commonsensemedia.org: handy tool for idiot parents or another step in the demonization of technology
one time I played grand theft auto and now I steal cars and murder 500 people near daily
One time I played Team Fortress 2 and now I spend all day stabbing people in the back with a switchblade.
My big issue here are the Policy goals of the organization and the lack of intelligent counterpoint in the reviews. The reviews aren't very well moderated. There are the uber-religious types and anti-capitalists who say things like "The Blatant Commercialism is Disgusting, PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN!!" and complain about "dark artwork" on a Yu-Gi-Oh review.
But all the anti-commercialist sentiment is perhaps the most frightening thing about this site to a free-market capitalist such as myself (i don't want to make this thread about politics, I'm just providing a viewpoint).
And to me, if you don't want your 12 year old to go buy trading cards you can just tell the kid no. It's this magical thing called "parenting."
Fucking crazy, I know.
Whenever I see shit about over censorship, I always think of these two songs. They where written About Mary Whitehouse and Lord Longford, both of whom where very pro-censor-everything:
"Absolutely hate the show. I bought the season one serious because I needed to fill my twilight void. This show is NOTHING like the wonderful romance books in the Twilight Saga. All the women in the show are portrayed as dumb, sex objects. The acting is terrible. The so-called souther drawl they have is nothing like lousiana--i ought to know, I'm from Louisiana. The vampires are just plain evil and satanic rapists. I was totally turned off by this show and I'm getting a refund!
Fuckwads like this -__-
It's about True Blood...
[editline]16th April 2012[/editline]
And only one of the "parent" raters mentioned the books...
(Also, some of the people rating in the "parent" section admitted in the post that they were fucking 16 years old...)
This, among other things, is what I meant when I said the moderation was awful.
That's just the opinion of one reviewer. You can look at all the parts they've put together and see whether you think it suits your child. I mean it's not as if they've made anything up. They talk about aspects of games and movies and music that are there. They don't say "hey don't let your kids listen to this devil music", they say "this music has some themes that some parents may object to letting their children be exposed to, access at your discretion".
And this is another point I was going to make: won't parents who give a shit already do all that? I mean, really. The kind of parent who would use this site for a responsible purpose wouldn't need the site anyway.
I say this from experience. I wasn't allowed to watch family guy for years, and partially because my mom actually payed attention to websites like this rather than using her own discretion. YuGiOh, too. 'Cause "demons."
(She's grown up since, and my brother has a lot more freedoms than I did.)
And the parents who don't give a shit naturally wouldn't visit the site.
It just seems like another unnecessary sounding board for the social conservative, pro-censorship crowd.
Yeah, this will totally work well.
I dunno, I've been reading the reviews on the site and they seem fairly sensible...
[editline]16th April 2012[/editline]
Oh I just read the one for Immortals, that was completely fine but the review on the gun builder app is fucking ridiculous
Maybe if it was a toddler that would apply
[editline]16th April 2012[/editline]
Okay upon reading more reviews, this site isn't bad at all. I don't know why you guys think it's so backwards.
Yeah it seems like whenever a parents controls ANY aspect of a child's life, facepunch flips the fuck out about it.

Well, she's right for the most part. The accents are awfully fake, the acting is shallow, and they portray woman as sex objects like all the time. If she thinks vampires are supposed to be all romancy like Twilight though she's not gunna find much media about it, fans of vampires tend to like it when they actually act like vampires lol.
It's not that.

Those are most of my issues with it.
I personally find it incredible that they think they can protect kids from all of this shit, and just live in a happy little bubble all their life without anything bad/mean/disgusting/perverted ever happening.
They need to wake the fuck up.
Dude the site says Battle Royale is an excellent movie and if you feel like your kid is mature enough he should watch it. That's not making them live in a bubble, that's parenting.

Yeah some of the user submitted reviews are terrible, the sites content is alright though.

Yeah, I have no problem with the site's reviews. My problem with the philosophy of the site is the pro-censorship leaning.
And before anyone says it, I know they're not strictly or militantly pro-censorship, but they're too damn close.
Almost like SOPA and PIPA aren't exactly meant to infringe on internet free speech, they're anti-piracy bills. They're just too close.

To be honest I'm surprised that the parents have the lowest age ratings for the more gory, mature games.

The site really only mentions media censorship once, and they're too vague about it.

Christ, they're too lenient with some of these. I'd never let a 13 year old play Dead Space 2.

For now. But once they gain influence, I could see it getting worse.
As awful as this sounds.. I can't wait for the old generation of people to die and people who actually understand technology take over.

"We believe appropriate regulations about right time, right place, and right manner exist. They need to be upheld by our elected and appointed leaders."
Meaning they think developers should be -LEGALLY- liable for the content they provide to consumers.
Fuck those guys. Same alarmist bullshit from paranoid old fucks that we've seen a million times before. Although, curiosity is compelling me to see how they feel about Marilyn Manson albums. BRB.
Edit: No mention of Marilyn Manson, but I got a good laugh at the thought of families sitting down and having a heart to heart discussion about "LMFAO" as the entry found here recommends.
Wait since when the fuck are positive messages objectively measurable?

They're generally and widely agreeable upon in a society. Taking over a city with paramilitary force and becoming a billionare, using your money to buy a harrier jump jet to murder civilians is generally seen as a no-no, whereas saving humanity from a totalitarian alien empire is a-okay.
I'm jealous that they have so many reviews of books, since that's actually my goal for this summer. Though, I haven't read a lot of the books in their review section (I'm sorely lacking some new books to read). They seemed pretty sensible, but I've never been one for placing 'ratings' on books. I think 'children,' 'young adult,' and 'adult' is pretty much the only warning a smart, discerning kid really needs.

I'm not referring to just this site. There seems to be a new thread about a site like this about once-twice a month, to varying degrees of idiocy.
Not to mention the christian-oriented ones (which there's a new thread about) tend to be worse in the amount of "PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN FROM THESE HEATHENS THIS IS LIBERAL AGENDA THIS WILL TURN YOUR KIDS GAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" crap.
It's not all of them, but it's not uncommon, either.
It's semi-obvious that there are teens/children posing in the adult review section just to get the parents attention. "Oh, Saints Row 3 is for kids 8+ because this parent...". The silly reviews are rampant too. I'm failing to see how this is idiotic. It's just like any other review site. You take it with a grain of salt.

Its like metacritic with IGN reviewers! Do$h!
