does anyone agree with me when I say the cold war and WW2 were the catalysts for the greatest leaps in technology to date?
does anyone agree with me when I say the cold war and WW2 were the catalysts for the greatest leaps in technology to date?
I agree with this, if it wasn't for WWII, radars and non-human computers would have been even slower to come into existence. Our laptops may have been 80's size by now if WWII wouldn't have started.
We pretty much had too. If we didn't retaliate to the attack on Pearl Harbor and help Great Britain and France, what kind of messages would that send to the rest of the world?

By waiting for just the right moment to join the war, America looked great from the war.
Contributing the cause of WW2 to one thing makes you look fucking stupid.
I know, I could write down every single cause to WW2, but the Treaty of Versailles was a major cause of it.
We certainly helped but we didn't single handedly come in with jet packs and lasers and save the day with no effort.
I've been misinformed. Especially about the jetpacks. [editline]02:42AM[/editline]
Agaghghhhhhh children debating history. I don't even want to read most of the thread cause I know it will make me facepalm till death. Pretty much gonna degenerate into people arguing "NO MY COUNTRIES BETTER, NO MINE IS, HURTHHRRGGG" The US obviously provoked Japan into attacking, they wanted into the war they just needed a somewhat legitimate reason to get in. And well it worked.
Hey u need to trade with me otherwise Ima bomb ur battel shipz. Regardless of any "provocation", Japan had no right to attack us. Also, many people in this thread are misinformed about why Japan actually did attack us. It was because of the oil embarge, but they were going to continue their attacks on China and eventually, the the Duth East Indies. All the oil in the Indies would have provided Japan with enough fuel to last a long time, certainly long enough to finish their wars in China. The problem was that they needed more time to prepare the attack and since we were no longer trading oil with them, they needed to move quickly. They knew that we weren't going to stand for an invasion of the Indies, which is why they invaded the Phillipines and attacked Pearl Harbor.
we will never know for sure, but maybe we (the English) wouldn't have lost so many brave lads if we had a bit of back-up now and then :argh:
Soviet Russia won the war. End of thread.
The US obviously provoked Japan into attacking, they wanted into the war they just needed a somewhat legitimate reason to get in. And well it worked.
Don't think so. Explain how the U.S. provoked the Japanese into attacking them. Personally I think the U.S. joined in at the perfect time, just like in WW1, the US wasn't looking for a war, but was dragged into it. Regardless of other motives, the prime motivation of joining both wars, I would say, is for greater good. Also, I don't know how the war would have ended up if the U.S. hadn't joined, but it most definitely would have gone a lot differently. I think what would have happened was that Germany would not have ever been able to stem the Soviet victory. I think that after Germany failed to subdue them, that it was sort of inevitable that U.S.S.R. was to be successful in the war. The soviet goal was always to let the nazis destroy capitalism, then come in and destroy the nazis with communism. That probably what would have ended up happening. Because the U.S. entered the war, they ended up meeting at Berlin.
Simple answer, no.
Should we care now? Plus, during WW2 we were practicing isolationism. People were pissed that we went to war, after they bombed our ships.
America needs to be a really big Switzerland, just be neutral as fuck and give everyone free shit
I hate war! No one should have to die for their countries geopolitical interests and religious reasons. Stop telling soldiers they are fighting for our freedom, it is just propaganda. It is horrible what some people will put others though. I feel so bad for all these men and women who are good people but end up fighting for their lives and are forced to kill people who are (most of the time) in the same situation and are scarred for life. We should just build robot tank boats to guard the cost and shoot bad guys Thats it, stop going to war. In some cases, war is needed such as being on the offensive to protect us from terrorist organizations before it's to late, and some times, we go to help our allies and sacrifice lives for more lives, but a lot of the time, this is not the case such as the veitnam war, hippies were mad at the soldiers and they had a right to be mad, but not at the poor soldier whos life was turned upside down by the government, they should have been mad at the government.
*castration snip*
It's a job just like any other job. You signed up for it, and you got your own mouthful.
The Japanese would not be able to take Australia. Possibly New Zealand.
No. Japan had taken over Singapore and were almost on our doorstep. If we didn't win on the Kokoda Trail, we were wide open for invasion.
The US obviously provoked Japan into attacking
ahahahahaha you don't know anything about history, don't you?

Britain tried to prevent war by letting Hitler take back some of it's colonies, which was not allowed under the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler thought he could get away with more and tried to expand it's territory. Hitler tried to take over Poland and Poland asked Britain for help. The Prime Minister of Britain at the time got Hitler to promise not to invade Poland and Hitler agreed. But soon after that Hitler lied and invaded Poland. Britain had enough of Hitler and declared war (not sure on the last part) Hitler invaded the Rhineland between France and Germany under the Policy of Appeasement. Britain was in no state to go into another war.
we should have never gotten involved
It's I don't like the fact that so many people have to die to solve countries problems, we are all people, why should we ever result to killing each other. Oh shit I sound like such a hippie. I don't care what people think of me for not wanting people killing each other.
It's funny how you all portray America as the big superpower in the world. Economically yes. Military- wise no, the fact of the matter is that Russia has more advanced nuclear technology, more active & reserve nuclear warheads ready to fire within a moments notice. Every fucking war you cunts get yourself into, you expect other countries to run to your god damn rescue, i.e Vietnam, Korea, Cold War, Middle East. But when it comes to other countries asking for your support, you turn a cold shoulder and tell them to get fucked. I for one wouldn't shed one tear or think anything bad if you ignorant fucks were to get nuked in the next decade. kthx.
I don't think we will ever use a nuke again.
I don't think we will ever use a nuke again.
You will if north korea keeps going the way it's going
we should have never gotten involved
Then Australia would of been in danger from being invaded by the Japanese. [editline]08:04AM[/editline]
I don't think we will ever use a nuke again.
lol
If you want to argue saving lives, look at the atomic bombs.
Atomic Bomb is ironic because the Germans invented it. :eng101:

GunFox got it right. US Gov. serves US interests and those interests were best served by staying out as long as possible. Let others fight and die, sell off old equipment for Gold and bases, develop new tech and industrial capacity and see how the war goes. Germany beats UK (US' main economic and power rival) then goes on to fight Commie Russia to the death? Fine. UK fights off Germans, Germans end up up fighting on two flanks: join in and be seen aa saviour? Fine. I don't think there was anyway the US could have 'lost' WW2 tbh.
Too late now anyway... We won all the same.
The US sticks it's nose in things they don't have anything to do with. It has caused problems for the world many times, but they just keep on fucking with other contries buisniss Jerks...
I think they should've. If they did the war would've been over sooner with fewer casualties. They just waited for a good reason to join. And that reason was Pearl harbour at the time. They should've joined when the british declared war. But then the country would protest. Just like how Americans are in the middle east fighting now. 9/11 gave them a reason. Not many are protesting that. Noone wanted the forces to go to vietnam. People protested.
