thats not a bad thing
just means you only sponsor those you trust the most
There's barely a handful of posters that haven't been banned on FP though - unless that only applied to pbans people would inevitably get banned for someone else's mistakes
But what if someone you trust sponsors someone you don't trust, and all three get banned?
The system didn't work that way, did it really?
You can't trust anybody with your ban.
Was asking about the way it worked in the past tho'
unless that's what you said, tense's confusing
Is there any planned way to restore gold upgrades in a way or another ? It's exasperating to not be able to read what you all are talking about despite coming everyday since a few years :v:
Maybe whole fp is shit nowadays, you made the mistake of selling gold membership to all the rust kiddies and now whine when it's coming to bite you in the ass. Make gold have a year requirement, 5 years and you wade out the 12 year old anime freaks.
its not the rust kiddies that shit up the gmf
yes because it has a bad word in it we must ban it
if he gets banned for that we should re-ban all suggestive and lewd avatars that everyone kicked a shit up about ages ago
what actually happened with all that? lasted like a week or two then it went back to the usual shit
I have posted in the GMF a tiny amount of times but when people say it's only some threads that shit it up it is kinda true. Some parts can be alright sometimes.(Won't elaborate as to where for obvious reasons.)
That being said, it kinda got it's own shit reputation by being allowed to fuck around for so long and had nothing done about it. I'd actually like to see it cleaned up and be better because it could be fun to be around more often.

Grow a pair, There's a difference here with a joke from a film and actual discrimination, and I don't think you can prove the user, his avatar or the film is racist in any way as described in the actual dictionary definition and not on your little head.
Somebody call an exorcist, the ghost of Max is haunting Winner.
Dear posters,
You're wondering what I'm doing here. Put it simply, we need your help. As you know, being a gold member comes with many perks such as: The name, the avatar size, access to gold-only forums, and the responsibility of being a good poster.
Nearly everybody on FP knows that there's a gold-only forum called the GMF. You also know that it currently enjoys the reputation of basically being the armpit of FP. It has always been rancid and out on prowl to troll users around the forum, normal day for GMF. Problem was it had reached a point where this privilege had been abused, and the system failed to fix it in time.
However, thanks to a number of gold members along with some mod assistance, it was decided enough was enough and a silent but organized effort was made to push out the problem out of GMF. The effort was simple, displace the subforum with new users & have them self-moderate GMF. The attempt partly succeeded, but there are still some issues that need to be fixed.
We’d like every gold to take advantage of GMF, let’s all post there.
We’d like old GMF to become an immediate thing of the past, all 10+ years of it torn down.
We’d love to see all gold members start using GMF and make it their own. If keeping to relaxed posting + snark, that’s perfect.
Never let GMF spiral down into a loop of harassment and personal flaming again. Ever. Users who personally flame/harass and single out users as before, will be banned.
Gold forum rules will finally be taken seriously, as actual rules of the forum.
HOW ON EARTH?! IT’S A SHITHOLE!
This isn’t hard, the forum cancer was already on its way out. Around 20 users were able to topple what was left of GMF a month ago and positive changes happened almost immediately. All this was done to end dumb witch-hunt bullying, and general forum cancer. This is a plea to make Gold Member worth something. Too long has it been passed off as something not worth it, we can make it into a better place.
Come join us in the GMF, make it a subforum of your own. Make use of it.
all that happened was that a bunch of fast threaders barged in and started making terrible posts, so everyone left (90% of people had already left). then the fast threadders slowly started flaming and shitposting and becoming what they claimed to have hated and drove out
the cycle always remains

garry should just delete the gmf if he doesn't want it the way it's literally always been and will always be, new users or not
says the one that bans me for apparently using a addon that replaces your posts with buddha quotes with 0 evidence rusty :~)
^ exactly the kind of posting u wanted to purge from the gmf, congratulations
im more surprised that the GMF is such a big deal to people. like, really? its a subforum. you have an entire forum, as well as countless of other websites to visit. does the gmf really stand out that much?
Crap taskets awkward vitriolic campaign against an internet subforum because it used to be filled with people that hated him
the hard truth is that anybody could have posted in the gmf already and it was only a hostile environment if you were really stupid and terrible
From what I gather from this thread, there is a fine line between lighthearted joking at each other, and being annoying/abusive, and a lot of members have crossed that line in the past in GMF?
Why not have "Gold Probations" for when people go out of line?
I've had zero problems ever in the GMF, does that mean I'm actually an institutionalized bad poster??

