basically the whole album of roulette dares sounds similar.

thats take the veil. You should like that
Thanks man.
I would agree. Playing some of those riffs with all of those dm5th's really work your hands. The composition is very well done i'd say. A lot of Aeolian, and Harmonic Minor with dis-chordal progressions.
Some of his shit is hard as fuck to play. Most of the time because it's as if it has no key pattern to it (some of it doesn't)
Their best album is deloused in the comatorium
My personal opinion:
1. Frances the Mute
2. Deloused in the Comatorium
3. Octahedron
4. Amputechture
5. Bedlam in Goliath
I just can't say no to Cygnus, Widow, Cassandra Gemini, L'via L'viaquez.

I used to go through stages over which I thought was best. I had a stage for each (except Octahedron). But I always went back to deloused. And everyone usually does.
I saw Octahedron on vinyl at a record store. Packaging looked quite lush
The cover art is weird as shit
The Mars Volta is my favorite band. Nice to see another fan on the forums.

I'm more of a technical person when it comes to guitar, I can play alot of TMV songs with easy since most of the time I'm playing jazz.
Death metal really got my coordination set up way back when.
Omar could be a better player, he's really sloppy, and usually when he improvises he fucks up ALOT, I've seen them live, so I'm not talking out of my ass.
If he had just played clean, with no effects at all, he would suck.
Anyway, I only play one instrument, that's the guitar.
I'm trying to master it... I have been playing for 10 years now, the riffs are no big deal for myself...

When you play Jazz Fusion as well, this is no big deal at all...
The Mars Volta is definitely one of my top favorite bands. Especially my first time tripping I listened to them, it was quite intense of an experience. TMV is just plain brilliant in every aspect.

Modulations are fun aren't they? haha
Modulations are fun aren't they? haha
Elaborate please
I saw them live a few months ago and it was fucking awesome
40 minutes of extended Cygnus glory!

Also I'm not really sure if you can say they modulate as such. They never really stick closely to any key at all (except maybe in their new album which is pretty pants) so it's more of a tonal centre than a key.
I can't wait til they come back to the east coast
I can't wait til they come back to the east coast
Seriously! I missed them last time they were here.
I'm self taught as well. I use Major and minor scales a ton. Explain to me "tritone" I saw this mentioned on his wiki. I'm not sure what it is exactly and how to implement
You know the solo for Take The Veil ? That.
Also,
Frances
Deloused
Bedlam
Amp
Octa
Imo.
Got my Telecaster and Crybaby today. Makes playing Volta so much better.
got my artcore today.
sooo that explanation of tritone didnt really explain much :\

It's a interval of 3 whole notes throughout a scale which in TMV's case creates dissonance, dissonance means out of tune or not within musical quality that most prefer/unusual melodies.
I personally think, Bedlam in Goliath is their best. Goliath is my favourite song of theirs, followed by Metatron.
I think Bedlam is their worst.
My order is(not counting their EPs):
Deloused in the Comatorium
Scabdates
Frances the Mute
Amputechture
Octahedron
Bedlam in Goliath
But like I said, I went through spells of liking one above the rest. But always went back to deloused.
I don't have a preference for albums as a whole, but my favourite song has to be Soothsayer.
Listened to frances the mute from beginning to end while high today. It was magical
Listened to frances the mute from beginning to end while high today. It was magical
Listen to it when you are tripping. That my friend is magical.
Hmm maybe. I feel like Frances has some "bad vibes" in it in some places that I wouldn't want to get into while tripping. Omar uses a lot of tricks to tweak the listener. Unresolved dissonances and stuff like that cause discord. He's commented on it before
I remember I saw a vid of the Mars Volta performing on TRL or some shit. 15 minutes of pure awesome, something that MTV doesn't deserve. Their music is too powerful and intense for it.
Also Omar is a fucking beast.

Agreed.
Didn't they also perform on the Henry Rollins show? I'm surprised TRL would put them on, and for that long.
Yeah I was surprised they performed that long too. MTV made an exception.
They are moderately mainstream now. I wouldn't be surprised if they show up on MTV shows. They've had a few singles from deloused air on their music video shows
I never ever liked De-Loused. I always loved Frances, I liked some of the tracks on Amputechture. I liked Tremulant, I really didn't like Bedlam, and I kinda never listened to Octahedron. I love most all of Omar's Solo stuff though.
How is it possible to dislike deloused? That's like loving peanut butter sandwiches with no peanut butter
