The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) - Spidey's back in a brand spanking new movie!

Well reviews are hitting.
Telegraph said it was a super hero for the "Twilight generation" and wasn't as flashy and bubblegum as the original series but were impressed with it and enjoyed it from what I can gather. The problem with the telegraph review is it's trying to be edgy and make a statement about audiences. They gave it four stars.

A lot of the comments call him stupid. One who saw it said it's not a Twilight film at all.
Guardian was very impressed with it. The comments however refuse to see it as it's "too early" to reboot. Obviously they don't know what's happening to Batman soon.. Four stars.

Evening standard gave it two stars and called it boring. Even said it's the first 'British superhero'. Which gives me the impression they've not seen X-men or Batman.

I was specially amused by how this is the only critic to say it's skimpy on plot and character development. When others said that was the fantastic focus. I get the impression he was expecting to see a remake not a fresh adaptation. Some plot details about Norman Osbourne in this one too so watch it.
All critics say that Garfield and Stone are simply amazing, some great drama. They also claim it takes a bit too long before anything spidey happens. Apparently an hour before the suit is first seen. I don't have a problem with that. Ultimate Spiderman took 6 or 7 issues to do the origin story and Webb already said the sequel to the film will also be part of the origin story.

Also tweets of people that have seen it are massively favourable and praise Garfield.
Empire gives it 3/5:

Seems there's a bit of comparison to Avengers going on. Which is dangerous.
They should be comparing it to the other Marvel movies than the Avengers.
I personally didn't like Iron Man 2 so I think its going to be better than that.
An hour before he's even in a suit?
Man this really is a full blown origin story.
Still looking forward to it though.

Comparing a spider-man film reboot to one of the most successful, good films of the last decade seems kind of unfair, because i doubt its easy to do what the avengers did.
Comparing it to the Avengers is a bit unfair. The Avengers wouldn't have been as great if it weren't for the standalone movies before it.

The avengers was basically the combined result of 5 movies of build up and character development and origin stories, all put together in one long, good movie.

Thanks, I would never have guessed.
Saw people on the car-thief video on youtube saying Spider-Man is ruined as he's "funny" and "A smartass". It's also bad because "He sounds black".
Then somebody compared it to the Star Wars prequels and said the whole thing is ruined.
What. The. Fuck.
I read somewhere that some people are complaining there's too much focus/screen time on Gwen, and it feels like she's actually the main character.

88% so far.

I have no complaints. Emma Stone is mighty fine.

That kinda sounds like it works though. No better way to make an audience love the new Spidey than giving them the perspective of somebody that loves the new Spidey.

Well shit.

I still say despite the massive positive critical and fan reception the film won't sell too well as people are sceptical. Just like with Batman Begins.
But then they'll get it on DVD and see the sequel which will hopefully emulate the success of The Dark Knight.
It was really good guys, just saw it in 3D. It is a full origin story, he doesn't put on the suit til a good hour in. It's more true to the comics too, Venom makes an appearance as Flash so you know they're planning something with Venom in the next movie. The Lizard ( I think that's his name?) was a pretty good spidey match up. They tied him well into Spidermans origin story. Make sure you stay after the credits too. I still don't know who the villain they introduced at the end is. They made decent use of 3D, but you can definitely enjoy it without it. All in all I wasn't disappointed. There were some cool first person shots of spiderman web slinging too. Anyways, make sure you see it when it comes out in July for you stateside folks ;).

Uh, Eddie Brock is Venom. Flash wasn't Venom until very, very recently.

This may be a stupid question (Bear with me, I haven't read the whole thread)
But are there any references to the Avengers at all?
Uh, Eddie Brock is Venom. Flash wasn't Venom until very, very recently.
Hence they make Flash into Venom for a bit?
They aren't rigidly bound to one certain continuity.
Hence they make Flash into Venom for a bit?

The difference is this:
Eddie Brock=the Venom you're probably thinking of, a big evil Spider-Man with lots of teeth and a giant tongue.
Flash Thompson=a mercenary who uses the symbiote to enhance his strength, speed, stamina, and all that good stuff to excell in black ops missions. Uses firearms and looks like Spidey in the black suit, no teeth, no tongue, etc.
Hence they make Flash into Venom for a bit?

Because Flash as Eddie Brocks venom would be stupid, Flash is a huge spiderman fan why would he become his enemy?
Flash as Venom is a government agent and a Secret Avenger, when he wears the symbiote it forms into a hard chitin to act as body armour and the only resembelence to Eddie Brocks venom is the colour scheme.
There was also Mac Gargan (Scorpion) who had Eddie Brocks Venom appearance until he joined the Dark Avengers and took on the appearance on the black suit Spider-Man and called himself Spider-Man.
Theres been a few other hosts but none really worth mentioning.
We've gotta shout this every time the Lizard shows up.

Ask yourself. Why is Spider-Mans actor reading a massive bunch of Avengers comics round the same time Marvel hints a deal is being struck with Sony? Look closer.

"Thanos Avengers". Thanos. [sp]Who appears to be the plot for Avengers 2[/sp].
He COULD just be a massive fan. But not even a massive fan walks around with a bundle of comics from a series from a while back.
So I'm gonna get excited
i want to believe
Just finished watching it. The Lizard's appearance and voice slightly bothered me and I hated how his lab coat would magically reappear and fall off at multiple times in the film.
Nitpicks aside I thought it was great. I didn't expect much from the new Spidey but he pretty much surpasses the character that Tobey Maguire portrayed.
The ending was so bittersweet though, since you know what (probably) awaits Gwen in the sequel.

Also, no Avengers references btw, and Stan Lee makes one of his best cameos yet.

Any hints as to who may appear in the sequel? I actually can't wait to see this, I used to be heavily into spidey years ago but the feeling subsided until now.
Judging by his post I'm gonna say Goblin? I hope they do him better this time.
He should be as dangerous, scary and unpredictable as The Joker. Not a jumped up power ranger on rockets.
I've heard that they tease a new villain in a post-credits scene.
So here's my list!
1. [sp]Green Goblin- I hope this isn't the case. Or rather I hope he shows up in the third one instead. Seems a tad sudden to bring in this HUGE villain and kill off Gwen in the second movie. Sure, Dark Knight did it, but this WON'T be unexpected, Gwen IS going to die at some point. But it seems to make sense, what with all the Oscorp stuff and whatnot.[/sp]
2. [sp]Kraven the Hunter- Hears of how Spider-Man took down the Lizard, the most impressive beast he had ever seen. Heads to New York to hunt Spidey. Pretty straightforward, but it could still be cool.[/sp]
3. [sp]Kingpin/Big Man- Because this wouldn't be much of a list without a third slot and these two seem to make sense.[/sp]
So yeah, now that it's actually out, I'll be avoiding this thread until I actually see it.
Kingpin isn't owned by Sony so will never happen sadly. I always liked him in the Animated Series.

I just remember that flashback to his childhood...

*cue Bobby Hill*
Shit was hilarious.
Can someone spoil the Stan Lee cameo for me?