No. To me that's kind of the point. It would be cool if it had a use but it doesn't. It would be cool if there was expectation of you if were gold but there isn't, and it would be cool if people actually cared to be gold but they probably don't.

its a username colour on the internet
I think the idea of a sponsor system to vote in new golds is terrible, unless your goal is to make the GMF the exact same kind of exclusive group that you're supposedly trying to get rid of. People are just going to vote for their friends, and vote against people they dislike, and soon enough the GMF will be in exactly the same boat it was in before, but with a different group of people.
Yeah people are really running away with ideas here when really the solution is that if you want to fix the GMF in there, just go in there, make some good threads, post quality stuff, and vote down anyone who is being a cunt to anybody else
like it's not exactly difficult

I get where you're coming from and I agree that it was possible to fit into the forum but your mentality doesn't really explain threads like facepunch sexy pics which was just a 100% solid circlejerk
and ultimately things like 'everyone hated this set of people' and 'it was only hostile if you were stupid and terrible' is pretty much a justification about why the section needs to change in and of itself

When I joined the concept of gold member was "this guy is really good at this forum business so we gave him a fancy title" and it showed. You could tell a gold by post. Now its a color, which is why I changed mine something different but equally as silly. I know me, I'm no gold. I'm a glorified blue. But my understanding of this whole cleanup GMF thing is that the moderation wants something more. I'm perfectly content with the avatar size, but I do acknowledge that being gold used to mean something. People are acting like they're trying to make that become a thing again, and I'm on board with it.

i have been here since 2005, this is revisionist history
if you are taking about gold members, maybe. if you are talking about the gmf, no
which has everything to do with how you get gold membership, not the content of the gmf.
and also, no matter how you decide who gets to be gold. as long as it's an elevated status over the rest of the forum, the gmf will always turn into what it's become. it's inevitable.
the gmf has been hostile to morons since its inception.
if you want a change, delete the gmf. delete it.
its been said loads of times but if you want to be part of the gmf literally nothing's stopping you, just don't be weird and awkward and nobody will lash out at you
[editline]1st July 2015[/editline]
oh rusty said it right before me
why not just delete general purpose threads and have a forum/section full of just useful perks and stuff
servers and cool downloads and DIY threads and stuff
its a username colour on the internet
The larger avatar is the important part. Other than some curiosity about what goes on in there I've never had much interest in it, at least personally. I dunno how many blues see getting in there as a motivating factor to get gold.
From the way people have been talking about the GMF and what I've been thinking, even ignoring the fact that it's apparently a rancid shithole, the fact that so few people use it mean it's doomed to remain small because it's so small people don't see a point in going in there to post because hardly anybody is in there. A circular problem. If people are actively driving new posters out then there must be hardly anybody in there. Is that right or am I off on this assumption?

This was basically true, at least up until the last 3-6 months. The forum had started to die out of its own accord, with a lot of the regulars and all-around good folk basically just leaving Facepunch, or at least posting a lot less often. Most of the people left over were the newer members who had always tried a lot harder to fit in and be sassy and whatnot, and shit got really stupid and pointlessly exclusionary for a bit. This was when the scales tipped and everything went full goofy with the pedo-hunt. Some legit creeps were banned during that, but folks got so wrapped up in that silliness that it basically turned into "let's try to ban anybody with an anime avatar!"
Not that I'm saying we shouldn't ban everybody with an anime avatar. We should just be honest about it. Ban Anime.
Wow I just changed my avatar on a whim for the first time in years. Oops.

i'm sorry sir i'm going to have to report you for being a massive weeaboo

i'm going to need your license and your dakimakura
Maybe we should be asking do we want an "elite" user group or not.
Supposing as Rusty suggests the GMF is deleted, would people who were formerly gold members feel aggrieved? Many of them paid for it, either in OG days or during boostar availability.
In my opinion "elite" status can be a useful reward and it's human nature to want a hierarchy, but I'm sure many others would disagree.
