no that's not what I'm saying.
Refer to my other post. "indie" means independent record label. But most 'indie' rock bands are signed to major record labels
so the name is an oxymoron

Ooh okay
Well, I guess it doesn't just mean independent anymore, but a style
I have a friend who listens to indie rock and I swear most of the stuff she listens to is just one chord on an acoustic guitar and some guy from birmingham singing about "whimsical" themes.
So true, nowadays at least.
Indie Rock is just an umbrella term. It's basically the same thing as Alternative Rock. If you don't know what it should be classified as, but it remotely sounds like The Killers, Modest Mouse, or Franz Ferdinand, then it's Indie.
Indie has changed in meaning over the last few years, at least from what I've seen in the UK. I think the first band I'd consider Indie were the Libertines, followed later by bands like the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and maybe Keane and Snow Patrol - all bands who helped begin to define my taste in music to more than just 'generic pop', when I was about 13 or something. If I think of an indie band now, the first thing I think of is some pop-y guitar riffs, with the 'singer' talking lyrics about some inane topic with a mediocre drummer keeping the beat.
To be honest, indie has almost become more about what the guys are wearing than what they're playing. Brightly coloured one-tone slim-fit hoodies or pinstripe waistcoats, skinny jeans, fedoras, those shoes that look a bit like converse but aren't, sunglasses regardless of the ambient light level and a curly asymmetrical hairstyle. Sound familiar? Eg:

And by indie, I mean it as a genre, not as short for independent.
I never understood how post-punk came from the '70s when the very first punk rock albums came from the late '70s
It's just a name. Post-punk is just punk that's more experimental and blended into different genres. Compare to post-rock. Not in sound but in name.
I know what you're talking about, that same falsetto voice really gets annoying after a while.
I never understood how post-punk came from the '70s when the very first punk rock albums came from the late '70s
i dunno
joy division was like one of the first post-punk bands and their last album came out in 1980
if Universal Music Group is indie to you then yeah i guess
Before they were signed, look it up bro.
To me indie's became some sort of music that gets shoved down our throat after a decade of having to listen to. Bit like hair metal in the 80's?

I tried to argue this with people and when i mentioned that technically unsigned Hip-Hop artists are "indie" they flipped a shit.
Before they were signed, look it up bro.
their first album was on a label owned by UMG
Before they were signed, look it up bro.
All bands were indie before they were signed.
Fuck, even Slayer were indie.
you guys are a little confused
indie means an independent label meaning a label not owned by a large company
4AD has indie artists
So what are we all generally coming to here?
Bathory are an indie band
Theres nothing Indie about Indie Rock nowdays.
Indie became another marketing term in orther to sell, sell, sell... to people that think they are listening to Indie Rock
Also... People in this thread got really confused about what indie means.

I agree with you there...
I always thought of the weird alternative rock bands as "indie bands" because they were silly and no labels would take them. I'd see the Arctic Monkeys as indie rock,

or silly one chord indie rock such as the Strokes

But after reading this thread i'm probably wrong

post punk revival but still
Arctic Monkeys? The Strokes? Silly????
Yes sir, you are probably wrong. I can´t see how you could make a connection between "silly" and these guys.
They are both definitely indie rock
At least by what indie has come to mean, anyway. More of a genre of music than a term for bands which have their own label.
Indie rock has lost most of its meaning nowadays, just like 'Alternative' rock did during the 90's. I don't care though, I enjoy some artists from both genres.
You know, the things that have been argued about in this thread are pretty well explained on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_rock
It confirms that "indie rock" no longer only means independent rock, but can also be considered a term for a distinct kind of rock that most rock bands that are referred to as "indie" have.
So whether you say it means "independent artists" or a certain kind of rock that sounds like OK Go or Franz Ferdinand or whatever, you are right.
I listen to Indie music because I like it. I've been listening to this stuff most of my life, ever since this whole "hipster movement" thing started, people have been bashing it. It makes no sense.

Here's an emoticon to explain it:

well to be fair, I guess they started bashing it because it essentially became a giant oxymoron. It being not really "indie" rock anymore.
It's been like that for a while, now people are bashing it because hipster is the new emo, it's cool to bash it.

I find it strange how 'emo' sort of went from

to this wank:

I mean, classic Emos were kind of Sissy, but at the height of the 'emo' my chemical romance movement, I would have killed to have the classics back.
I suppose the only modern rock is 'indie'.
uh what
There are lots of rock bands around today which aren't indie :geno:
Yeah I know that, but it's mostly all you hear right?
