to the point of making me sad, although I simply can't place the reason for that.
I think Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky were a bit better than Spirited Away, but that's just my opinion.
I dont usually watch anime....but when i watch anime, i watch Hayao Miyazaki. My Favorites are Nausicaa, Spirited Away, and Castle in the Sky. i also have Kiki's Delivery Service, which is also pretty good.
I like more of his newer stuff like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo (Liam Neeson, come on). I couldn't really get into Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa. Kiki's Delivery Service is also a favorite of mine. His movies are really great, even if they are a little bit confusing at times. The art definitely makes up for it. I've never seen My Neighbor Totoro since I can't find it anywhere, but I did like how they incorporated Totoro into Toy Story 3.
I've watched My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Spirited away and Howl's Moving Castle were dubbed. All were great films.
I have Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service on DVD. Next to Toy Story and The Lion King, their probably some of the best animated movies ever.
Finally checked out Ponyo, and while it was cute and fun, I didn't like it as much as the other Miyazaki movies. This one was definitely targeted more towards young kids. One thing it didn't disappoint in was that "fantastical" element that all Miyazaki films have. All Miyazaki's films are a joy to watch for that sense of wonderment that he executes so perfectly. Though I've got to say, Ponyo had the worst end-credit song I've ever heard in any movie ever, with the possible exception of Grand Torino. "Ponyo ponyo ponyo ponyo ponyo is a fishy from the deep blue sea! I love her and she loves me and she's really a little girl because of it too ponyo ponyo ponyo ponyo (robot voice) PONYO"

Miyazaki movies are nothing without Hisaishi conducting! Mononoke Hime Symphonic Suite: Live.
yeah it kind of doesn't translate and the jonas brothers remix doesn't exactly help
Wasn't jonas brothers it was just the voices of Sousuke and Ponyo, singing it.
